Mets Home Stand Preview – May 21-27, 2010

New York Mets relief pitcher Hisanori Takahashi throws a pitch to the San Francisco Giants in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe biggest six games of the Mets season so far? Absolutely. The most difficult? Probably.

The Mets will be facing two of the majors best teams at home during this six-game home stand, as they face the reigning World Series champion New York Yankees, following a three-game set with the defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies.

Friday, May 21st: Yankees (Vazquez) vs. Mets (Takahashi) 7:10 PM
Saturday, May 22nd: Yankees (Hughes) vs. Mets (Pelfrey) 7:10 PM FOX
Sunday, May 23rd: Yankees (Sabathia) vs. Mets (Santana) 8:05 PM ESPN
Tuesday, May 25th: Phillies (Moyer) vs. Mets (Dickey) 7:10 PM
Wednesday, May 26th: Phillies (Blanton) vs. Mets (Maine) 7:10 PM
Thursday, May 27th: Phillies (Hamels) vs. Mets (Takahashi) 7:10 PM

The Mets starting pitching isn’t looking too strong in this series. Hisanori Takahashi’s spot (Jon Niese’s) comes up twice, in the first and last games of the home stand, and R.A. Dickey (Oliver Perez) comes up once as well. I put John Maine in as a probable for Wednesday because according to him, he’s fine. Until medical tests can prove otherwise, he seems good to go.

The only sure-fires for now are Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana going on Saturday and Sunday. In a six-game set against two of the league’s best, that’s pretty scary.

Predicted Record: I’m gonna say that Takahashi pitches excellent in his two starts, Pelfrey and Santana come up big, and the Mets go 4-2 over this six-game home stand to not only own current bragging rights over their two biggest rivals, but creep back up to the .500 mark. This may just be the optimistic Mets fan in me, hopefully my optimism comes to fruition.
