Preview: Yankees at Mets May 23, 2010

New York Yankees (26-17) at (New York Mets (21-23)   8:05 pm

CC Sabathia (4-2 3.43) vs Johan Santana  (3-2 3.72)

TV: ESPN   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Yankees play the rubber game of the series. Sabathia has had a couple of starts this season that weren’t that great. And the Yankees have lost the last two games that he started. Santana has pitched extremely well in his last three starts but the Mets have lost two of three. It should be another good pitching match up tonight.

John Maine Situation Leaves Rotation A Mess

The mystery injury to John Maine last night leaves the Mets starting rotation in a bigger mess than we thought it was already. And it couldn’t come at a worse time for Jerry Manuel. Many of us already have a death watch on his managerial career. Of course, injuries aren’t his fault but he needs some good things to happen soon.

R.A. Dickey and Hisanori Takahashi are already in the rotation. That’s something we never would have thought before the season. With Maine appearing to be out for some period of time, we might be looking at another call-up from Triple-A Buffalo. Fortunately, Pat Misch and Dillon Gee have been pitching pretty well. But at this rate there won’t be anybody left in Buffalo.

To be left with Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey before the end of May is just a nightmare. I think with Jon Niese injured and Maine possibly hurt, we may need to re-visit the issue of the Mets medical and training staff. It doesn’t seem possible that this many players could be hurt within two seasons. The Mets chose not to change the medical and training staff after the 2009 “season of the injury” and we may be headed down that road again.

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets got a great start from Johan Santana, as usual, going 7 IP and giving up 2 ER’s on a homer by Troy Glaus in the third inning. Santana seemed to get stronger as the game went on. Pedro Feliciano took over in the eighth and started the ninth out by giving up a hit to McCann that would eventually be the winning run.

The Mets had only five total hits in the game. The two runs were solo homers, both in the fifth inning by Ike Davis and Jeff Francoeur.

The Mets lost on a horrible bottom of the ninth. Jenry Mejia relieved Feliciano and looked scared. He fell on the mound after a pitch and walked Escobar when he was trying to bunt with a man on base. The game was lost when Melky Cabrera chopped a ball to third, David Wright picked it up and threw wide of first allowing the runner on second to score. It wasn’t a terrible throw and looked like Davis could have come off the base to get it.

Wright’s wild throw capped off a terrible night for him going 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts. It’s a rough way to lose a game.

The Mets split the two game series in Atlanta and head to Washington for two games.

Preview: Mets at Braves May 18, 2010

New York Mets (19-20) at Atlanta Braves (18-20)  7:10 pm

Johan Santana (3-2 3.88) vs Kris Medlen (1-1 2.35)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets go for the sweep behind Santana whose last start was excellent in a 2-1 loss in Florida. He went 7 IP and gave up 1 unearned run. Medlen has been pitching out of the bullpen mostly, only making one start this year. But he’s been pitching really well. I wouldn’t expect him to last long though. The Mets should get into the Braves bullpen pretty quickly.

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets got a great start from Johan Santana. He locked up with Josh Johnson in an excellent pitchers dual. The aces were as good as advertised tonight. And it was a nice comeback from a couple of rough starts for Santana. He went 7 IP only giving up 1 run, an unearned run on his own throwing error.

As expected, the Mets didn’t do much hitting against Johnson. They only had 4 hits in the game and Jerry Manuel promised changes to the lineup in the coming days. The only run they scored was on a Rod Barajas single in the second inning scoring Jason Bay.

The game was lost in the bottom of the ninth when Fernando Nieve threw a wild pitch that allowed Cody Ross to score from third. Dan Uggla was pinch hitting at the plate and Nieve uncorked a wild breaking ball inside and in the dirt that Barajas couldn’t handle. It’s an ugly way to lose a game and the Mets fourth loss in their last five games.

Preview: Mets at Marlins May 13, 2010

New York Mets (18-16) at Florida Marlins (16-18)  7:10 pm

Johan Santana (3-2 4.54) vs Josh Johnson (3-1 3.35)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Marlins start up a four game series in Miami tonight. The Marlins just won 2 of 3 from the Cubbies in Chicago. Johnson has been his usual rock-solid self with the Marlins winning two of the last three games that he started. Santana recovered a bit in his last start going 7.2IP against the Giants, but he did give up 4 ER. That’s shaky for him.

Mets Links: Carlos Beltran, Phillies Cheating, More

New York Mets v Washington Nationals

The team is in Miami for four games and really needs to show something against a division opponent. It’s warm in Miami, so Oliver Perez doesn’t have the built in excuse for getting bombed. Anyway, here are the links.

Carlos Beltran started some light running in Port St. Lucie. He says that he feels fine and is hoping to avoid another knee surgery.

The Phillies were caught on camera stealing signs against the Rockies. The Rox filed a complaint with MLB and the Phillies were reprimanded. The Mets filed the same complaint with the league two weeks ago when they roughed up Johan Santana. And Santana seems to agree with the assessment.

Jeff Francoeur has cooled off and the stat guys are out for his head again. I’m really not liking what I’m seeing from Francoeur right now. It looks like he’s regressing to his pre-Mets days.

MLB gave the Phillies three extra home games to avoid the G20 Summit in Toronto. Francoeur told the Daily News that it’s “bullshit”. And I couldn’t agree more.

Yahoo’s Slumpbot .200 has some good stats on the not-so-graceful aging Santana. They recommend that he find his change-up again quickly.
