Former Met Burgos Convicted Of Assault

Ambiorix Burgos was convicted in New York of assaulting his ex-girlfriend in a Queens motel last September. The Mets released Burgos in December. I’m not sure what took them so long. Maybe its that he was arrested in the Dominican Republic after the season for killing a woman in a hit and run accident. I believe that he’s still facing charges there.

From Yahoo Sports:

District Attorney Richard Brown’s office says Burgos threw his then-girlfriend against a wall and repeatedly punched and slapped her when she tried to leave. Prosecutors say Burgos then stepped on the woman and pummeled her as she lay on the floor.

And to think that Omar Minaya traded Brian Bannister away for this sociopath.

Mets Burgos Sought By Dominican Police For Two Deaths

Police in Santo Domingo are searching for Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos in the hit and run deaths of two women. Burgos was arrested last month at a hotel near Shea Stadium for assault and harrasment in a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend. He’s accused of throwing her to the ground and she had to be treated at a local hospital.

The Mets released a statement regarding the recent charges against Burgos:

“We are extremely disturbed by the reports regarding the player’s potential involvement in the hit-and-run accident that unfortunately killed two women in the Dominican Republic,” the Mets said in a statement. “We take this matter very seriously and have begun an internal investigation to ascertain the facts. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families of the victims.”

The Mets are a really PR conscious organization and aren’t going to tolerate being dragged through the mud by Burgos. Don’t expect to see him playing for the Mets ever again.

Mets Should Pay John Maine Now

The New York Mets should continue the recent trend in baseball by locking up their young talent with long term contracts. The Mets have already done that with Jose Reyes and David Wright. So this practice wouldn’t be out of character for the team. Other teams have started getting in on this as well. Last month the Rays signed Evan Longoria to a six year deal.

John Maine deserves a long term deal now. The benefit is avoiding a contentious arbitration hearing where the team is forced into a antagonistic role of pointing out the players faults. The Mets have done a great job of avoiding that until this season when Oliver Perez beat the Mets in arbitration to earn $6.5 million this season. Continue reading “Mets Should Pay John Maine Now”
