Mets 2010 All-Stars Wright and Reyes

David Wright will be the lone Mets starter in the 2010 MLB All-Star game. He’s making his fifth appearance this season and is making a really nice comeback from a dreadful 2009 season. I have to admit that I didn’t vote for Wright. My 2010 All-Star vote was for Scott Rolen at third base. I tried to be objective and I just think that Rolen is having a better season than Wright and he’s playing for a first place team. That has a little bit of weight in my mind.

Jose Reyes is coming off the bench this year behind Hanley Ramirez. It’s his third All-Star appearance and he’s on the roster because Troy Tulowitzki is hurt. Fellow Mets report writer John Wenk voted for both Wright and Reyes this year. I just didn’t see either one as a solid starter.

I’ve heard some griping from Mets fans that Mike Pelfrey wasn’t selected by manager Charlie Manuel for the pitching staff. But he’s scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Braves, so there’s no way that he could pitch in the game. It’s too bad because his numbers are right there for the All-Stars despite the fact that he hasn’t had his best stuff for the last four starts.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got another outstanding start from Jon Niese going 7 IP and only giving up 1 run. He also had a career high 8 strikeouts and no walks. He’s really become such a consistent solid presence in the rotation. He also helped himself at the plate. He went 1 for 3 with an RBI double.

The Mets offense had 8 hits and 2 walks tonight. They were led by David Wright going 3 for 5 with a double and a run scored. Alex Cora had a bases loaded triple in the 4 run fourth inning that broke the game open.

The game got interesting in the bottom of the ninth when Elmer Dessens gave up a hit and a walk with two outs. K-Rod came in and gave up 2 hits allowing both inherited runners to score. Oddly, the game ended when he picked off Roger Bernadina at second base. It was one of the biggest bonehead plays I’ve seen in a while by Bernadina.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets barely came away from this series with one game. Jose Reyes couldn’t play tonight with a strained lower back that happened during batting practice. Once again, Mike Pelfrey didn’t have it tonight. He gave up 4 runs in 4.2 IP and a whopping 12 hits. The bullpen took over and held on pretty well. Although Francisco Rodriguez made it interesting with the winning run on base in the ninth during his four out save.

The Mets offense was decent with 10 hits and no walks. David Wright and Jesus Feliciano both had 2 hits in the game. Both of Wright’s hits were doubles off the wall and he had 2 RBI’s.

The Mets lose the series but were helped out by some shoddy Marlins defense that kept them in the game tonight. They had a ridiculous 4 errors that accounted for 2 of the Mets runs. Waiting out the rain delay was well worth getting the win tonight.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsPedro Feliciano gave it up in the bottom of the ninth after a great comeback by the Mets in the top of the inning to score 2 runs to tie it. They overcame another horrible start by Hisanori Takahashi who gave up 6 runs in 5.2 IP. All of the runs against him were scored with two outs in the third inning including a grand slam by Hanley Ramirez. There are very serious questions about Takahashi’s viability as a starting pitcher. This is his fourth awful start now this season.

The Mets offense was more than solid with 12 hits and 2 walks. David Wright had the big game going 3 for 4 and raising his average to .310. Chris Carter had a big pinch hit double in the ninth that spurred the rally that tied the game. Marlins right fielder Mike Stanton looked like a fish out of water in the field, excuse the pun. But he’s a butcher in the outfield and that helped the Mets on a couple of occasions including Carter’s double.

The Mets drop the first two games of the series and try to avoid the sweep tomorrow in Puerto Rico.

David Wright Could Be MVP – We Believe in Comebacks

May 21, 2010 - New York, New York, U.S. - DAVID WRIGHT during the Mets vs Yankees at Citi Field in Flushing NY. The Yanks won 2-1.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsDavid Wright’s career hit a low point in 2009.

Sure, he hit .307, but he had a career low in home runs (10) and runs batted in (72).

Not to mention, the Mets won under 80 games for the first time since 2004, which was David Wright’s rookie campaign.

Coming off of that awful, putrid, and just plain unlucky 2009 season, the Mets started a promotional campaign claiming “We Believe in Comebacks”. Considering the terrible taste the Mets left in their fans’ mouths the past three seasons, not many people believed the Mets would be making any type of comeback this season.

But the Mets currently sit ten games above .500, and in the National League Wild Card lead. They’re also being led offensively by David Wright, who’s hitting .301 with 14 homers (four more than all of last year) and 61 RBI’s, which leads the National League.

Wright may have been happy getting a Comeback Player of the Year award this season the way last year went. But so far, he’s looking like a front-runner in the NL Most Valuable Player race.

At the moment, Wright is on pace to hit 30 homers and drive in 131 runs, all while maintaining that batting average above .300. Continue reading “David Wright Could Be MVP – We Believe in Comebacks”

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsJon Niese and three relievers combined on a 7-hit shutout of the Twins to win the series today. Niese returned to outstanding form today. He was in complete control through 6 IP allowing only 4 hits.

The Mets offense really pounded the Twins pitchers with 14 hits and 1 walk. They had 3-hit games from Jesus Feliciano, David Wright, and Jeff Francoeur. Most of their scoring was from three home runs by Wright, Francoeur, and Ike Davis. Francoeur was a triple away from the cycle today too.

The Mets take another series 2-1 and finish the home stand at 4-2.

Mets 5 – Twins 2 June 25, 2010

June 13, 2010: David Wright for the New York Mets in action during an interleague game against the hometown Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. The Mets completed the 3-game sweep by beating the Orioles 11 - 4.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got another solid start tonight from Mike Pelfrey despite the fact that he didn’t seem to be at his best again. That’s the sign of him maturing. He went 6 IP and gave up only 2 runs. Pelfrey gave up a leadoff home run to Denard Span and gave up 6 hits but didn’t walk anyone.

The Mets offense really capitalized on their opportunities. They had 7 hits and 1 walk. David Wright had a big game going 2 for 3 with 2 runs, 2 RBI’s, and a solo home run to right field. His average is up to .298 for the season and he now has 59 RBI’s.

The Mets stay hot at home and have a chance to take another series this weekend.
