Preview: Braves at Mets Aug. 18, 2009

braves logoAtlanta Braves (62-56 Road: 30-29) at New York Mets (55-63 Home: 32-27) 7:10pm

Derek Lowe (12-7 4.08) vs. Oliver Perez (2-3 5.97)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Braves come to town hot, winning seven of their last nine games. Lowe has won his last five decisions and hasn’t lost a game since July 5. You already know about the Mets struggles but Perez has pitched well lately only allowing 2 earned runs over 11.2 innings in his last two starts. This will be Ryan Church‘s first game back at Citi Field since being traded to the Braves. I expect him to get a good welcome back from the crowd and everyone on the team, except for maybe Jerry Manuel.

Contest: Shea Stadium DVD

essential games of sheaI thought that all Mets fans could use some positive feelings about the team this week. You sure aren’t going that by watching the 2009 version of the team. To make you feel a little better about this franchise, I’m giving away a copy of the six DVD set The New York Mets Essential Games of Shea Stadium. It’s a $53.99 value at Amazon.

You’ll see the emotional first sporting event in New York after 9/11 against the Braves on Sept. 21, 2001, the Lenny Dykstra walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth against the Astros in the 1986 NLCS, and more. In all, there are six great Mets games that’ll make you feel good about this team. Even if it’s just until you watch the next live game.

The contest is for the best comment of the week (ending Wednesday Aug. 12, 2009). That’s when the current road trip wraps up in Arizona. The rules are:

  • You are NOT eligible to win if you’ve already won a prize from Metsreport.com since Jan. 1, 2009
  • Your shipping address must be in the continental United States
  • Your comment must appear on Metsreport.com, not any other website (like Facebook or Twitter)
  • I’ll judge the entries and determine one winner of the contest

Braves 7 – Mets 1 July 19, 2009

The Mets lose three out of four to the Braves in Atlanta this week. To add insult to injury (literally), Fernando Nieve had to leave the game on a cart in the top of the second inning with a strained quad muscle. He was legging out a grounder and came up lame after crossing first base. Get ready for Jon Niese‘s season debut.

The Mets offense only had 6 hits and 1 walk in the game. There is no offense from this team. Daniel Murphy (hitting .238) was batting third in the order. He couldn’t even stick with most teams in the league and he’s hitting third for the Mets. This is beyond ugly.

The Mets head to Washington, then Houston.

braves logoNew York Mets (43-47 Road: 18-27)  at Atlanta Braves (45-46 Home: 23-22) 6:05 pm

Fernando Nieve (3-3 3.03) vs. Javier Vazquez (6-7 2.95)

TV: ESPN RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to get the split of the four games series if they can win tonight. Nieve has lost three straight games now. Although he didn’t pitch badly in his last start giving up 3 runs in 6 innings to the Reds. Vazquez is 2-2 in his last four decisions but he hasn’t given up more than 2 runs in a start since June 17. Don’t forget that it’s a Sunday night game on ESPN but they’re starting at 6:00 because of the ESPY award show.

Game Preview: Mets at Braves [Game 90] July 18, 2009

braves logoNew York Mets (42-47 Road: 17-27)  at Atlanta Braves (45-45 Home: 23-21) 4 :10 pm

Johan Santana (10-7 3.09) vs. Kenshin Kawakami (5-6 4.26)

TV: FOX RadioWFAN

What to watch: As usual, Santana has to stop the bleeding with a great start not a good one. It seems like the Mets have been putting him in this position for a year and a half now. He was lights out against the Reds over 7 innings in his last start. We’ll see if he can do it again today. Gary Sheffield is out after leaving the game with leg cramps last night. He may be able to pinch hit today. Kawakami has been pitching well and hasn’t lost a decision since May 27. So this won’t be an easy task today.
