Mets In The News Aug. 14, 2009

After an off-day yesterday, the Mets return from a 2-5 road trip visiting two of the worst teams in baseball. San Diego and Arizona looked like All-Stars compared to this Mets team. Sadly, we now need to include the Mets as one of the worst teams in baseball. The Giants are in town this weekend, so at least we’ll have one quality team to watch at Citi Field.

Here’s the Mets in the news:

  • Mets manager Jerry Manuel wants Gary Sheffield back next year
  • The Mets have started to install imagery of famous players on the Field and Promenade levels, and the championship banners on the outfield wall. Finally!!! And they’re wearing some ridiculous throwback Giants uniforms this weekend.
  • Steve Popper of the Bergen Record is looking ahead to 2010
  • Ben Shipgel of the NY Times writes about how Daniel Murphy is going to benefit from Carlos Delgado’s latest injury setback

Shea Stadium DVD Contest Winner

essential games of sheaThis was the toughest contest to judge that I’ve had yet. There were so many great comments about the state of the current Mets, and even a remake of the lyrics to the “Meet the Mets” song. But I decided to go with Bernie Byrne in this one. His comments about the DVD set Essential Games of Shea Stadium persuaded me to go with him as the winner.

His comments were:

Personally, I’m wondering what the commentary will be like on some of the games. For the 69 Series game, it’s pretty much a given: Curt Gowdy and Lindsay Nelson. Same But what about the other games? Do we get the TV broadcasts or the radio broadcasts? Will they have both, where you can choose the commentary?

Okay, I was wondering because of the last game on the DVD set: the first game of the 2006 Subway Series.

Gary: “2-2 to Wright…hit in the air to center field…Damon going back…to the warning track…IT’S OVER HIS HEAD AND THE METS WIN IT!”

Howie: “The Mets have beaten Rivera! Put THAT in your books!”

But yes, I still remember the call for Piazza’s blast.

“Lopez wants it away…and it’s hit deep to left center…Andruw Jones on the run…this on has a chance…HOME RUN! MIKE PIAZZA! AND THE METS LEAD 3-2!”

Congratulations to Bernie Byrne. I’ll get some more contests started in the near future. Thank you to everyone that participated.

Mets Sheffield, Feliciano Waiver Claimed, Pulled Back

MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the Mets put Gary Sheffield and Pedro Feliciano through waivers but both were claimed by team(s). Apparently, the Mets were unable to work out a suitable trade for the players and decided to pull them back. Both players will have to remain with the Mets for the rest of the season.

That’s bad news for Gary Sheffield that’s starting to see diminishing playing time as he doesn’t figure into the Mets plans for 2010. I’m sure that he would’ve loved to go to an American League team in the playoff race despite his comments about wanting to stay with the Mets.

Mets Cut Ticket Prices For Remaining Games

The Mets finally bit the bullet and cut prices on some tickets for remaining games at Citi Field. It took until the middle of August to do it, when the front office finally had to admit that their team is terrible and just isn’t a draw for fans.

They’re dropping some tickets by 50% for the Metropolitan Box seats effective immediately. Four other games have 40% reductions and three games have 33% discounts. Call this the “Madoff Effect”.

For those of you that are season ticket holders or partial plan buyers, you just got “scr*wed” by the Mets. The value of your investment was just diminished considerably. That doesn’t even factor what they just did to the secondary market. The Mets are trying to undersell you on Stubhub and eBay… Ouch. They continue to treat their season ticket holders poorly again and again. It’s really sad.

Carlos Delgado Suffers Rehab Setback

All of the Mets beat reporters are writing that injured Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado suffered a strained oblique muscle while rehabbing in Florida from hip surgery. He won’t be able to perform any baseball activity for a couple of weeks.

This isn’t that big of a deal. The Mets have been without Delgado for most of the season and he won’t be here next season anyway. This is the last year of his contract and at 37 years old, the Mets really have no use for his services anymore.

Whether he can play again this season or not doesn’t make a difference to the Mets. But I’m sure that he’d like to show that he’s healthy enough to get a meager incentive-laden contract from someone in the offseason.

Mets 6 – D-Backs 4 Aug. 12, 2009

The Mets finally got a win to take one in the three-game series in Arizona. Oliver Perez was his usual self, working out of big trouble in the first few innings. He went 5.1 innings allowing 6 hits and 6 walks while striking out 7, but only allowed one run. His WHIP is up to a putrid 1.91.

The Mets offense was helped out by some dreadful play at catcher by the D-Backs. Both Chris Snyder and Miguel Montero had trouble holding onto pitches allowing three Mets runs to score on passed balls and wild pitches. They actually looked worse than the Mets. But the Mets did manage to put up 11 hits in the game but only two extra base hits. Both were triples by Cory Sullivan.

Omir Santos had a nice block of the plate against a charging Mark Reynolds. He held the ball while getting knocked down on a hard play, but a clean one. Nice job by Santos.

What to watch: The Mets try to avoid a sweep again before coming home to face the Giants starting on Friday. Perez had his best start of year against the Padres last Friday going 6.1 innings and giving up just 1 run. Garland threw a complete game win against the Mets on Aug. 2, but got hammered by the Nationals for a loss in his last start.
