http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsFrancisco Rodriguez was arrested after last night’s loss to the Rockies at Citi Field. He was involved in a physical altercation with his father-in-law, who was injured. According to multiple media reports, K-Rod was arrested and being held at Citi Field.

This isn’t the first dust up for K-Rod since he joined the Mets last season. But it is the first time it’s gotten physical. In May, he and bullpen coach Randy Niemann had some sort of disagreement in the bullpen. My take on it was that K-Rod was complaining about having to warm and never enter games and Niemann told him to pipe down.

It’s just another situation making this disappointing season worse and worse. Johan Santana was accused by a woman in Florida of raping her. He wasn’t charged by the police but she’s suing him now in civil court.

The only thing I will say is that sometimes the best players have an edge to them that you don’t always like. The Mets of the ’80’s weren’t choir boys. We all know that. Not that K-Rod has been a great player, but sometimes you have to live with edgy behavior from players.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got a big game out of Johan Santana and they really needed it. Santana didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning and ended up throwing 7.1 shutout innings. It was a nice comeback from two below-par starts. Cole Hamels was almost as good, only giving up 1 run in 7 innings. It was a classic pitchers duel.

The Mets offense was still sleeping with only 7 hits and 2 walks in the game. The Mets only run was on a solo shot by Jeff Francoeur in the seventh inning.

Ruben Tejada took over second base and made several outstanding plays in the field. Fernando Martinez also got into the game in right field late in the game.

The Mets and Phillies will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon.

What to watch: It’s only August, but games like this are starting to be “must-win” games for the Mets or their season will be finished soon. The Phillies have won the last five games that Hamels started but he’s been hit at times giving up 7 runs over his last two starts. The Mets have lost the last two games Santana started. He got rocked by the Cards for 7 runs then gave up 4 to the Braves in losses.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Braves picked up 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning off Johan Santana and the game was over. The Mets defense didn’t help Santana out with some sloppy play in the field which we’re becoming accustomed to after the most recent home stand. The Mets didn’t have any errors, but they weren’t hustling in the field and allowed Braves runners to take extra bases.

The Mets offense wasn’t terrible with 8 hits and 3 walks. But they left 10 runners on base and couldn’t get any timely hitting. The only run scored was a Carlos Beltran RBI double in the fifth.

The Mets continue their downward trend. It’s starting to become eerily reminiscent of 2009 watching this team.

Johan Santana (8-5 3.11) vs Tim Hudson (11-5 2.40)

TV: ESPN   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Braves have lost their last three series’. But they aren’t playing as poorly as the Mets by any stretch of the imagination. Hudson has been pitching pretty well. He’s won three of his last four starts. Santana got rocked in his last start by the Cardinals giving up 7 runs over 5.2 IP.

Cardinals 8 – Mets 7 July 28, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIt took a great comeback to get into the game but the Mets ended up losing it in 13 innings. Johan Santana had one of the worst starts of his career giving up 6 runs on 8 hits… In the first inning! He gathered himself to go 5.2 innings but the damage was severe.

The Mets bullpen did a great job including Francisco Rodriguez throwing 2 scoreless innings. He did have a little trouble, as usual, giving up a hit and a walk but managed to work out of it.

The Mets offense was pretty solid with 13 hits and 5 walks in the game. Jose Reyes and David Wright had 3 hits apiece. Angel Pagan and Carlos Beltran both had home runs in the nice comeback. Ike Davis had a big 2 RBI pinch hit in the eighth inning that tied the game and would eventually send it to extras.

Pedro Feliciano gave it up to Albert Pujols in the 13th to lose it. That’s a terrible match up for Feliciano but they didn’t have much choice left in the bullpen. Oliver Perez was about all they had left and that’s a bad match up against anyone.

The Mets and Cardinals are even at 1 apiece in the series. They’ll play an early one at noon tomorrow in the rubber game.

Jaime Garcia (9-4 2.21) vs Johan Santana (8-5 2.79)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets would be in great shape if they never had to leave Citi Field. They’re 31-16 at home now. Let’s hope that home cooking continues tonight. Santana is 6-3 with a 2.81 ERA at home this year. Garcia hasn’t pitched as well on the road as he does at home (.248 BAA vs. .221 at home). But he did pitch a nice game against the Phillies in his last start going 7 innings and only allowing 1 run.
