Mets 9 – Marlins 2 April 3, 2011

The Mets put a beat down on Javier Vazquez early in the game today. They put up 7 runs in the first three innings and the game was effectively over. The Mets win the road series which is something we didn’t see much of last year at all. R.A. Dickey got the win although he wasn’t as sharp as we saw him last season. It’s a good start to the season winning this one in Miami.

The Mets offense went off on Vazquez and the subsequent Marlins pitchers with 8  hits and a staggering 9 walks. Willie Harris continued his hot hitting with a home run in the first inning. Ike Davis tacked on another one in the third. It was a true team effort with the Mets getting hits up and down the lineup.

Dickey only gave up 1 unearned run in 6 IP, but he did give up 5 hits and 3 walks. So he had runners on base frequently and was able to get out of jams. Chris Capuano didn’t look good at all relieving Dickey. He gave up 3 hits, a walk, and a run in 0.2 IP. Not a good start to the season for Capuano.

The Mets are off tomorrow and head to Philly on Tuesday. Hopefully, they can another road series win there too.

Mets 6 – Marlins 4 April 2, 2011

This was a good game with several turns of fortune for both teams. It’s good for the Mets to get the first win under their belts so they don’t have to worry about getting swept in their first series tomorrow afternoon. Jon Niese had a very shaky start, giving up 2 runs in the first inning. But he recovered nicely to pitch the next 6 scoreless innings.

The Mets had some offense going tonight too for a change. David Wright had 3 hits including a solo homer to right field in the fourth inning. Ike Davis had 2 hits, both doubles and an RBI in the sixth inning.

It looked like Josh Thole might be the goat of the game when he singled in the seventh inning to right field and took a big turn at first base. Emilio Bonifacio threw behind him and Thole stumbled going back to first, getting thrown out. It was an ugly, embarrassing play but Thole redeemed himself in the ninth with the go-ahead RBI single.

K-Rod was terrible in the ninth, giving up 3 hits and a run to blow the save. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It was a terrible start to 2011 for him.

The Mets bombed the Marlins bullpen in the tenth inning though. They had 4 hits and scored 3 runs led by a big RBI double down the right field line by Willie Harris.

Marlins 6 – Mets 2 April 1, 2011

The Mets couldn’t do anything against Josh Johnson for most of the night. They got no-hit into the seventh inning when Willie Harris finally broke up the no-hitter with a double to left center field. The Mets had no offense, as was the case for much of last season. They only managed 4 hits and 2 runs, although Johnson is a big-time pitcher. Harris had 2 hits and was the only one that could do anything against Johnson.

Mike Pelfrey didn’t look good at all. He’s not going to have much success as a #1 starter if he keeps pitching like tonight’s game. He only lasted 4.1 IP giving up 5 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks. The big blow was a grand slam by John Buck in the fourth inning.

It’s a disappointing start to the season because the Mets never really seemed to be in the game. Getting no-hit through seven can do that to a team.

Mets Play Two, Lose Two, September 29, 2010

A Sparse Crowd Watches the Mets Lose Both Games of a Doubleheader

Yesterday’s double header was double trouble for the Mets.

Game 1 – Brewers 8, Mets 7
Game2 – Brewers 3, Mets 1

Game 1 was practically given away to the Brewers with Jon Niese giving up 6 runs in the 3rd inning. The Brewers, not to be outdone, allowed the Mets right back into the game by giving up 2 runs in the 3rd and 5 runs in the 4th to briefly give the Mets the lead 7-6. The Mets gave that lead right back by allowing 2 runs in the 8th and that was all the scoring for the game as the Brewers defeated the Mets by a score of 8-7.

New York used 8 pitchers in the first game because soon to be ex-Mets Manager, Jerry Manuel, could care less. He’s out of here in a few days. Niese started the game and went a full 2.2 innings followed by Ryota Igarashi, Raul Valdes, Sean Green, Elmer Dessens, Pedro Feliciano, Manny Acosta & finally, Hisanori Takahashi.

Game 2 featured a pitching matchup of Dickey vs Bush. No this is not a typo and Twitter users certainly caught the double entendre. R.A. Dickey, the new Mets ace, gave up 6 hits in 7 innings but only allowed 1 earned run. He still took the loss in the nightcap as the Mets offense was completely overpowered when the Brewers trotted out the way past his prime, all time saves leader, Trevor Hoffman, who pitched the 9th to earn his 601st save of his career. Note the Brewers regular closer, John Axford, was not available to close because he was used in Game 1.

