New York Mets (18-20) at Houston Astros (14-24) 4:05pm

R.A. Dickey (1-4 4.50) vs. J.A. Happ (2-4 5.75)

TV: WPIX   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets can win another road series with a win this afternoon behind Dickey in this battle of the pitchers that go by initials instead of names. Dickey’s pitching has been inconsistent this season and he hasn’t won a game since April 3rd. But in two starts on the road this season he’s been great with a 1.32 ERA.

Happ has been inconsistent for the Astros too. His last start in Pittsburgh was decent, a no-decision that the Astros lost. He went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks. Generally, he’s been getting hit pretty hard though, the league is hitting .285 against him.

Mets 6 – Astros 4 May 13, 2011

The Mets needed an eighth inning rally to come back from down 4-0 to beat the last place Astros. The Astros have the worst record in the National League but Bud Norris held the Mets scoreless until Jason Bay hit a solo shot to deep left field in the seventh inning. Bay’s homer was a long shot to the top of the big wall in left near the train tracks.

In the eighth inning, Fernando Martinez hit another long home run off Norris into deep right field as a pinch hitter. David Wright followed with a line drive home run into the short left field seats scoring 2 runs and giving the Mets the lead.

Dillon Gee’s line wasn’t very good pitching 5 innings and giving up 4 runs. But Ryota Igarashi relieved him in the sixth and allowed 2 inherited runners to score. Igarashi threw gas on the fire and that didn’t help Gee’s ERA. But Gee was having trouble throwing his curveball for strikes.

It was a good comeback win on the road but the Astros are a terrible team, only the Twins have a worse record in MLB.

New York Mets (17-20) at Houston Astros (14-23) 8:05pm

Dillon Gee (2-0 3.80) vs. Bud Norris (2-2 3.16)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The last place Mets square off against the last place Astros in another barn burner of a series. The Astros took two out of three from the Mets at Citi Field last month. The Astros have lost three series’ in a row. Norris has been pitching really well though. He’s only allowed 6 runs in his last five starts over 32 innings.

Gee is making his fourth start of the year. The Mets have won all three games that he started this season. And he hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in any start. It could be a decent pitching matchup even though both teams aren’t very good.

There isn’t much more to say about this game than… Carlos Beltran!!! He ripped three 2-run homers, two left handed and one right handed. It was quite a display. He has 8 home runs for the season and if he ever had trade value it’s certainly right now.

Jon Niese didn’t have a great start but pitching is tough in Colorado when you rely on a curveball. He gave up 5 runs in 6.1 innings. But he had enough run support to make it work for a win. That kind of start won’t stand up for a win very often though. He definitely owes Beltran dinner for getting that win for him.

The Mets offense was surprisingly light for scoring 9 runs. Other than Beltran, the rest of the team only had 3 hits. They did have 9 walks as a team though. Ubaldo Jimenez didn’t have it at all. He only lasted 3.2 innings and gave up 5 runs on 3 hits and 6 walks. He had no control at all.

The Mets take the series with the win today and dump the Rockies out of first place in the NL West. The Mets are on their way to Houston now to start a weekend series tomorrow night.

The Future Pridie of the Mets Bench

DENVER, CO - MAY 10: Jason Pridie #20 of the ...

When I think of offensive ineptitude, I think of the Mets bench. When I think of a career minor leaguer who can possibly serve a valuable purpose for the Mets down the road, I think of Jason Pridie. Since being called up, Pridie has turned heads by belting a few home runs in clutch spots, something that the every day players have rarely done so far this season. I think most fans can agree that the Mets are far from a playoff caliber ball club. There are gaping holes in the starting rotation and the lineup does not produce consistently enough to contend. With that said, I think that this year, seemingly more than ever, the Mets bench has left so much to be desired. Whether its Willie Harris grounding out softly with a runner in scoring position or Scott Hairston swinging out of his shoes leading off down 2 runs in the 9th, the bench players on this team have just not come through.

Bench players in baseball are some of the most under-appreciated athletes around. When called upon off the pine, they are basically thrown to the wolves and must perform with far less comfort than someone going up for their 4th at-bat of a game. In addition, they usually find themselves in crucial situations of games. It is a role in which failure requires a player to wait another night for redemption, but if a big hit is delivered, an invaluable source of energy is ignited and can carry over.

The Mets have had some very reliable pinch hitting specialists in the past. Rusty Staub was a feared pinch hitting dinosaur in the 70’s and early 80’s. In one of the most significant trades that the Mets made in the 80’s, they sent pitcher Mike Scott to the Astros for outfielder Danny Heep, who would prove to be a vital player off the bench for the team’s storied run of ’86. More recently, Matt Franco established himself as a feared bat off the bench in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. His claim to fame was in the subway series at Shea in 1999 when he laced a 2-run single with two outs in the 9th to win a game off Mariano Rivera. And of course, the all-time pinch hit leader himself, Lenny Harris, had two separate stints with the Mets and hit .302 as a bench player during the 2000 season.

Jason Pridie is a player I’d like to see succeed as a pinch hitter for the Mets in the future. Of course, I’d like to see, Hairston, Harris, and company succeed right now but in my mind they are just not good hitters and have not displayed an ideal approach in critical spots. Pridie hasn’t shown us that he can be that elusive, Matt Stairs’esque pinch hitter but I like him for his sneaky power, his eye at the plate, and the fact that he hasn’t really looked over-matched yet since he’s been called up. If a relief pitcher makes a mistake, especially over the inner half of the plate, I like Pridie’s chances of making the most of it and doing damage, all with lunch pail in hand. His potential might seem minor, but if the Mets can put together a winning formula in the near future I’d be happy to see Pridie be a part of it.

New York Mets (16-20) at Colorado Rockies (19-15) 3:10pm

Jon Niese (1-4 4.71) vs. Ubaldo Jimenez (0-2 5.88)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets have a chance to win the series this afternoon in Colorado. The weather is supposed to be bad though so it may be tough to get the game in. But they’ll try their best because the Mets aren’t going to be back in Colorado again this year.

The Rockies have lost all five games that Jimenez started this year. His last start was pretty good in San Francisco though. He went 6 innings and only allowed 1 run.

Niese has been pitching well for the past month, not allowing more than 3 runs in a game since April 19. David Wright is scheduled to have a day off today and Ike Davis probably won’t play with a strained calf in last night’s game.

The Mets finally got a win against the Rockies this season after starting 0-5. Mike Pelfrey had a second consecutive solid start and hit a 2-run double in the fourth inning that plated the winning run. He ended up going 6.2 innings and allowing 3 runs to lower his season ERA to 5.74. He still has a way to go to make that ERA respectable but he seems to be on the right track now.

The big news is that Ike Davis was injured on a collision with David Wright. They were going for a pop up in front of the mound. It looked like Davis rolled his ankle but it turns out that he strained his calf. Daniel Murphy moved over to first base and Justin Turner took over at second base.

The Mets and Rockies finish the series, weather permitting, today at 3pm.
