Delgado HR Lifts Mets Over Brewers 4-2

Eric Gagne blew another game for the Brewers by giving up three runs in the eighth including a two-run homer to Carlos Delgado. The resurgent Delgado went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Carlos Beltran, Daniel Murphy, and Jose Reyes also had two hits each today.

Beltran left the game in the ninth inning after sliding into home safely and running into home plate umpire Ed Rapuano. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. But it didn’t look like a serious injury.

Mets pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts today including 10 by starter Johan Santana. He went six innings giving up two runs including one on a balk with Prince Fielder on third base.

It was an unusual game for the Mets: scoring big runs late in the game, and the bullpen working through three innings cleanly.

Mets Rip Phillies Lidge For Big 6-3 Win

The Mets came away with a huge win tonight in Philly on an eighth inning rally off Rudy Saenz and Brad Lidge. What a game!

Carlos Delgado hit two solo homers and went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s in the game. Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran both had three hit games tonight too.

Johan Santana barely had a quality start going six innings and giving up three runs, all of them scored on two home runs.

These teams are really going at it like it’s October already. You gotta love that. The Mets and Phillies has turned into one of the best rivalries in baseball.

Pelfrey CG Leads Mets Over Astros 9-1

It’s really amazing how Mike Pelfrey has progressed this season, going from 2-6 to start the season to 13-8 now. He threw his second consecutive complete game tonight, the first such occurance since Bret Saberhagen in 1995. He only gave up one run in the ninth inning on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts, another incredible performance.

The big offense came from Carlos Delgado hitting two 3-run homers in the game. Jose Reyes was 3 for 4 including a triple and a double with 2 runs and 2 RBI’s.Ryan Church was 2 for 4 in his third game back from the DL. And Luis Castillo took and o-fer in his return and heard about it from the crowd. Argenis Reyes and Damion Easley have become fan favorites here, so taking away their playing time is going to draw some boos for Castillo.

The Mets hold the NL East lead going into Philly tomorrow night with a great win.

Mets Sweep Braves With Dramatic 5-4 Victory

The Mets swept the Braves in this three game series with a tremendous win in the bottom of the ninth. David Wright doubled in the inning and Carlos Delgado drove him in with a line drive to left field that Omar Infante lost in the lights.

Pedro Martinez went seven innings giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk. He also had six strikeouts. His first pitch of the game was crushed for a homer by Yunel Escobar. This is the kind of performance that we can expect from Pedro on a regular basis at this point. He’s an average pitcher.

Luis Ayala did a nice job in relief to finish the eighth and cruise through the ninth.

The offense came from Carlos Delgado with a 5 for 5 night. His first five hit game in ten years. He also had three RBI’s including the game winner. David Wright also had three hits including a solo homer in the fifth and the clutch double in the ninth.

The down side is that the Mets left nine runners on base in the game, but a win is a win.

The Phillies lost to the Nationals so the Mets take a 2.5 game lead in the division.

Mets Come Back For 7-3 Win Over Braves

The Mets scored five runs in the eighth inning to shock the Braves. The key hit was Carlos Delgado’s double with the bases loaded to score two runs and take the lead for good.

Oliver Perez didn’t have it tonight. He got a quality start, for what that’s worth, going 6.1 innings giving up three runs. But he didn’t have good control and was in trouble for much of the night.

The Braves bullpen completely imploded in the eighth. It was good to see that can happen to someone beside the Mets for once.

Mets Complete Sweep Of Nationals 9-3

It’s still amazing to me that Oliver Perez has become a consistently good pitcher. He got another quality start in tonight going 6.2 innings for the win. He only gave up three runs on six hits and three walks with eight strikeouts.

Brian Schneider and Carlos Delgado both homered in the game. The Mets put together a nice rally in the ninth inning to add four insurance runs. That was key to reduce pressure on Aaron Heilman closing out the game.

The Mets complete the sweep in Washington and fly to Pittsburgh tonight for a four game series starting tomorrow night.

Mets Power Blasts Marlins 8-6

The Mets got home runs from Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, and Daniel Murphy’s first career long ball. David Wright and Beltran both had three hits in the game. The offense was on tonight big time. The Mets had 13 hits and a walk but only left four men on base.

Brian Stokes spot start was pretty successful. He went 5.2 innings giving up four runs. He’s got a mid-90’s fastball but it’s straight as an arrow. He also throws a lot balls high in the strike zone. It’ll be interesting to see if the Mets keep him around in the bullpen.

Joe Smith was ugly out of the bullpen in the eighth inning giving up two runs on three hits and only getting one out. But Aaron Heilman got his second save in as many days in another impressive inning.

The Phillies won tonight so the Mets hold even at one game back.
