On Deck: July 5- Mets At Phillies (Game 2)

New York Mets (42-44 Road: 20-26) at Philadelphia Phillies (48-39 Home: 23-18) 7:05pm

John Maine (8-6 3.86) vs. Jamie Moyer (7-6 4.13)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: After last night’s abysmal loss, the Mets absolutely need to win this one. Maine was really bad in his last start in St. Louis and said his arm felt dead. It would be a huge problem for the Mets if he struggled again tonight. Moyer has lost his last three starts despite not pitching too badly. He’s even gone six innings or more in six of his last ten starts. Not bad for a 45 year old who was drafted in the sixth round of the 1984 draft.

Maine, Mets Flat In Loss To Cards 7-1

Video Highlights

John Maine didn’t have it tonight and the defense behind him didn’t help. The Mets played poorly in every facet of the game including the continuing saga of trying to find some offensive punch on a consistent basis.

Maine pitched only four innings giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks. He was in trouble from the first batter of the game when he walked Cardinals leadoff hitter Skip Schumaker.

Maine also had a throwing error on a pickoff play. Luis Castillo had a ball go right through the wickets and David Wright had a throwing error on a hit down the line that he never should have attempted to throw.

Endy Chavez was the only Met with multiple hits tonight. The only Mets run scored when Andy Phillips scored on a throwing error by Rick Ankiel over throwing third base and Kyle Lohse didn’t back up the play.

On Deck: June 30- Mets At Cardinals

New York Mets (40-41 Road: 18-23) at St. Louis Cardinals (47-36 Home: 23-17)  7:05pm

John Maine (8-5 3.73) vs. Kyle Lohse (9-2 3.94)

TV: ESPN, SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets roll into St. Louis as a mediocre team at the halfway point of the season. The Cards haven’t been playing that well lately either. Two weeks ago they got swept by the Royals and since have gone 5-4. They just got Pujols back so that won’t help the Mets but it should be a good four game series in steamy St. Louis.

Wright’s 2 HR Leads Mets Over Mariners 8-2

David Wright appeared to make the most of his day off yesterday. He hit two home runs in his first two at-bats to put the game out of reach early. Jose Reyes chipped in with a three run homer of his own in the third inning. From there the Mets cruised to a win.

John Maine was solid but not spectacular tonight going six innings giving up two runs on five hits and two walks. He also had three strikeouts. The bullpen worked three clean innings giving up only one hit.

The Mets avoid a sweep at the hands of the lowly Mariners tonight before beginning a series with the Yankees on Friday.

On Deck: June 25- Mariners At Mets

Seattle Mariners (28-49 Road: 13-25) at New York Mets (37-39 Home: 20-16)  7:10pm

Miguel Batista (3-9 6.26) vs. John Maine (7-5 3.78)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid a home sweep at the hands of the worst team in baseball. Incredible! Maine had a good start in Colorado last Friday. Let’s hope that he can keep it going. I haven’t seen any suspensions announced from MLB yet for Jerry Manuel and Carlos Beltran. We’ll have to keep an eye on that.

Delgado, Nixon Homer As Mets Top Rockies 7-2

image The Mets got what they wanted out of John Maine. He went deeper into the game on fewer pitches and improved his record to 7-5. His line was: image

Pedro Feliciano, Joe Smith, and Aaron Heilman worked clean through the last 2.1 innings of the game.

Carlos Delgado hit his 11th home run off Aaron Cook in the Mets five run second inning. Trot Nixon also hit his first home run as a Met. Carlos Beltran was hitting screaming line drives all over the field tonight in a 3.for 5 effort.

The Mets absolutely look like they had an extra spring in their step tonight. It looks like the momentum from the 10th inning win in Los Angeles on Wednesday carried over to tonight’s game.
