The Mets got their brains beat in on national TV by the underachieving Cubs today. The biggest culprit was Bobby Parnell getting ripped in his third consecutive start. Today he gave up 8 runs in 4.2 innings. He’s not fooling anyone with his weak slider that only appears to break about half of the time he throws it.

The Mets managed 9 hits but only two were for extra bases. Those were only doubles by Jeff Francoeur and Brian Schneider. Although Schneider had a 2 for 4 day and raised his season average to .188.

The game was over in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Cubs scored 6 including a grand slam by Jake Fox. All of the runs were on Parnell.

We did get our first look at Lance Broadway today. He was acquired from the White Sox in the Ramon Castro deal. He gave up 2 runs in 3 innings of mop-up duty to finish off the blowout game.

The Mets have lost the first two games of the series in Chicago. They try to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon.

Bobby Parnell (3-6 5.08) vs. Ryan Dempster (7-7 4.07)

What to watch: The Cubs are 2-4 in the last 6 games that Dempster started. Dempster certainly isn’t living up to the 4-year/$52 million contract he signed before this season. His career year last season at 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA is proving to be an aberration. The “Parnell Experiment” has really hit the wall. In his last two starts he’s given up 14 earned runs in 8 innings. If the wind is blowing out at Wrigley today this could be a very long game.

This was an unusually positive game for the Mets with a great start from Bobby Parnell. In his second big league start Parnell threw 86 pitches over 6 innings only giving up 3 hits and no walks to go along with 7 strikeouts. It was a big leap forward for Parnell in his transition to pitching in the rotation.

The Mets offense didn’t show up again tonight. They only managed 5 hits and 2 walks in the game. But Angel Pagan led the game off with a home run to left field, his third of the season.

Barry Zito (8-10 4.40) vs. Bobby Parnell (2-4 3.94)

What to watch: The Mets and Giants start a four game series at Citi Field tonight. The Giants are 1.5 games behind the Rockies in the wild card standings and the Mets are done for 2009. Parnell was limited to 68 pitches in his last start but should be able to throw as many as 85 tonight. Zito has been pitching really well lately. The Giants have won the last four games that he started.

Mets In The News Aug. 10, 2009

The Mets won yesterday in San Diego, to salvage one of four games, so we all feel good about this team now, right? Maybe not. But they’ll be in Arizona for a few days and there’s still plenty to talk about.

The big news in this game was that Bobby Parnell was making his first big league start. It turned out to be a pretty rotten one. He only went 2.1 innings 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks. It took him 68 pitches to get into the third inning. He’ll get stretched out in future starts but this first one wasn’t pretty.

The Mets non-existent offense only managed 1 run on a solo homer by Alex Cora in the first inning. They only put together 5 hits and 3 walks as a team. Unbelievably bad.

Luis Castillo did make a pinch hitting appearance but Gary Sheffield didn’t play again.

The Mets drop their third straight game to a pitiful Padres team and try to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon.
