Game Preview: Marlins at Mets [Game 49] May 31, 2009

marlins-logo2Florida Marlins (23-27 Road: 14-13) at New York Mets (27-21 Home: 16-9) 1:10 pm

Chris Volstad (4-3 3.69) vs.  John Maine  (4-3 4.18)

TV: WPIX  Radio:  WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Marlins play the rubber of the series today before the Mets head out of town to Pittsburgh. Volstad has been very consistent this season, he never gets completely bombed in a game. Maine on the other hand has had his up’s and down’s over the past season and a half. He really hasn’t been as consistent as I would have expected of him. Good news for the fans going out to the game today is that you’ll probably see a much better lineup from the Mets than we got yesterday. Expect David Wright back in there and we’ll find out if Carlos Beltran has recovered from the stomach virus that took him out of yesterday’s game.

Game Preview: Nationals at Mets [Game 44] May 25, 2009

washington-nationals-logoWashington Nationals (13-30 Road: 6-14) at New York Mets (23-20 Home: 12-8) 7:10 pm

John Lannan (2-3 3.63) vs. John Maine (3-3 4.53)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Nationals come to town after losing 10 of their last 12 games. Ugly. Lannan has pitched really well though. He’s only been rocked twice in his nine starts. Maine is coming off a loss in his last start in LA but had been pitching well prior to that. The Mets could really use some healthy players, especially Jose Reyes and Ryan Church as quickly as possible.

Dodgers 5 – Mets 3 May 19, 2009

John Maine was having a good start but Jerry Manuel left him in the game for one batter too many. Casey Blake hit a three run homer in the sixth to send the Mets to their third straight loss.

It looked like it was going to be another disasterous night when Daniel Murphy singled in the first inning and attempted a steal before Chad Billingsley even moved. Murphy was easily picked off by Billingsley in a bizzare play. In the bottom of the first Murphy muffed a fly ball hit right to him in left field by Juan Pierre. And Pierre would come around to score on a single by Orlando Hudson.

There just wasn’t much offense by the Mets garnering only 6 hits tonight. The Mets and Dodgers finish their series in Los Angeles tomorrow night.

dodgers-logoNew York Mets (21-17 Road: 9-9) at Los Angeles Dodgers (27-13 Home: 15-3) 10:10 pm

John Maine (3-2 4.24) vs. Chad Billingsley (5-1 2.30)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch: It’ll be very interesting to see how the Mets respond tonight to the horror show of a game they had last night. Hopefully, Jose Reyes will finally be able to play after missing the last five games with a calf injury. I don’t expect to see Ryan Church in the lineup tonight after missing third base while attempting to score the winning run last night. Maine’s last four starts have been excellent. Billingsley has been great all season, even his loss was a well-pitched game. This could be another good pitching match up.

Mets 7 – Giants 4 May 14, 2009

I was a little worried when I saw that Jose Reyes wasn’t going to play in this game because of some pain in his right calf. Alex Cora started at short for him and didn’t look great at shortstop, including a throwing error. But the Mets looked fired up in this game which was a surprise coming off an extra inning game and a cross country flight.

John Maine worked his way out of trouble a few times to go 6.2 innings and only giving up 2 runs. But Bobby Parnell was pretty bad in the eighth inning giving up 2 runs and the lead, allowing the Giants to tie the game.

The Mets offense was really NYGoodHealth clicking with 12 hits and 6 walks in the game. But the big story on offense was the Mets stealing seven bases in the game including four by David Wright. You normally don’t see many steals against any of the Molina’s.

The Mets scored 3 runs in the ninth to win it. The inning was tremendous including a critical steal of third by Carlos Beltran. Wright had a great slide at home to avoid the tag by Molina. And even Gary Sheffield got into the action stealing third in the inning. The old man can still run.

It was a fantastic comeback win and a great way to start the long road trip.

giants-logoNew York Mets (18-15 Road: 6-7) at San Francisco Giants (18-15 Home: 12-5) 10:15 pm

John Maine (3-2 4.54) vs. Jonathan Sanchez (1-3 4.78)

TV: SNY  RadioWFAN

What to watch:  The Giants have won 5 of their last 7 games and are playing some good baseball right now. Sanchez, however, hasn’t won a game since April 17th. He’s a good young pitcher but is still a bit raw. Maine has won three starts in a row and is pitching as well as I’ve seen him since early last season. Get ready for some late night baseball.
