John Maine Surgery Ends 2010 Season, Mets Career

The beat reporters are all writing that John Maine had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder yesterday and is done for the season. His career with the Mets is done as well. It’s a virtual lock that the Mets will non-tender Maine after this season. He has absolutely no value to the organization anymore, especially being arbitration eligible.

Maine’s career with the Mets started with such promise after being acquired from Baltimore in the Kris Benson deal in 2005. The highlight of his Mets career was his 2007 season going 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA.

Preview: Mets at Dodgers July 24, 2010

New York Mets (50-46) at Los Angeles Dodgers (51-46) 4:10pm

Mike Pelfrey (10-5 4.01) vs Carlos Monasterios (3-2 3.61)

What to watch: The Mets finally got a win last night and have a chance to take control of this series and possibly redeem themselves for an awful road trip this afternoon. Unfortunately, they have to do it behind Pelfrey who has just been dreadful. He hasn’t had a good start since the middle of June and appears to be getting worse with every start. He gave up 6 runs in 1.1 innings in Arizona in his last start. Monasterios has been working long relief for the Dodgers. He hasn’t started a game since he got rocked on June 18 by the Red Sox. We could see an offensive explosion by both teams today.

Report: Dwight Gooden Abandoned Family

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThis is the perfect storyline ahead of next weekend’s induction into the Mets Hall of Fame for Dwight Gooden. Doc’s wife tells the NY Post that she hasn’t seen him since June 22 and he’s left her and their two young children without financial support.

It sounds like Doc and his wife have been in family court recently, so they may be going through a divorce. His wife, Monique, may be talking to the media in an attempt to embarrass Doc before the Mets Hall of Fame ceremony. Who knows?

His wife’s side of the story paints a pretty ugly picture of substance abuse and abandonment of a young family by Doc:

“He’s left us with no money,” his slighted spouse said. “When I got here to Maryland, I had to go apply for social services, food stamps and health insurance for the kids. He has offered no financial assistance to us.”

We all know that Doc has had his up’s and down’s in life. It seems like whenever he starts getting to a point that the Mets organization can really bring him in something like this comes up. His arrest in March for driving under the influence with his 5 year-old son in the car didn’t help either.

I hope Doc can get his life back on track. But I feel like I’ve been saying that for years now though.

My Mets Rant After a Week to Forget

The team has lost 6 of 8 and is currently 4 games out of the wild card spot while trailing the Braves by 6.5 games in the NL East. Jason Bay, despite valiant offensive and defensive contributions in Friday night’s 6-1 win against the Dodgers, is giving fans reason to believe he is a bust. The team has won 4 of 15, all 4 of those wins have been started by ace Johan Santana who everyone (including myself) was writing off prior to the break. Mike Pelfrey has seen his ERA inflate to 4 and hasn’t been the same since Father’s Day weekend at Yankee Stadium. Carlos Beltran has returned quietly. He looks capable at bat, although he is still adjusting. However, not surprisingly, he does not appear to possess the same spring in his step as he has in years past roaming center field. With all this said, and more, this team somehow still finds itself in the mix for a playoff spot.

The San Francisco and Arizona series were extremely painful to watch. The team traveled to the West coast with no vigor, no fight. Instead of making a statement, they were embarrassed, and should have been swept by a solid Giants club, then went to the desert and bowed to Barry Enright and the last place Diamondbacks in a 3 straight. The managing was questionable, the execution was lackluster, and the heart was non-existent. The team looked dead on their feet. The 2009 New York Mets appeared to have been reborn. Mets’ Mike Pelfrey- Too Many Foul Balls?

I’m preparing myself for another horrible start from Mike Pelfrey today. In 2010, Pelfrey has been atrocious on the road to the tune of 4-3 with a 5.21 ERA. Opposing hitter are feasting on him for a .333 average versus .267 at home. Get ready for another nightmare on national TV this afternoon. As a matter of fact, July 2010 has been a nightmare for Pelfrey so far going 0-3 with a 15.30 ERA.

Pat Andriola of Fangraphs did an interesting analysis of Pelfrey after his last disaster of a start in Arizona. The conclusion was that Pelfrey is walking more batters recently, striking out fewer, and batters are hitting more foul balls. He’s not getting the swings and misses that he was early in the season.

Basically, Pelfrey is having a tough time putting away hitters, leading to more foul balls, which has driven his Strike% up. Although it’s only been four starts from Pelfrey, and that in and of itself can’t tell us much, we do have 367 pitches worth of data from which to glean something. Baseball information doesn’t have to be measured just in innings or at-bats; each pitch can tell us a whole lot (just ask Dave Allen or Jeremy Greenhouse).

With some players, like Pelfrey, there’s some unquantifiable element to their game that just doesn’t translate to statistical analysis. Although I like Andriola’s post, I think Pelfrey has a combination of two problems. He ran out of gas or had a “dead arm” period and he started getting down on himself when he wasn’t getting hitters our so easily. One of the things that stands out to me about top of the line pitchers is their ability to limit runs when they’re giving up hit and walks or what you’d call “fighting through” a lack of good stuff. In my mind, that’s Pelfrey’s problem. He isn’t bearing down and getting through five innings with limited damage when he doesn’t have his best stuff.

Mets 6 – Dodgers 1 July 23, 2010

Johan Santana was in complete control again going 7 innings and allowing only 1 run. He only gave up 5 hits and 1 walk. He was in control throughout the game. It was a classic Santana start.

The offense finally came alive after sleepwalking for the last week. The Mets had 8 hits and 4 walks. Surprisingly, Jason Bay was the star going 2 for 4 with a 3-run double in the eighth inning that broke the game open. He was out for early batting practice and it showed, not to mention he was moved down to seventh in the lineup so the pressure was off. Ike Davis also hit his 14th homer of the year off Vicente Padilla on a ridiculous Bugs Bunny curveball he was throwing.

The Mets outfield defense was on tonight too. All three outfielders were making plays including Bay doing a faceplant into the wall in left while making a great catch.

What to watch: The Mets are falling fast on this road trip but they may have a chance tonight behind Santana. He’s been pitching brilliantly in his last four starts only allowing 2 runs over that span. But the Mets still need to score. That could be a problem against Padilla who has pitched really well in his last five starts only allowing 5 runs over that span.
