Game Preview: Rockies at Mets [Game 99] July 28, 2009

rockiesColorado Rockies (54-45 Road: 27-24) at New York Mets (47-51 Home: 26-20)   7:10pm

Jason Marquis (12-6 3.49) vs. Mike Pelfrey (7-6 4.99)

TV: SNY

What to watch: Marquis has had an unbelievable season so far. He’s 3-1 in his last four games, including going at least 8 innings in three of those starts. Pelfrey is 1-3 in his last four starts including two terrible stinkers. He needs to start showing us something before this season ends up being a failure for him.

Nationals 3 – Mets 1 July 22, 2009

The Mets look horrible right now. The game was preceded by Omar Minaya saying that the Mets are investigating bad behavior and poor judgment by Tony Bernazard.  Then the Mets go on to lose the game and the series to the lowly Nationals.

Mike Pelfrey recovered from his disasterous start in Atlanta to pitch a good game. He went 7 innings giving up only 3 runs.

Luis Castillo was ejected from the game for arguing a call at second base in the second inning. He bobbled the ball on a force out throw from David Wright. The ejection was very quick, so he must have said the magic word to the umpire.

As usual, the Mets had no offense. They only managed 4 hits in the game. The lineup they’re putting out there everyday now is so weak that they may end up falling below the Nationals in the standings before this season is over.

TVSNY RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Nationals play the rubber game of the series tonight. Pelfrey is coming off getting bombed by the Braves for 9 runs in 4.1 innings in his last start. Stammen has pitched well in his last three starts and hasn’t given up more than 3 runs in any of them. He also pitched a complete game win in Houston on July 11. So this won’t be a cake walk for the Mets, not that any games ever are anymore.

Braves 11 – Mets 0 July 17, 2009

The Mets suffered a brutal and embarrassing defeat in Atlanta tonight. Watching this game it felt as if the season was disappearing before my eyes. Mike Pelfrey was absolutely putrid tonight giving up 9 runs in 4.1 innings. Once Pelfrey gave up 3 runs in the first inning, the game was all but over. The Mets don’t have the offense to overcome an early deficit like that.

Speaking of the Mets offense, they managed 2 hits and 3 walks in the entire game. Gary Sheffield left the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after chasing down a fly ball. He appeared to have a hamstring problem. But it was later diagnosed as just a cramp.

The Mets get beaten down in their first two games out of the All-Star break. The second half of the season is getting ugly.

Mike Pelfrey (7-4 4.47) vs. Jair Jurrjens (7-7 2.91)

TV: WPIX RadioWFAN

What to watch: Pelfrey’s last start against the Reds was very good going 7 innings and giving up 3 runs. But he’s been up and down going 2-2 in his last four starts. Jurrjens is a tough luck 2-2 in his last four starts as well. But he only gave up 9 runs over 27 innings in those games. The Braves will retire Greg Maddux‘ number 31 prior to the game. At least the Braves show some respect to their great former players. I hope the Mets front office is watching the ceremony. They could learn something about how to run a top-flight franchise.

Mets 9 – Reds 7 July 12, 2009

Surprisingly, it was the Mets offense that came up big today with 16 hits and 2 walks including two home runs. Luis Castillo led the charge going 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored. Gary Sheffield was supposed to have the day off, but played and had a terrific offensive game going 2 for 5 with 3 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. The big difference in the game was in the seventh inning Brian Schneider hit a solo homer off the porch in right. Then Fernando Tatis hit a pinch hit solo homer to left, both homers were off former Met David Weathers.

Mike Pelfrey rebounded to have a nice start going 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. Pelfrey gave up all 3 runs in the fifth inning and still appears to get out of sorts with runners on base. He balked again today in the fifth. Jerry Manuel let him work his way out of trouble to the tune of 115 pitches in the game.

Sean Green was horrible in the eighth inning giving up 3 straight hits without getting an out. All of the runners would come around to score in the frame. Francisco Rodriguez was shaky again in the ninth giving up a run on 1 hit and 1 walk. But he got the job done.

The Mets take two out of three from the Reds heading into the All-Star break.

Game Preview: Reds at Mets [Game 87] July 12, 2009

RedsCincinnati Reds (42-44 Road: 22-24) at New York Mets (41-45 Home: 24-20)  1:10 pm

Aaron Harang (5-8 3.89) vs. Mike Pelfrey (6-4 4.52)

TV: SNY RadioWFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Reds play the rubber game of the series this afternoon at Citi Field. It’s also the last game before the All-Star break for both teams. Harang hasn’t won a decision since May 25, if you can believe that! Pelfrey has been extremely inconsistent this season. He needs to figure out how to put together a decent game every five days. The Mets can’t have him getting blown up in every other start.