Mercifully the season is over in 4 days.

Injury Update: Carlos Beltran is out for the rest of the season due to “Mild Inflammation” in his right knee (What’s New?) and Nick Evans injured his left, non-throwing, shoulder.

Phillies 3 – Mets 2, September 24, 2010 – Mets Mail It In

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets didn’t stand a chance in attempting to stop the Phillies winning streak which now stands at 11 games. At this rate the Phillies could clinch the division on Sunday with the Mets forced to watch.

Despite having R.A. Dickey on the mound, who pitched well enough for the win, the Mets generated almost no offense. Shane Victorino leads off the game with a homer and then in the 2nd, Victorino doubles to score Wilson Valdes.

Angel Pagan’s 1oth homer of the year tie’s it up at 2 in the top of the 4th. Dickey give’s the lead right back in the bottom of the inning by giving up a single to Raul Ibanez who then went to 2nd on a passed ball. Ibanez ultimately scored on a single by Carlos Ruiz making the score 3-2.

After the 4th inning the Mets mailed it in. Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran just did not show up tonight. Angel Pagan, 1-4, 1hr, 2 RBI’s and Ike Davis, 3-4, 1 run scored, were the entire offense and only bright spots of the game.

If the Mets can’t get the win tomorrow with Dillon Gee going against Kyle Kendrick, expect the Phillies to wrap up the division on Sunday when they have Cole Hammels on the mound against Mike Pelfrey.

Marlins 5 – Mets 2, September 21, 2010 – Mets Mathematically Eliminated from the Wild Card

May 28, 2010- Milwaukee, WI. Miller Park..New York Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey ..Milwaukee Brewers won over the New York Mets 2-0, taking the first game of the 3 game series against the Mets...Mike McGinnis / CSM.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIf you missed it, and most people did, the Mets lost to the Marlins last night by a score of 5-2.

Although the Mets have not been a part of this pennant race for at least 6 weeks, they were finally mathematically eliminated from the wild card very quietly in front of a crowd of maybe 500 people. Mike Pelfrey pitched another good game giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits in 7 innings but the Mets offense, which actually managed 11 hits, couldn’t generate any run support aside from 2 solo homers, 1 each by Lucas Duda and David Wright. Sloppy plays by Wright and Jose Reyes in the 7th resulted in back to back errors and the Mets went quietly in the 9th to be mathematically eliminated yet again while playing the Marlins.

It’s been almost relaxing to watch these last Met games knowing they are absolutely meaningless games, especially from here on out. It’s also comforting to know that there are finally going to be significant changes this offseason.

The changes that I have been hoping would happen last winter are now well overdue. A new GM and new manager really should have been done last winter. This winter a new GM can start entertaining trades for the clubhouse cancers http://www.honeytraveler.com/pharmacy/ Carlos Beltran and Luis Castillo, attempt to drop a few bad contracts like Oliver Perez and K-Rod and really explore options for Wright and Reyes. If we can get some value for them, great. If not, build an entirely new team around them. Mets 6 – Pirates 2 September 16th 2010

Less Than 1000 People at Citi Field?

The Mets complete their first 4 Game sweep of the year, Mike Pelfrey earns his career high 15th win, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits whiling driving in the go ahead run in the 6th inning, making the score 3-2.

Angel Pagan continues his outstanding year with 3 hits, 2 RBI’s and an awesome catch in center and with a little help from the inept Pirates, the Mets pull above .500 for the first time in almost a month.

Initially, the game was delayed due to the fact an unconfirmed tornado touched down less than a mile from Citi Field. The hazardous weather conditions pushed the first pitch back to 7:20pm.

The crazy weather and the fact the Mets were playing the Pirates resulted in the lowest turnout I have ever seen at a Major League game. There might have been less than 1,000 people in the stands which made the dozen or so Pirates fans stand out that much more but they weren’t really vocal. They may be having a worse year than we are but they did not have the expectations the Mets had.  I’m still not sure why there was the one Philly fan attending the game but he eventually got kicked out to some cheers, the loudest noise of the night. Aside from that, the game was eerily quiet.

As a bonus, due to the weather, the Mets did announce that last nights tickets would be redeemable for one of the games against the Brewers, September 27th through the 30th. Another series that will not be well attended.

It looks like Mets fans are speaking with their wallets and staying away in droves unless the Wilpons can find more creative ways to give away tickets.
