Game Preview: Cardinals at Mets [Game 106] August 4, 2009

st_louis_cardinals_logoSt. Louis Cardinals (58-50 Road: 27-27) at New York Mets (50-55 Home: 29-24) 7:10pm

Joel Pineiro (9-9 2.84) vs. Johan Santana (12-8 2.96)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The Mets and Cardinals start a two-game series tonight at Citi Field. At least Santana is pitching tonight. That’s really the only reason to watch this Mets team right now. Pineiro threw a two-hit complete game shutout against the Mets in New York on June 23. And he went 8 innings giving up 2 runs for a win in St. Louis against them on April 22. He hasn’t given up more than 3 runs in a game since May. Santana pitched a good game in his last start against Colorado going 7 shutout innings and only giving up 4 hits.

Game Preview: Rockies at Mets [Game 100, 101] July 30, 2009

rockiesColorado Rockies (54-46 Road: 27-25) at New York Mets (48-51 Home: 27-20)

Jason Hammel (5-5 4.28) vs. Johan Santana (11-8 3.12) 12:10pm

Jorge De La Rosa (8-7 4.78) vs. Jon Niese (1-0 4.08) 7:10pm

TV: SNY(both games)

What to watch: We have another dual-admission double header after the rain out last night. The Mets have a chance to sweep the four game series today, which would be huge for this team. Hammel hasn’t pitched badly but he hasn’t won a game in five starts and he generally doesn’t pitch more than 6 innings. Santana is coming off a terrible start in Houston in which he gave up 5 runs and 12 hits in 6.2 innings. De La Rosa has won his last six decisions and hasn’t lost a game since June 16. Niese pitched a great game in Houston after his recall from the minors. It would be terrific if he could follow that up with another good one tonight.

Game Preview: Mets at Astros [Game 95] July 24, 2009

astrosNew York Mets (44-50 Road: 19-30)  at Houston Astros (49-46 Home: 27-23) 8:05pm

Johan Santana (11-7 2.92) vs. Mike Hampton (5-7 4.63)

TVSNY

What to watch: The Astros just swept the Cardinals and have won five of their last seven games. Former Met Hampton has been hit hard in his last two starts and lost both games. Santana has pitched three excellent games in a row. As always, the Mets need him to stop the bleeding after losing a series to the Nationals.

Game Preview: Mets at Braves [Game 90] July 18, 2009

braves logoNew York Mets (42-47 Road: 17-27)  at Atlanta Braves (45-45 Home: 23-21) 4 :10 pm

Johan Santana (10-7 3.09) vs. Kenshin Kawakami (5-6 4.26)

TV: FOX RadioWFAN

What to watch: As usual, Santana has to stop the bleeding with a great start not a good one. It seems like the Mets have been putting him in this position for a year and a half now. He was lights out against the Reds over 7 innings in his last start. We’ll see if he can do it again today. Gary Sheffield is out after leaving the game with leg cramps last night. He may be able to pinch hit today. Kawakami has been pitching well and hasn’t lost a decision since May 27. So this won’t be an easy task today.

Mets 2009 All-Stars Ready For Action

IMG_0295Three Mets are in St. Louis today for the mid-season festivities. David Wright will be starting at third base and hitting sixth in the National League lineup. Francisco Rodriguez is in the bullpen and it’ll be interesting to see where he gets into the game. In my mind, he should pitch the eighth inning. Trevor Hoffman should get the ninth, despite the fact that he was added because Jonathan Broxton couldn’t make it because of injury.

The Mets have asked Charlie Manuel, the NL manager, not to use Johan Santana unless it’s an emergency. So don’t plan on seeing Santana unless the game goes to extra innings. Santana just pitched on Saturday and threw seven innings against the Reds. I’d be thrilled if he didn’t make it into the game tonight at all for the Mets sake. He’s too important to risk in an exhibition game.

Of course, Carlos Beltran would have been starting in center field but he’s recovering from a bone bruise to his leg.

Enjoy the game tonight. I know that I will be. Sure, it’s an exhibition but the National League could sure use a win. It’s been a long time and the Mets could use home field advantage in the World Series this year. Right?

Mets 4 – Reds 0 July 11, 2009

Tonight’s game was marked by the debut of Jeff Francoeur with the Mets and Johan Santana getting back to his old form. Santana went 7 shutout innings giving up only five hit and 1 walk. He was outstanding and appears to be over whatever problems have plagued him over the last month and a half.

All of the Mets runs were scored in the first and second innings. And Francoeur chipped in with 2 RBI’s on a bloop single in the first inning down the right field line. That was one of his 2 hits on the night. Although he did have an ugly steal attempt and was picked off by the pitcher. Angel Pagan also had 2 hits including a triple and played a very nice center field tonight. Omir Santos was 3 for 4 tonight which is a nice recovery for him from a slump that had me doubting his viability as a big league hitter.

Johnny Cueto (8-5 3.45) vs. Johan Santana (9-7 3.29)

TV: WPIX  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: Cueto got rocked by the Phillies in his last start for 9 runs in .2 innings. He’s been up and down over the last month. Santana has lost four of his last five decisions. Look for Jeff Francoeur to make his Mets debut in right field tonight.
