http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Braves picked up 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning off Johan Santana and the game was over. The Mets defense didn’t help Santana out with some sloppy play in the field which we’re becoming accustomed to after the most recent home stand. The Mets didn’t have any errors, but they weren’t hustling in the field and allowed Braves runners to take extra bases.

The Mets offense wasn’t terrible with 8 hits and 3 walks. But they left 10 runners on base and couldn’t get any timely hitting. The only run scored was a Carlos Beltran RBI double in the fifth.

The Mets continue their downward trend. It’s starting to become eerily reminiscent of 2009 watching this team.

New York Mets (53-52) at Atlanta Braves (59-45) 7:10pm

Johan Santana (8-5 3.11) vs Tim Hudson (11-5 2.40)

TV: ESPN   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Braves have lost their last three series’. But they aren’t playing as poorly as the Mets by any stretch of the imagination. Hudson has been pitching pretty well. He’s won three of his last four starts. Santana got rocked in his last start by the Cardinals giving up 7 runs over 5.2 IP.

Derek Lowe (9-7 4.40) vs Johan Santana (6-5 3.15)

TV: WPIX   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid the sweep this afternoon. The good news is that the Braves have lost the last three games that Lowe started. Although, he really didn’t pitch that poorly in those games. Lowe is 3-4 with a 7.01 ERA in his career against the Mets over 8 starts. More good news is that Santana threw one of his best games as a Met in his last start, a complete game shutout against the Reds.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe bad news for the Mets is that Mike Pelfrey didn’t have it again this afternoon. He made it into the fifth inning, when the Braves scored all 4 runs, but he didn’t get an out in that inning. He had runners on frequently giving up 12 hits and 3 walks.

Hisanori Takahashi put in a nice effort in relief throwing 3 scoreless innings. I really think that long relief is going to be the highest and best use of his skills.

The Mets only put together 4 hits and 3 walks in the game. And Angel Pagan had 3 of those hits and 2 stolen bases. He just makes plays game after game. There’s no way they can sit him down when Carlos Beltran comes back.

The Mets lost the second straight home series today. They’ll try to avoid the sweep behind Johan Santana tomorrow afternoon.

Tim Hudson (8-4 2.44) vs Mike Pelfrey (10-3 3.39)

TV: FOX   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets need to take both games this weekend to win the series after losing the opener last night. The Braves have lost four of the last six games that Hudson started but he’s been pitching really well. He hasn’t pitched less than 7 innings in a starts since June 1. Pelfrey got crushed by the Reds in his last start for 7 runs over 4.2 innings. He really hasn’t looked great since his complete game win over the Padres on June 8.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets dropped the first of the three game series to the Braves. R.A. Dickey was solid going 6.2 innings and giving up 4 runs (3 earned). The Braves scored in the top of the first on a Jose Reyes error. Dickey held the game tight until the seventh inning when he gave up back to back homers to Melky Cabrera and Omar Infante. That’s where the Mets lost the game.

The Mets offense had 8 hits and 2 walks. Angel Pagan was 2 for 5 with a stolen base. The offensive star of the game was Dickey who went 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored.

The Mets fall to 4 games behind the Braves with the loss tonight but have Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana coming up this weekend.
