Pre-Game: Mets at D-Backs Aug. 10, 2009

Mike Pelfrey (8-7 4.75) vs. Doug Davis (6-10 3.67)

TV: SNY

What to watch: The D-Backs just got swept in Washington. The Mets are catching the D-Backs with Justin Upton on the DL with a strained quadriceps. The D-Backs have won the last three games that Davis started including a 3-2 win over the Mets on July 31. Pelfrey is making his first start back with the team after his son was born. The Mets have lost three of the last four games that Pelfrey started.

Mets Recall Elmer Dessens

To replace Jon Niese on the roster, the Mets have recalled Elmer Dessens from Triple-A Buffalo. Dessens last pitched for the Mets on July 19 before being designated for assignment. He then accepted an assignment to Buffalo.

He’s pitched in 9 games this season with the Mets to a 3.65 ERA. In 12.1 innings he’s given up 5 earned runs.

Expect Dessens to get the long man job with Tim Redding getting a spot start replacing Mike Pelfrey on Saturday in San Diego.

The Mets announced today that Mike Pelfrey left the team yesterday for his home in Kansas for the birth of his first child. Between this news and the season ending injury to Jon Niese, this really puts the Mets in a bind for starting pitching.

Pelfrey was scheduled to start against the Padres in San Diego on Saturday. With Nelson Figueroa pitching 4.1 innings yesterday, Tim Redding will probably get a start against the Padres.

Redding’s last start was July 2 against the Pirates when he gave up 5 runs in 2.1 innings, then lost his spot in the rotation.

The Mets were victimized by a very solid complete game by Jon Garland. I won’t dwell the fact that the Mets should have signed Garland in the offseason instead of Oliver Perez. Garland only gave up 7 hits and 2 runs, but this is the Mets weak offense that he did it against.

Mike Pelfrey struggled through 5 innings  giving up 3 runs on 107 pitches.

Gary Sheffield made his return to the lineup as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth and stayed in to play left field. He told reporters that he wasn’t thrilled about not starting today, and this is after he wasn’t thrilled about going on the disabled list in the first place.

The Mets are in a bad spot now after losing two of the first three games to the D-Backs. Tomorrow night they go up against Dan Haren. Bad news.

What to watch: This is the third of a four game series. Garland hasn’t won a game in almost a month but has pitched pretty well. He hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in a start since June 25. Pelfrey is 1-1 in his last two starts but he’s pitched 13.1 innings and allowed only 3 runs.

Mets 4 – Rockies 0 July 28, 2009

The Mets won their fourth game in a row and moved to 5.5 games behind the Rockies in the wild card race. Mike Pelfrey had a second straight solid start going 6.1 shutout innings. Hopefully, this is the beginning of some consistency from him.

Daniel Murphy, David Wright, and Alex Cora had two hits apiece tonight to lead the attack. Jeff Francoeur had a single and another RBI. But he also got hit on the hand that looked like it swelled up immediately. I would think that the Mets crack medical staff is looking at that tonight. I hope they know how to use the x-ray machine so they can check for some broken bones.

I’ll be at the game tomorrow night so my post-game wrap up will be a little late.
