Mets Over Marlins 8-4 April 11, 2009

There are really two stories in this game: Livan Hernandez pitched really well, and Luis Castillo had a great game. Hernandez went 6.2 innings giving up 2 runs. What a performance from the fifth starter! This spot in the rotation was supposed to be a contest but Hernandez locked it up pretty early this spring. He continued to show that he’s still got something left in the tank.

Luis Castillo went 4 for 4 with 3 runs and 1 RBI. He took early batting practice with Jerry Manuel before the game and it really paid off. He should’ve been 5 for 5 but had a bunt hit taken away by the scorer who ruled it a sacrifice.

The Mets still left 15 runners on base but the offense looked much better than it has the last few days. Carlos Beltran had 4 LOB himself.

The Mets go to 3-2 on the season and go again with the Marlins tomorrow at 1:10 pm.

Marlins Over Mets 5-4 In Walkoff April 10, 2009

The good news for the Mets tonight is that John Maine looked pretty good. He went five innings giving up two runs, both on solo homers from Hanely Ramirez and Dan Uggla. He threw 83 pitches and 54 strikes. That’s a nice game for Maine who struggled at times during spring training.

The Mets offense came from Daniel Murphy, Carlos Beltran, and Ryan Church who had three hits each tonight. But as a team the Mets were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. That’s been plaguing the team throughout the early season. Beltran had a solo homer in the sixth to put the Mets on the board and an RBI ground out in the seventh.

Jeremy Reed came through with a huge pinch-hit single in the ninth to tie the game. But it wasn’t enough as Pedro Feliciano and Darren O’Day coughed up the lead in the bottom of the frame. Jorge Cantu singled in the winning run in the form of Emilio Bonifacio. Bonifacio looks like he’s going to be a good player. He’s got blazing speed.

The Marlins are still undefeated at 4-0 while the Mets drop to 2-2.

Mike Francesa, hosting the annual Bar-A end of...

Yesterday’s visit to Port St. Lucie didn’t go as planned for Mike Francesa of WFAN. We have some clips below from his interviews. But the big news is that Francesa couldn’t get interviews with David Wrigh and Ryan Church. Both refused to do interviews with him and even meet with him to discuss their problems.

Francesa went on to say that he tried to work through Mets PR man Jay Horowitz to meet with both players to discuss the situation. Both players refused the meeting. Wright didn’t like Francesa’s comments about his problems hitting in the clutch. And Church didn’t like Francesa’s comments about Church disliking New York.

Francesa said during the show that Church didn’t matter but Wright was immature about the situation and that he has some growing up to do. He also likened Wright’s immaturity about the interview to his problems hitting in the clutch.

It sounded to me like sour grapes that he couldn’t get the player interviews that he wanted. Francesa comes across as pompous at times. I think he was planning on generating some big ratings by having both players on to discuss their problems. When it didn’t happen, he was upset and lashed out at both labelling Church as inconsequential and Wright as immature. Good stuff…

Onto the interviews that Francesa did get:

Omar Minaya

Carlos Beltran

Francisco Rodriguez

Johan Santana

Phillies’ Rollins Ends Mets Talk

Jimmy RollinsPhiladelphia Philles shortstop Jimmy Rollins spoke to reporters yesterday at spring training in Clearwater, Florida. Among other topics he discussed, he said that his World Series hardware will put an end to his talk about the Mets.

The Mets and Phillies have engaged in a three year war of words. And the Phillies have come out on top in the standings for the last two seasons. Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes have continued the verbal sparring this spring, mentioning their disdane for Cole Hamels calling the Mets “choke artists” during a radio interview in December.

From SI.com:

It has been pretty funny just to hear it going on and on and on,” Rollins said. “I sit there and I laugh and say, ‘This is still going on. They’re still rolling with that?

It’s going to be a fun game any time we play them,” Rollins said. “But I guess when Cole is pitching, they are going to step it up and, of course, we are going to stand up for Cole, so that is going to force us to step it up. But that just brings out the best in both teams. We’re going to win, but it definitely will bring out the best in both teams.

I have to say that I’m surprised we haven’t seen the war of words spill out onto the field over the last few years. There haven’t been any bean ball wars that escalated the situation. Hopefully, it’ll stay that way. Now that the Phillies are the world champs they can rest on that without engaging with the Mets this season.

Mets Win 7-6 Over Cubs In Bottom Of Ninth

The Mets and Cubs played through the rain tonight to finish nine innings, and the Mets needed every one of them. Pedro Martinez was bad again giving up five runs over six innings, including two runs in the first inning.

Ricardo Rincon came in and gave up a first pitch homer to Micah Hoffpauir, his second homer of the night. It looked like the game and possibly the season was lost.

Surprisingly, the Mets fought back scoring runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. Carlos Beltran had the big RBI single in the ninth to score Jose Reyes with the winning run.

It’s a dramatic victory that showed this team isn’t dead yet.

Cubs Clobber Mets Niese In 9-5 Win

The Mets lost their third straight game after starter Jon Niese got rocked for six runs over three plus innings. The ultimate embarrassment was giving up a grand slam to the opposing pitcher Jason Marquis. It was the second opposing pitcher to hit a grand slam off the Mets this season.

The shaky bullpen went on to give up three more runs over the final six innings.

The Mets had 11 hits on the night but it was all for naught again as the Mets continue another late season slide.

Carlos Beltran was shaken up when he hit the wall hard making a catch. He did stay in the game despite the nay-sayers that have called him “soft” for the past four seasons.
