Giants 2 – Mets 0 May 17, 2009

This was a strange game mostly due to Mike Pelfrey inexplicably balking three times. And Bob Davidson wasn’t even in the park. Go figure. Both balks led to the 2 San Francisco runs. Pelfrey also gave up an RBI single to Matt Cain. That’s a recipe for a bad night.

The Mets offense was pretty much non-existant other than the 7 walks that Cain gave them. They only had 5 hits in the game and left 9 runners on base. Alex Cora left the game after injuring his thumb on a head first slide into second base. Fernando Tatis took over as Jose Reyes missed his fourth straight game with possible tendinitis in his knee.

The Mets did get the bases loaded twice but hit into double plays both times to kill the rally.

The Mets end up taking 3 of 4 from the Giants which is great for the start of a west coast road trip. It would’ve been nice to get the sweep but it’s a good start anyway. The Mets will be in Los Angeles tomorrow night for the start of a three game series.

What to watch: The Mets are trying to complete the 4-game sweep in San Francisco tonight behind Pelfrey. The Mets offense has been red hot this week. Pelfrey has put together a string of four good starts in a row after some early season struggles. Cain has been up and down this season but hasn’t let any teams really get away from him during his starts.

Mets 9 – Giants 6 May 16, 2009

It wasn’t a classic game for Johan Santana, but he got enough run support to get the win. He went 7 innings giving up 6 runs (4 earned) and had 7 strikeouts and no walks. He overcame two errors by Luis Castillo and David Wright to get through 7 innings, which was critical with Francisco Rodriguez having pitched four days in a row.

The middle of the Mets lineup was devastating to the Giants today. Carlos Beltran, Gary Sheffield, and Wright had three hits apiece of the Mets 16 hits on the day. Randy Johnson was no match for the Mets offense giving up 7 runs in 4 innings of work. It’s painful to watch him throwing 89 mph fast balls now after seeing his glory years in Seattle and Arizona.

The Mets were running on the Giants again today as well with two more stolen bases. They’re seemingly running at will against their pitchers and Bengie Molina. It’s got to be embarrassing at this point for the Giants.

The Mets are putting an old fashioned beat down on the Giants this weekend at their home park. The team is really playing like a well oiled machine this month at 12-3 so far.

Johan Santana (4-2 0.78) vs. Randy Johnson (3-3 5.89)

TV: FOX  RadioWFAN

What to watch: Talk about some big name lefties going up against each other. It’s not the Johnson of 15 years ago but he’s had a few good games this season. His last two starts have been pretty bad though. Santana has been incredible all season and lost two games due to lack of run support. That shouldn’t be an issue for the Mets today against Johnson. Jose Reyes should be back in the lineup at shortstop today as well.
