Mets Set To Extend Minaya For Three Years

There’s an 11:00am news conference scheduled by the Mets for today. Several media sources are reporting that the Mets will announce an extension to Omar Minaya’s contract that will keep him with the Mets until 2012 or beyond. I’ll be curious to see what the terms of the deal are. Minaya is finishing the fourth year of a five year contract valued at $4 million total.

In all fairness, he should be in the top five GM’s in terms of salary. He’d be higher if the Mets had won a World Series during his tenure. His compensation should be comensurate with the team’s payroll, track record of success, and size of market. He’s got two of the three, now we just need a World Series championship.

Maybe they’ll surprise us and announce a new deal for Jerry Manuel.

Fan Banned From Citi Field

A fan plead guilty to losing his mind or whatever the charges were for a melee at a Mets game on May 31st. He swatted children out of his way while badgering Mr. Met. Subsequently, he fought with Shea Stadium security guards, spit in their faces, and ended up getting banned indefinitely from entering Citi Field.

Attacking Mr. Met? I might take a swing at the Philly Phanatic, but Mr. Met?

Mets Burgos Sought By Dominican Police For Two Deaths

Police in Santo Domingo are searching for Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos in the hit and run deaths of two women. Burgos was arrested last month at a hotel near Shea Stadium for assault and harrasment in a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend. He’s accused of throwing her to the ground and she had to be treated at a local hospital.

The Mets released a statement regarding the recent charges against Burgos:

“We are extremely disturbed by the reports regarding the player’s potential involvement in the hit-and-run accident that unfortunately killed two women in the Dominican Republic,” the Mets said in a statement. “We take this matter very seriously and have begun an internal investigation to ascertain the facts. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families of the victims.”

The Mets are a really PR conscious organization and aren’t going to tolerate being dragged through the mud by Burgos. Don’t expect to see him playing for the Mets ever again.

Mets Santana Has Knee Surgery

Today Johan Santana got his knee scoped for torn cartilage. Apparently, it was the result of normal wear and tear not an injury that occurred during the season. He knew that his knee was bothering him during the last month of the season but told team trainers that he didn’t want to know how bad it was. The word is that he told the Mets training staff that the only way he wasn’t finishing out the season was if he went to the hospital in an ambulance.

The Mets picked the right guy to give a monster contract to: a great player and no excuses.
