Chicago Cubs (5-8) at New York Mets (5-8)  7:10 pm

Carlos Zambrano (1-1 9.45) vs. Mike Pelfrey (2-0 1.29)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The hoopla surrounding Ike Davis will probably still continue for a few days. Pelfrey has been outstanding so far this season. And Zambrano has been somewhat hittable. Although he did just have one horrendous start to begin the season and his last two haven’t been that bad. The Mets go for two wins in a row over the Cubs.

Mets 6 – Cubs 1 April 19, 2010

Chicago Cubs at New York Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsIt wasn’t lost on us that the Mets won tonight, but it was all about Ike Davis tonight. He made his major league debut tonight and didn’t disappoint. The crowd gave him a huge ovation for his first at-bat and he singled over second base. He finished the night 2 for 4 with an RBI. Not a bad way to start a career.

Jon Niese also had a nice start. He went 5.2 IP giving up only 1 unearned run. The Cubs were hitting him but he kept the damage to a minimum. It was a very good recovery from his last bad start in Colorado.

The hero of the night was Angel Pagan, who hit a a long 2-run homer to left-center to put the Mets up for good in the bottom of the seventh.

On a positive note, Jason Bay went 2 for 3 tonight. Hopefully, that will get him out of his slump.

Chicago Cubs (5-7) at New York Mets (4-8)  7:10 pm

Randy Wells (1-0 2.92) vs. Jon Niese (0-1 6.55)

TV: ESPN, SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: This is an interesting series because both teams aren’t playing as well as expected so far this season. Niese got hit hard in his last start in Colorado, giving up 5 runs in 5 IP. Wells wasn’t much better in his last start in Milwaukee giving up 4 runs in 6.1 IP. The Mets still haven’t won a series yet this season but the big story all week is going to be when, or if, the Mets are going to call up Ike Davis from Buffalo to play first base.

Cubs – Mets Four Game Series April 19-22, 2010

Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella yells at first base umpire Ted Barrett during his team's game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field in Chicago

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Cubs come to town for a four game series starting tonight on ESPN. They’re 5-5 in their last 10 games and just lost a home series to the lowly Astros. It looks like they’re pretty much in the same position as the Mets, under-performing at 5-7.

The Cubs roster is in a pretty decent position. They only have three players on the disabled list, all pitchers. Ted Lilly, Angel Guzman, and Esmailin Caridad are all hurt.

The Mets avoided the sweep in Chicago on the back of Nelson Figueroa. He pitched into the eighth inning with 10 strikeouts and only allowing 1 earned run. He’s auditioning for someone for next season and really put on a show today. It still surprises me that they don’t give Figueroa a shot at the long man job out of the bullpen. I’d rather see him on the roster than someone like Tim Redding next season.

The offense was somewhat potent with 12 hits including 3 by Angel Pagan. Although the Mets only managed 1 extra base hit, a triple by Anderson Hernandez. The wind was blowing in today and the Cubs didn’t have any extra base hits.

The Mets are off tomorrow and start a series in Colorado on Tuesday night with David Wright back in the lineup.

Nelson Figueroa (1-3 5.40) vs. Carlos Zambrano (7-3 3.80)

TV: WPIX

What to watch: The Mets are trying to avoid the sweep today before they have a road off-day and then head to Colorado. Figueroa is making his fourth start of the season and pitched well in his last start at Florida. He went 5 innings only giving up 1 earned run in a 2-1 loss. Zambrano got bombed for 8 runs in 4.1 innings in his last start against the Nationals. But prior to that, the Cubs had won five straight games that he started.

SAN FRANCISCO - MAY 16: Bobby Parnell #39 of ...

The Mets got their brains beat in on national TV by the underachieving Cubs today. The biggest culprit was Bobby Parnell getting ripped in his third consecutive start. Today he gave up 8 runs in 4.2 innings. He’s not fooling anyone with his weak slider that only appears to break about half of the time he throws it.

The Mets managed 9 hits but only two were for extra bases. Those were only doubles by Jeff Francoeur and Brian Schneider. Although Schneider had a 2 for 4 day and raised his season average to .188.

The game was over in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Cubs scored 6 including a grand slam by Jake Fox. All of the runs were on Parnell.

We did get our first look at Lance Broadway today. He was acquired from the White Sox in the Ramon Castro deal. He gave up 2 runs in 3 innings of mop-up duty to finish off the blowout game.

The Mets have lost the first two games of the series in Chicago. They try to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon.
