Marlins 10 – Mets 8 May 16, 2010

New York Mets at Cincinnati Reds

Jon Niese started the game and wasn’t very sharp for the second start in a row. He left the game due to injury after fielding a ground ball. It looked like it might have been the same hamstring that ruined his season last year. He ended up going 2 IP and giving up 2 ER.

Hisanori Takahashi relived Niese and went 3 IP, which precludes his from taking Oliver Perez’ spot in the rotation. The Mets will have to dip into Triple-A Buffalo to replace Perez.

Fernando Nieve got rocked in the seventh inning for 3 ER on 2 hits a 1 walk. His ERA is up to 4.64 as he’s cooled off quite a bit from his hot start in the bullpen.

The defense was pretty sloppy in this one too. David Wright and Niese both had errors. But Wright had several plays that he didn’t make at third that were scored as hits by the Florida scorekeeper.

The Mets did have 12 hits and 4 walks in the game. The lineup featured Chris Carter hitting cleanup and playing right field. Jeff Francoeur got a “mental health” day off but he did end up pinch hitting. The big shock is that Gary Matthews, Jr. went into right field and went 2 for 2 with his first RBI of the year.

The Mets head to Atlanta for a two game series starting tomorrow night.

Preview: Mets at Marlins May 16, 2010

New York Mets (18-19) at Florida Marlins (19-18)  1:10 pm

Jon Niese (1-1 4.52) vs Ricky Nolasco (3-2 3.66)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are trying to avoid being swept this afternoon. The Mets have won four of the last five games that Niese started. Although his last start against the Nationals was the worst of the season giving up 6 ER in 4.1 IP. Nolasco and the Marlins beat the Mets on April 7 when he went 6.2 IP and gave up 3 ER in a 7-6 win.

Mets 8 – Nationals 6 May 11, 2010

MLB: Dodgerss vs Mets APR 27

It started poorly giving up a 3-run homer in the first inning and got bad again in the fifth inning. Niese only lasted 4.1 IP and gave up 6 ER’s. He was lucky to avoid the loss. We’ll talk about that in a minute.

Hisanori Takahashi did it again with 2 scoreless innings of relief. How good has he been? His ERA in down to 2.78, crazy good for a long reliever.

There wasn’t much offense to talk about before the eighth inning. Jeff Francoeur knocked in a couple runs in the second and the sixth but that was it. The Mets exploded in the eighth though for 6 runs. It could have been more because Ike Davis barely missed a grand slam that was just foul of the right field pole. Preview: Nationals at Mets May 11, 20101

Washington Nationals (18-14) at New York Mets (17-15)   7:10 pm

Scott Olsen (2-1 3.54) vs Jon Niese (1-1 3.60)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Olsen is pitching really well right now. He’s only given up 1 ER in his last three starts covering 20.1 IP. Niese has been consistent this season. He did give up 4 ER in 6 IP in his last start in Cincinnati. The Mets need to win the next two games to avoid losing another home series to the Nats.

Reds 5 – Mets 4 May 5, 2010

New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathan Niese throws against the Colorado Rockies in their MLB baseball game in Denver

The bottom line is the Mets lost the second game in the series on a walk off home run in extras. Today Orlando Cabrera hit one off Pedro Feliciano in the tenth inning.

Jon Niese had a decent line: 6 IP and 4 ER. That’s not terrible but he had traffic on the bases in almost every inning. He gave up 12 hits in those 6 innings. Not good.

Angel Pagan and David Wright both had nice games at the plate. Pagan was 3 for 4 with a SB and 1 run scored. Wright was 2 for 5 with a solo homer, his 7th of the season.

The Mets finish their road trip at 2-4 and come home to play the Giants this weekend.

Preview: Mets at Reds May 5, 2010

New York Mets (15-12)  at Cincinnati Reds (13-14) 12:35 pm

Jon Niese (1-1 3.10) vs. Johnny Cueto (1-1 5.33)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Reds play the rubber game of the series early tomorrow afternoon. Niese is coming off three excellent starts in a row, only giving up 2 ER in his last 20 IP. The Mets have won all three games. Cueto has been up and down for the Reds this season. He has good stuff but his WHIP is at 1.52 so far this year. He’s had way too many runners on base against him.

Mets 9 – Phillies 1 April 30, 2010

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets put the beat down on the Phillies tonight led by an outstanding start from Jon Niese and two homers by Rod Barajas. Niese was in complete control through 7 IP, helped by having a lead from the second inning on. The Mets win their eighth straight game in a route. The best way to win one in Philly.

The offense really came alive in the bandbox Citizens Bank Ballpark. The Mets had 10 hits including four homers, the two by Barajas plus David Wright and Jeff Francoeur had one each.  And Angel Pagan was 3 for 5 with a triple and two RBI’s.

Francoeur was hit by a pitch pretty badly on the left elbow in the seventh inning. He ran the bases, and even scored, but had to leave the game. X-rays were negative though. I was disappointed that Niese didn’t go for payback in the bottom of the inning. Jenry Mejia did hit Chase Utley in the eighth but it was a breaking ball. Clearly, he wasn’t trying to hit him.

Overall, it was an excellent game. There were some great plays in the outfield including two by Francoeur and one at the wall by Jason Bay. The Mets are really firing on all cylinders right now. It’s exciting to watch again.
