Phillies 3 – Mets 2, September 24, 2010 – Mets Mail It In

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets didn’t stand a chance in attempting to stop the Phillies winning streak which now stands at 11 games. At this rate the Phillies could clinch the division on Sunday with the Mets forced to watch.

Despite having R.A. Dickey on the mound, who pitched well enough for the win, the Mets generated almost no offense. Shane Victorino leads off the game with a homer and then in the 2nd, Victorino doubles to score Wilson Valdes.

Angel Pagan’s 1oth homer of the year tie’s it up at 2 in the top of the 4th. Dickey give’s the lead right back in the bottom of the inning by giving up a single to Raul Ibanez who then went to 2nd on a passed ball. Ibanez ultimately scored on a single by Carlos Ruiz making the score 3-2.

After the 4th inning the Mets mailed it in. Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran just did not show up tonight. Angel Pagan, 1-4, 1hr, 2 RBI’s and Ike Davis, 3-4, 1 run scored, were the entire offense and only bright spots of the game.

If the Mets can’t get the win tomorrow with Dillon Gee going against Kyle Kendrick, expect the Phillies to wrap up the division on Sunday when they have Cole Hammels on the mound against Mike Pelfrey.

Tickets for Monday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers can be had for as little as $1 on StubHub. Of course food, beer and parking will set you back another $40 and that’s only if you go by yourself.

What I really wanted to do next week was attend the “Bark in the Park 2010” event where you can bring your dog to the park. This is a great idea but, unfortunately, the only place you and your dog will be allowed to sit down and watch the game will be from the Pepsi Porch.

Tickets cost $32 for humans. A dog’s ticket costs $10 on top of that! I understand that the entire dog ticket and a portion of the human ticket gets donated to the North Shore Animal League but there is no way I’m spending $42 on a tickets when I can get an even better seat on field level for $1 if I leave the dog at home. I say field level because you are allowed to sit at field level on games with low attendance and these games will qualify as low attended games.

Unfortunately I won’t be taking my dog to the park that day because in this economy, I’m not spending $80 at the park when I can spend $40. Perhaps the Mets should donate a portion of all ticket sales to charity but forcing dog owners to fork over double the money for a meaningless game against the Brewers is just bad business.

“Bark in the Park 2010” should have been a promotion to get people out to the park, not as a tool to force people to upgrade to the Pepsi Porch. But that’s just me…

Marlins 5 – Mets 2, September 21, 2010 – Mets Mathematically Eliminated from the Wild Card

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIf you missed it, and most people did, the Mets lost to the Marlins last night by a score of 5-2.

Although the Mets have not been a part of this pennant race for at least 6 weeks, they were finally mathematically eliminated from the wild card very quietly in front of a crowd of maybe 500 people. Mike Pelfrey pitched another good game giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits in 7 innings but the Mets offense, which actually managed 11 hits, couldn’t generate any run support aside from 2 solo homers, 1 each by Lucas Duda and David Wright. Sloppy plays by Wright and Jose Reyes in the 7th resulted in back to back errors and the Mets went quietly in the 9th to be mathematically eliminated yet again while playing the Marlins.

It’s been almost relaxing to watch these last Met games knowing they are absolutely meaningless games, especially from here on out. It’s also comforting to know that there are finally going to be significant changes this offseason.

The changes that I have been hoping would happen last winter are now well overdue. A new GM and new manager really should have been done last winter. This winter a new GM can start entertaining trades for the clubhouse cancers http://www.honeytraveler.com/pharmacy/ Carlos Beltran and Luis Castillo, attempt to drop a few bad contracts like Oliver Perez and K-Rod and really explore options for Wright and Reyes. If we can get some value for them, great. If not, build an entirely new team around them. Preview: Braves at Mets September 19, 2010

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid the embarrassing home sweep to the Braves this afternoon behind Dickey. He’s been tremendous this season and won his last two starts only allowing 3 runs over 15 innings. Lowe has also been pitching well winning his last two starts. He allowed only 1 run over 14 innings during that period.

Mets Links: Joe Torre, Dysfunction, Team Photo

I’m clearing out the list of links that I’ve been holding onto now that the Mets are mathematically eliminated from NL East contention. They’re still 11 games behind the Giants for the wild card with 13 games left to play though! Keep holding out hope.

Yahoo Sports– Jeff Passan wrote a scathing column about the dysfunctional Mets. He squarely lays blame on Jeff Wilpon for running the team into the ground. It’s a good read and, although harsh, it’s hard to argue with his points.

Daily News – Mike Lupica writes about the possibility of the Mets bringing Joe Torre back 30 years later with Wally Backman as his bench coach. I find this really hard to believe on several levels. I can’t see Torre wanting to manage a team in disarray. And I can’t see low-key Torre and high-strung Backman as a good fit together.

ESPN – Adam Rubin writes that the Mets will PhotoShop Johan Santana into the 2010 team photo but K-Rod won’t be included. It’s another sign that he won’t be back with the Mets next season for the final year of his contract.

Daily News – Kevin Mitchell will stand trial for punching a guy on a golf course that said something Mitchell didn’t like. It’s certainly not Mitchell’s first run-in with fist-to-cuffs.

MetsBlog – The Mets have been calling season ticket holders offering them free tickets to one of the final games of this season. The seats have been empty, so why not have some bodies in the park buying food and concessions?

Mets 6 – Pirates 2 September 16th 2010

Less Than 1000 People at Citi Field?

The Mets complete their first 4 Game sweep of the year, Mike Pelfrey earns his career high 15th win, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits whiling driving in the go ahead run in the 6th inning, making the score 3-2.

Angel Pagan continues his outstanding year with 3 hits, 2 RBI’s and an awesome catch in center and with a little help from the inept Pirates, the Mets pull above .500 for the first time in almost a month.

Initially, the game was delayed due to the fact an unconfirmed tornado touched down less than a mile from Citi Field. The hazardous weather conditions pushed the first pitch back to 7:20pm.

The crazy weather and the fact the Mets were playing the Pirates resulted in the lowest turnout I have ever seen at a Major League game. There might have been less than 1,000 people in the stands which made the dozen or so Pirates fans stand out that much more but they weren’t really vocal. They may be having a worse year than we are but they did not have the expectations the Mets had.  I’m still not sure why there was the one Philly fan attending the game but he eventually got kicked out to some cheers, the loudest noise of the night. Aside from that, the game was eerily quiet.

As a bonus, due to the weather, the Mets did announce that last nights tickets would be redeemable for one of the games against the Brewers, September 27th through the 30th. Another series that will not be well attended.

It looks like Mets fans are speaking with their wallets and staying away in droves unless the Wilpons can find more creative ways to give away tickets.

Mets 9 – Pirates 1 September 14, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got another great start from R.A. Dickey. He continues to surprise me with every start. I really thought he was a fluke. Tonight he threw a complete game 5- hitter and almost had a shutout, only giving up 1 run in the ninth.

The Mets offense lit up Zack Duke big time for 9 hits in 3.1 innings. They scored all 9 runs in the first four innings of the game. Carlos Beltran and Nick Evans homered in the game. Angel Pagan was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s as well.

The Mets take the first two of the four game series against the lowly Pirates. It looks like the Mets finally found a team they can match up with.
