Carlos Beltran May Try To Run Today

This is the big day that we’ve all been waiting for. Well, maybe not. The day we’ve all been waiting for is the day that Carlos Beltran actually re-joins the Mets and is in the lineup. In lieu of that, we’ve been waiting for the day when Beltran starts running again.

Today is that day. The reports from Port St. Lucie, where Beltran has been rehabbing from knee surgery, are that he’ll try to run today for the first time. If so, it should be another three weeks or so before we start looking at a timetable for his return to the Mets’ lineup.

Beltran has already missed 100 games over the last two seasons. Anytime a player signs a 7-year contract, you have to believe that there will be a couple of bad seasons during that contract. And those bad ones will probably be towards the end of the deal. That’s exactly what’s happening with Beltran and we can probably expect the same from Johan Santana in a few years. Players are bound to break down at some point.

It seems like it’s been so long since we’ve seen him play. To jog your memory, here are Beltran’s career averages over 162 games:

Mets 5 – Giants 4 May 8, 2010

New York Mets Oliver Perez, Jose Reyes and David Wright welcome batter Henry Blanco at home plate after his solo home run beat the San Francisco Giants in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThis post is a little late coming but I was out and listening to most of the game on the radio this afternoon. The Mets won their second game in a row on a walk-off home run, this time by Henry Blanco in 11 innings. It’s the ninth straight home win for the Mets and takes the series from the Giants.

Johan Santana recovered nicely from his horrible start in Philly. He went 7.2 IP giving up 4 ER. But it should have been 3. Fernando Nieve and Pedro Feliciano relieved Santana in the eighth and both gave up hits without getting an out.

K-Rod pitched pretty well in the ninth and tenth innings. He did give up 2 walks and has a 1.15 WHIP, which is a little higher than you’d like to see from a top of the line closer.

The Mets had 7 hits in the game and Blanco was 3 for 5 in the game including the game winner in the eleventh. Clearly, he was the offensive hero of the game.

Mets 2010 – Year of the No-Hitter?

It’s well documented that only the Mets, Rays, and Padres haven’t had a no-hitter in their histories. When I started searching the Internet for facts and figures on futility, I came across someone that has a Mets blog about the elusive no-hitter. The Mets are up to 7,673 games without one now. And the Mets have had 33 one-hitters over the years including the famous July 4, 1972 no-hitter that Tom Seaver lost with one out in the ninth against the Padres. You can see the complete list of one-hitters in Mets history.

Tom Seaver would go on to throw a no-hitter in 1978 for the Cincinnati Reds, the year after the Mets traded him away. Nolan Ryan had a one-hitter for the Mets in April 1970 and would go on to throw seven no-hitters in his illustrious post-Mets career including one in May 1991 at the age of 44. Preview: Giants at Mets May 8, 2010

San Francisco Giants (17-11) at New York Mets (16-13)   1:10 pm

Todd Wellemeyer (1-3 5.55) vs Johan Santana (3-2 4.50)

TV: WPIX   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Hopefully, the Mets can keep the momentum going this afternoon against the Giants after last night’s walk-off homer by Rod Barajas. This should be an interesting game for Santana. He was torched for 10 runs in 3.2 IP in his last start in Philly, his worst start as a Mets player and probably ever. If he doesn’t bounce back with a good start today, we need to hit the panic button that something is really wrong. Wellemeyer’s last start at home against Philly was excellent. He went 7 IP giving up 2 ER and got the win. After that he relived Jonathan Sanchez in Colorado and threw 3 IP of scoreless relief.

Mets Links: Mike Pelfrey, David Wright, More

It’s time for an off-day full of links after a poor road trip. The Giants are coming to town tomorrow for a weekend series. And there were several curious decisions made by Jerry Manuel during the road trip that made many of us scratch our heads. It’s a good day to take a breath, get back on track this weekend, and get ready for the Mother’s Day pink bats and sweatbands on Sunday.

Here are the links:

  • Daily News– Mike Pelfrey asked to go back to New York after Sunday’s game in Philly to have his right shoulder examined. He felt some tightness in it before Saturday’s start.
  • Mets.com – The MRI on Pelfrey’s shoulder didn’t show anything and he says that he’s ready to make his next scheduled start on Friday night.
  • Metsblog.com – Interesting stats on the Mets poor pinch-hitting this season. Good questions are raised about some of the guys in Buffalo that are raking right now.
  • Daily News – Carlos Beltran has a new knee brace and plans to start running late this week or early next week. Didn’t we hear the same thing about Beltran a month ago?
  • Daily News – Daniel Murphy is still rehabbing his knee injury in Port St. Lucie with no timetable for a return to games.
  • NJ.com – Kelvim Escobar is having season-ending shoulder surgery. He never even made it to opening day. But the Mets owe him $1.25 million for his troubles this season.
  • Fangraphs – Dave Allen writes a good piece examining Dan Warthen’s strategy for Johan Santana to throw more inside fastballs the first time through the order and then change it up subsequently.
  • Daily News – David Wright was involved, at some point, with the financial advisers that are being sued by Cliff Floyd and Rondell White over a failed real estate deal. The article says Wright isn’t involved in the lawsuit.
  • Fangraphs – R.J. Anderson writes about the odd moves that Jerry Manuel has been making recently, and the fact that this is the kind of thing that could cost him his job.

Poll: Johan Santana- Cause For Concern?

It was very disconcerting to see Johan Santana get crushed in Philly for 10 runs last night. The Mets ace having nothing against their biggest rival on national TV was a big surprise to me. I’m sure it was for you too.

This has to raise the question: are you concerned about this or was it a one-time event? Answer the poll below embedded in the post.

Phillies 11 – Mets 5 May 2, 2010

Mets starting pitcher Santana delivers a pitch to the Phillies during their National League MLB game in Philadelphia

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets and, more so, Johan Santana got absolutely torched by the Phillies in the final game of their 3-game series. Santana gave up 10 runs in 3.2 IP including four home runs, one of those a grand slam to Shane Victorino. It was really ugly tonight for the Mets.

The Mets did have some offense against Jamie Moyer. David Wright had a big 3-run homer in the first inning and things were looking good. But not for long. Rod Barajas hit another homer as well. But the 5 runs the Mets put up weren’t enough to overcome the disastrous start that Santana had.

Santana looked worse than I’ve ever seen him as a Mets player. He gave up a bases loaded walk to Moyer of all things. Then Victorino hit the grand slam. It was hideous.

The Mets leave town losing two of three in Philly and a half game back in the NL East.
