Mets 5 – Reds 4 May 4, 2010

MLB: New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThis was a really good game on several levels. First, it was just a close game that went down to the ninth inning. Second, John Maine had a solid start going 6 innings and giving up only 1 ER.

Maine looked good throughout the game even though he didn’t have the velocity that he’s had in past seasons. I think we just need to get used to that. The low to mid-90’s heater just isn’t there anymore. Tonight he was getting the Reds hitter fishing at the high fastball though. We haven’t seen that consistently in quite a while

The Mets put up 8 hits including a 2 for 4 night from Jose Reyes, who also had a double and an RBI. David Wright also had a huge bomb in the the fourth inning that hit the second deck in left field. But the offensive hero of the game was Rod Barajas. He hit his seventh homer of the season in the ninth off Francisco Cordero to break the tie and win the game.

The Mets break their three game losing streak and try to win the series tomorrow afternoon.

New York Mets starting pitcher Perez delivers pitch to Cincinnati Reds during first inning of play in their MLB baseball game in Cincinnati

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets lost this one on a walk off in the 11th inning by Laynce Nix off Manny Acosta. It’s the Mets third straight loss and it’s something Braves fans are used to seeing from Acosta. The big positive of the night is Oliver Perez’ performance.

Perez gave up a leadoff homer and I thought we were in for another long night. Uncharacteristically, Perez kept it together and pitched a solid 6 innings only giving up 2 runs. His pitch count was good and he only gave up 4 hits and 1 walk. That was very positive.

The Mets had 9 hits including 3 doubles in the game and RBI’s from Jeff Francoeur and Jose Reyes.

Mets starting pitcher Santana delivers a pitch to the Phillies during their National League MLB game in Philadelphia

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets and, more so, Johan Santana got absolutely torched by the Phillies in the final game of their 3-game series. Santana gave up 10 runs in 3.2 IP including four home runs, one of those a grand slam to Shane Victorino. It was really ugly tonight for the Mets.

The Mets did have some offense against Jamie Moyer. David Wright had a big 3-run homer in the first inning and things were looking good. But not for long. Rod Barajas hit another homer as well. But the 5 runs the Mets put up weren’t enough to overcome the disastrous start that Santana had.

Santana looked worse than I’ve ever seen him as a Mets player. He gave up a bases loaded walk to Moyer of all things. Then Victorino hit the grand slam. It was hideous.

The Mets leave town losing two of three in Philly and a half game back in the NL East.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay in Washington

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Phillies took this one in a laugher as the Mets became one of the many victims of Roy Halladay’s greatness. Halladay was the star of the game throwing a complete game, the 52nd of his career. He only gave up 3 hits and 1 walk against 6 strikeouts. This game was the 17th shutout of Halladay’s 13 year career.

Mike Pelfrey got bombed today. It was the first poor start of his 2010 season. He was looking pretty good through the first three innings and completely lost it in the fourth giving up 6 runs on 7 hits including one by Halladay and a three run shot by Victorino.

The Mets eight game winning streak ends today but they’re in a good position to take the series tomorrow night on ESPN. The Mets will have Johan Santana going against Jamie Moyer.

New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathan Niese throws against the Colorado Rockies in their MLB baseball game in Denver

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets put the beat down on the Phillies tonight led by an outstanding start from Jon Niese and two homers by Rod Barajas. Niese was in complete control through 7 IP, helped by having a lead from the second inning on. The Mets win their eighth straight game in a route. The best way to win one in Philly.

The offense really came alive in the bandbox Citizens Bank Ballpark. The Mets had 10 hits including four homers, the two by Barajas plus David Wright and Jeff Francoeur had one each.  And Angel Pagan was 3 for 5 with a triple and two RBI’s.

Francoeur was hit by a pitch pretty badly on the left elbow in the seventh inning. He ran the bases, and even scored, but had to leave the game. X-rays were negative though. I was disappointed that Niese didn’t go for payback in the bottom of the inning. Jenry Mejia did hit Chase Utley in the eighth but it was a breaking ball. Clearly, he wasn’t trying to hit him.

Overall, it was an excellent game. There were some great plays in the outfield including two by Francoeur and one at the wall by Jason Bay. The Mets are really firing on all cylinders right now. It’s exciting to watch again.

Mets 7 – Dodgers 3 April 28, 2010

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets completed the sweep against the Dodgers this afternoon, the second consecutive sweep amid a 9-1 home stand. It’s been an incredible week and a half for the Mets surging into first place in the NL East.

The pitching was good once again today with John Maine going 6 innings and giving up only two earned runs on a Russell Martin homer in the fifth. He got through six on 102 pitches, which is pretty good for Maine. His velocity doesn’t appear to have improved. His fastball was still in the high 80’s. But he was firing strikes right from the start and he ended up striking out 9.

The bullpen cleaned up the last three innings without giving up a run. Francisco Rodriguez did give up  1 hit and 1 walk in the ninth. Other than that, the bullpen was spotless.

On offense, Angel Pagan and Jeff Francoeur both had 2 RBI’s and the Mets, as a team, had 5 two-out RBI’s. That’s some serious clutch hitting. The new lineup with Jose Reyes batting third is definitely working right now.

Ike Davis continues to chip in on a daily basis. He was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI. He seems to add something on offense in every game. His season average is up to .355 with a .424 OBP and .980 OPS. Not bad for a rookie.

The first place Mets are off tomorrow before heading to Philly for a weekend series.

New York Mets David Wright slaps hands with Jason Bay at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets put on an offensive show in the second game of the double header tonight. They swept the double header today and won their sixth straight game. This is the kind of game that I expected to see a lot of this season with the Mets scoring plenty of runs.

Oliver Perez started the game but didn’t last long. He only went 3.2 IP and gave up 3 ER. Jerry Manuel clearly had a quick hook ready for Perez. But Hisanori Takahashi put up another great long relief performance going 3.1 IP giving up only 1 ER.

The star on offense was David Wright surprisingly. He was hearing the boo’s in the first game. In the second game he went 3 for 4 with 4 RBI’s including a bases clearing triple in the sixth inning. Hopefully, that’ll get Wright going again.

Ike Davis chipped in with 3 RBI’s after going 1 for 3 and Henry Blanco was 2 for 4 in the game.

The Mets will try to finish off a second consecutive series sweep when the play the Dodgers tomorrow afternoon.
