Yankees 15 – Mets 0 June 14, 2009

The score pretty much says it all for this game. The Mets got rocked! These games will happen during the season. But Johan Santana got demolished for 9 runs in 3 innings. He pitched in the fourth inning but didn’t get an out. The Yankees scored 9 runs in that inning.

Santana has been slipping since May 16 when he gave up 4 runs in San Francisco. He hasn’t been nearly as good as he was for the first month and a half of the season. I’m hoping that he isn’t injured. But you have to wonder what the reason for the drop off in performance is.

I won’t really get into the Mets offense because there really wasn’t any. The only good thing is that Gary Sheffield is back hitting again. He went 2 for 3 today and had 2 home runs in the series against the Yankees. He’s back up to hitting .270 for the season, which is about where I’d expect him to be.

Yankees LogoNew York Mets (32-28 Road: 14-17)  at New York Yankees (35-27 Home: 19-12) 1:05 pm

Johan Santana (8-3 2.39) vs. A.J. Burnett (4-3 4.89)

TV: WPIX, YES  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Yankees play the rubber game of the series today and you have to give the edge to the Mets in the final game with Santana. Burnett got rocked for 5 runs in 2.2 innings in his last start in Boston. So far, he’s been somewhat of a disappointment since signing with the Yankees as a free agent. Santana has been on a bit of a down-tick for him lately as well. He’s allowed at least 3 earned runs in his last five starts. I have a feeling that he’s going to turn up the intensity for the Yankees today though.

Pirates 3 – Mets 1 June 2, 2009

The Mets lost their second straight to the lousy Pirates team. There just wasn’t much offense to support Johan Santana. But Zach Duke did a good job for the Pirates. Santana gave up 3 runs in 6 innings to raise his ERA to 2.00. He’s been victimized by a lack of support in most of his starts this season.

There wasn’t much offense to speak of tonight for the Mets. They only had 8 hits and three were by Jeremy Reed who was starting for Carlos Beltran again. Beltran is still too sick to play since he came out of Saturday’s game with the flu.

The only run for the Mets was scored by Ramon Martinez in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Luis Castillo. While sliding into home Martinez dislocated his pinky finger. He’s heading back to New York to get it looked at as the walking wounded total continues to increase.

Mets 7 – Nationals 4 May 27, 2009

The Mets complete the 3-game sweep of the Nationals tonight that was an interesting game in several aspects. First, Johan Santana was struggling through 6 innings giving up 3 runs. Although he was struggling, he did have 11 strikeouts. But he also had 6 walks and gave up 3 hits. It wasn’t vintage Santana but it was enough to get the win and raise his record to 7-2.

Another interesting aspect of the game was Daniel Murphy at the plate. He was 3-for-4 with a homer a double and 5 RBI’s. The home run in the sixth inning appeared to go off the Subway sign that overhangs right field. Initially, the umpires called the ball in play and Gary Sheffield was thrown out at the plate. But the play was reviewed and the umpires called it a home run off the Subway sign. It was really hard to tell from the replays. I’d be curious to know what they saw in their replays.

Sheffield was 1-for-2 with 2 walks and a key 2-run double in the first inning. Luis Castillo was 2-for-2 with 3 walks as well. It was a good offensive night except for David Wright going 1-for-5 with 4 strikeouts.

The Mets move back into first place with a Phillies loss tonight after completing the sweep of the sad Nationals team.

Jordan Zimmermann (2-1 5.71) vs. Johan Santana (6-2 1.50)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets go for the sweep tonight behind ace Santana. He’s been astounding this season and expect him to put the hammer down on a poor Nationals team. Zimmermann is a good looking young pitcher that appears to have a bright future. He beat the Mets at Citi Field on April 26. Since then he hasn’t been that great but don’t discount him, he’s got some talent.

Mets 5 – Red Sox 3 May 22, 2009

I didn’t get to see the whole game. I had to watch the speed version on TiVo. The Mets offense was pretty consistent and the defense was consistently bad. Three more errors in the field. And it’s hard to believe that the Mets could win a game in which they commit three errors. That’s lucky.

Johan Santana was great… again. He was in trouble a couple of times but got out of it without any major damage. He ended up going 7 innings and giving up 2 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk.

Ramon Martinez had 2 more errors at shortstop. I like him as a role player, he gets some timely hits including an RBI single in the fourth. But he just can’t pick it at short. He’s way over his head.

Johan Santana (5-2 1.36) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-1 12.79)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Red Sox come into the series having swept the hot Blue Jays at home. The Mets have lost four in a row and just got swept in LA. Matsuzaka is just coming off the DL after suffering from a stiff shoulder (and bad pitching). Santana wasn’t his usual self against the Giants in his last start but still got the win.
