Pedro’s Bullpen The Story Of The Game

Pedro Martinez waves goodbye after signing som...Image via Wikipedia

The biggest story of the Mets game wasn’t the game. It was Pedro Martinez throwing a bullpen session during the game. He’s trying to recover from hip, groin, and shoulder pain and had a cortisone shot in his hip just days ago.

Last night the word came from Jerry Manuel after the game that Pedro won’t pitch against the Phillies this week. The plan is for him to pitch in next weekend’s series against the Cardinals. Pedro did feel good after throwing last night though, the first time he’s thrown since his last start on July 12th.

“OK, for the time being,” Martinez said. “I’d say it’s a positive day. We’re going to see how it feels tomorrow.”

He’s pitched so poorly this season (3-2 6.25 ERA) and missed so much time with injuries that it’s really been a wasted season for Pedro. Unfortunately, this is the last season he’s under contract with the Mets. So his pre-season comments about proving his health and ability to gain another deal with the Mets is seriously in question.

It would take a big run by Pedro in the last two months of the season to warrant the Mets offering Pedro a contract beyond the end of this year. He’s a definite Hall of Famer but he’s been hurting the Mets for more than two years now.

Mets Injury Updates: Pedro, Pagan, El Duque, Church

It’s a good thing that the Mets are playing so well right now because the injury news isn’t very good.

  • El Duque- He left his start in Binghamton after one inning because of some pain in his foot. It’s the same foot that’s been bothering him because of a bunion and toe ligament problem.
  • Angel Pagan- He had pain in his left shoulder during a game in Brooklyn. That’s the shoulder that he injured in May in Los Angeles.
  • Pedro Martinez- He got a cortisone shot in his hip and will have his next start pushed back. Mike Pelfrey will move up to take his start. So Pedro should start on Tuesday.
  • Ryan Church- He wants to come off the disabled list on Tuesday when he’s eligible. But Jerry Manuel told reporters that the team will be cautious and Church probably won’t be back that quickly.

Mets Take 9 Game Win Streak Into Second Half

PHOENIX, AZ - May 6: Mike Pelfrey #34 of the ...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

The Mets go into the traditional second half of the season tonight with a nine game winning streak, confidence, and swagger. The last two weeks have seen Mike Pelfrey dominate all competition like the next coming of Roy Halladay. His recent performances have symbolized the Mets turnaround from the most lifeless team that money could buy to a team of united players that are achieving, if not exceeding, their potential.

As the Mets series in Cincinnati begins tonight, there will still be questions about Ryan Church’s foggy head, Carlos Delgado’s resurgent bat, Pedro Martinez’ ability to stabilize his spot in the rotation, and Billy Wagner’s ability to close “the big game”, and the crater in left field that Moises Alou left behind.

But there won’t be questions about the Mets desire to win and intestinal fortitude. There were plenty of those questions during the first two months of this season. That has miraculously changed under the direction of manager Jerry Manuel and pitching coach Dan Warthen.

It’s difficult to quantify how much the managerial and coaching changes have changed the Mets. I haven’t seen Dan Warthen throwing seven shutout innings but I have seen that from Oliver Perez and Pelfrey. I haven’t seen Jerry Manuel have a 9 RBI game but I did see that from Delgado. But something clearly changed on this team when the manager/coaching purge occurred. The Met took a little time to stabilize… Then caught fire!!!

The biggest change for me, as a fan, is that I like watching this team over the last month. I didn’t for the first two months of the season. It wasn’t fun or enjoyable. I understand that the Mets winning streak won’t carry into September, that’s not what I’m talking about. What I like about this team is their resiliency, their ability to mount a comeback, and the appearance that they want to win as badly as I want them to. That’s the kind of team that I’ll pay to watch.

Great Eight- Mets Over Rockies Again 3-0

Video Highlights

The Mets are on fire! They won their eighth in a row today behind astounding three hit pitching by five pitchers. Pedro Martinez started the game but left after four innings giving up only one hit due to injury. There’s some confusion about exactly what the nature of the injury is. Some reports state the he left because of a stiff shoulder, which appeared to be the case by his attempts to loosen the shoulder on the mound. Manager Jerry Manuel said that Pedro suffered a groin/hip strain running the bases in a prior start. I’m sure we’ll hear more in coming days, but the injury doesn’t appear to be serious.

The offense came from Fernando Tatis (again) with an RBI single in the fourth inning scoring Carlos Beltran. Beltran doubled, stole third, then scored on Tatis’ single. Tatis is constantly in the thick of the Mets scoring innings.

Jose Reyes hit a solo homer in the fifth off the scoreboard in right-center. Brian Schneider hit an RBI double in the sixth to score Carlos Delgado.

The Mets move to .5 game behind the Phillies after the D-Backs beat the Phils 10-4. The Mets could take over first place by the end of the day tomorrow.

On Deck: July 12- Rockies At Mets Game 2

Colorado Rockies (39-55 Road: 14-34) at New York Mets (49-44 Home: 26-18) 3:55pm

Ubaldo Jimenez (4-8 4.21) vs. Pedro Martinez (3-2 6.86)

TV: Fox  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets try to extend their winning streak to eight games on national TV this afternoon. Pedro had a pretty good start on Monday in Philadelphia, it was probably his best of the season so far. Pedro has really been the one starter that hasn’t lifted his game significantly over the last three weeks. Jimenez completely dominated the Mets on June 21 going eight innings and giving up only one run.

Manuel Ejected As Mets Beat Phils 10-9

Video Highlights

The Mets had a 10-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning and the bullpen did the best they could to give the game up. Jerry Manuel was ejected for arguing a disputed home run call in the seventh inning. But the Mets end up taking three of four games from the Phillies on the road for a huge win. They also go over .500 for the first time in more than a month.

Pedro Martinez pitched pretty well tonight which was a nice change from his previous three starts. He ended up going 5.1 innings giving up two runs. He threw 105 pitches though, way too many for five innings. He still needs to get sharper.

David Wright was the offensive star going 2 for 5 with 4 RBI’s and his 17th home run. Damion Easley, Endy Chavez, and Fernando Tatis had three hits apiece. Interesting that these bench guys are going hard for more playing time. Jerry Manuel’s “reward system” is definitely having an impact on the team.

Tony Armas, Aaron Heilman, and Billy Wagner were all giving up runs at an alarming rate after Pedro left the game. Notably Wagner had his second shaky outing in a row. He needs to get his game together. He already has six blown saves and almost added another tonight.

On Deck: July 7- Mets At Phillies (Game 4)

New York Mets (44-44 Road: 22-26) at Philadelphia Phillies (48-41 Home: 23-20) 7:05pm

Pedro Martinez (2-2 7.39) vs. Adam Eaton (3-6 4.79)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets are coming off a huge 12th inning homer for the win by Fernando Tatis. Look for Tatis to be in the starting lineup tonight. Pedro has been really bad since coming back from the disabled list. He needs to be on his game if the Mets are going anywhere this year. Eaton is 1-3 in his last four games. But the only game that he really got bombed in was on June 20th against the Los Angeles Angels.
