Mets 10 – Pirates 1 May 9, 2009

The Mets got another good start, this time from John Maine. This is Maine’s third good start in a row after a shaky start to the season. He went 6 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. The one run he gave up was a solo homer to opposing pitcher Paul Maholm.

There was a ton of offense for the Mets today. They had 17 hits and 1 walk. Jose Reyes was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s and his ninth stolen base of the season. Carlos Beltran was 2 for 5 with a solo homer in the fifth inning that was a bomb! It went into the second deck in left field. That’s a shot.

The game was over early when the Mets put up 5 runs in the fourth inning to make the score 6-1. So the rest of the game was kind of a snoozer. But the Mets did manage to win their sixth straight game and got a win over a team that they should beat.

Mets Jerry Manuel Suspended

Major League Baseball
Image via Wikipedia

Manger Jerry Manuel has been suspended for one game by MLB. Sandy Alomar, Sr. will manage the team today against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The suspension is the result of bumping caps with umpire Bill Welke during an argument Thursday before Manuel was thrown out of the game. If you recall, Manuel argued and obstruction call against Jose Reyes when Shane Victorino forced contact with Reyes during a run down.

This doesn’t come as a surprise. As I wrote on Thursday, a suspension was the likely result of making contact with the umpire.

What to watch:  The Mets are going for their sixth straight win this afternoon. Maholm is a tough lefty with left-handed hitters batting only .133 against him this season. Expect to see Fernando Tatis and Gary Sheffield in the lineup today. Maine has started to turn things around recently winning his last two starts.

Mets 7 – Pirates 3 May 8, 2009

Jonathan Niese did a great job in his season debut starting for Oliver Perez tonight. He got a quality start going 6 innings giving up 2 runs on  7 hits and no walks with 5 strikeouts. The bullpen came in and held the Pirates down until J.J. Putz allowed 1 run in the bottom of the ninth.

The offensive star of the game was definitely Carlos Delgado. He was 3 for 4 with 5 RBI’s and a home run.

The defense was a little questionable for the Mets tonight. Jose Reyes had an error in the game. But Carlos Beltran booted one that wasn’t an error and he and Ryan Church let one drop that they lost in the lights.

The Mets win their fifth straight game and are starting to look like the team that we expected to see at the beginning of the season.

Mets Angel Pagan Arrested In Florida

MLB: MAR 04 Spring Training - Mets at Nationalshttp://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js
Several media outlets are reporting today that Mets OF Angel Pagan was arrested in Florida yesterday after being stopped for speeding on I-95. The Florida state trooper ran a routine check of Pagan’s license and found out that it was suspended. Apparently, he has warrants out for him for unpaid traffic tickets from 2005 and failure to appear in court for those tickets.

Pagan has been in Florida rehabbing after having right elbow surgery during spring training. I know that Mets ownership hates to appear in the police blotter. But this certainly isn’t a terrible offense like Ambiorix Burgos. Although embarrasing, it certainly isn’t at the level of David Cone exposing himself in the bullpen or Mark Corey and Tony Torasco smoking pot near the stadium.

pirates-logoPittsburgh Pirates (12-16 Road: 5-9) at New York Mets (14-13 Home: 8-6)  7:10 pm

Jeff Karstens (1-1 5.85) vs. Jonathan Niese (0-0 0.00)

TV: SNY    RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Pirates come to town losing 9 of their last 10 games. They had a good start but completely lost it, not unlike the Marlins. Karstens last two starts haven’t been very good and he hasn’t won a game since April 23. Niese hasn’t been great in the minors this season but makes his season debut in place of the “injured” Oliver Perez tonight. This one has the makings of a high scoring game, even in spacious Citi Field.
