Viggo Mortensen on 2015 Mets

viggo mortensenThe Post got Viggo Mortensen to write a preview of the 2015 Mets. It’s pretty good except for the minor error to mention EY Jr. as a part of the team. He signed a minor league deal with the Braves this week. But otherwise, it’s a pretty solid fan piece.

Mortensen wrote about Matt Harvey and the other pitchers “…Add rookie sensation de Grom, plus rock-solid Colón, Wheeler, Gee, Niese, Torres, Mejia, Familia, Montero, Edgin, Black, Syndergaard… could be an intimidating pitching staff. Don’t count Parnell out either; he could come back with a vengeance as a closer. Sorry if I am leaving anyone out. Bottom line is that the Mets have a lot of talented young pitchers.” I give Mortensen an “A” for effort and optimism.

Video: Matt Harvey Hit Hard by Charlotte

Last night in Buffalo Matt Harvey got hit hard by the Charlotte Knights in a 11-0 loss. Harvey gave up 6 runs in only 5 innings on 7 hits and 2 walks, although he did have 6 K’s. He threw 96 pitches, 61 for strikes. It’s a disappointing start for Harvey in his second audition for a spot in the Mets rotation after Miguel Batista was shellacked by the Dodgers yesterday.

Since there aren’t many Major League highlights to watch from the Mets right now, I thought that I would switch gears to show you what the future of the Mets looks like. Here’s some video of Binghamton Mets pitcher Matt Harvey throwing 7 scoreless innings last night against the Erie SeaWolves.

So far this season, Harvey is 4-3 with a 4.35 ERA in 10 starts at Binghamton. He was the Mets first round draft choice in the 2010 draft.

Mets 2011 Top Prospects

I was reading through some posts about the Mets top prospects and thinking about who might make an impact at the Major League level in 2011. Baseball America compiled a solid list of the top ten in the organization back in mid-December:

  1. Jenrry Mejia, rhp
  2. Wilmer Flores, ss
  3. Cesar Puello, of
  4. Matt Harvey, rhp
  5. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, of
  6. Reese Havens, 2b
  7. Lucas Duda, of/1b
  8. Fernando Martinez, of
  9. Aderlin Rodriguez, 3b
  10. Brad Holt, rhp

For Mets fans, these are mostly familiar names. We’ve already seen plenty of Mejia, Duda, and F-Mart with the Mets. Bryan Smith of FanGraphs lists Flores and Harvey as the two “must follow” prospects in the Mets system. Smith doesn’t go as deep as the Baseball America post but he does go into more detail about Flores and the lofty comparisons that have been made to Miguel Cabrera.

As far as impact in the majors this year, I think we’ll see Mejia at some point during the season again. The Mets rotation looks very questionable with Chris Young and Chris Capuano working as reclamation projects. I don’t think anyone would be surprised if one or both went down with an injury for the season. F-Mart could get another shot with the Mets too if he can stay healthy and Carlos Beltran is injured or traded during the season.

Matt Harvey – Mets 2010 Draft First Round

The Mets selected RHP Matt Harvey with the seventh pick in the first round of the 2010 MLB draft. Most projections had him ranked around the 20th best player in the draft. But a lot of the baseball draft is based not only on skill but the ability to sign the player. Harvey went to high school in Groton, CT and attended the University of North Carolina.

Harvey was drafted out of high school in the third round (118) by the Angels but never signed. He had a poor sophomore season at UNC but bounced back this season. He’s got a high 90’s fastball but struggled with control and was worked very hard at UNC including a 156 pitch start this year.
