Daily Mets News: Reyes Rocks Marlins And More

It’s hard to get excited about the results of a spring training game but Jose Reyes went off on the Marlins today. He hit two homers and had six RBI’s. But the great news is that he’s bringing back Professor Reyes after a one year absence. I don’t know why but I loved the Professor Reyes bit. I thought it was a lot of fun.

Onto the Mets news:

  • Tim Redding is still recovering from shoulder pain and won’t throw off a mound for a few more days.
  • Sean Green cut the nail on his middle finger on his pitching hand. He won’t miss any time though.
  • WFAN’s Mike Francesa is broadcasting from Tradition Field today and tomorrow. He’s got tons of audio clips of the the Mets that I’ll be linking to later today. And he’s trying to get Ryan Church and David Wright on tomorrow. Both of which he’s feuded with.
  • Johan Santana was scratched from his Friday start due to tightness in his pitching elbow. He’ll still get five starts in before opening day and doesn’t anticipate missing any other starts this spring.
  • Babes Love Baseball does their season preview of the Mets in haiku form.
  • The Mets received more than 803,000 entries for the lottery to purchase tickets for the home opener.

Poll: New York Mets 2009 Leadoff Hitter

We’ve heard some talk from Mets manager Jerry Manuel this spring about batting Luis Castillo in the leadoff spot instead of Jose Reyes. Now we’re starting to see that actually happen in spring games. Not that spring games mean too much, so we have to take it with a grain of salt. I’m curious to hear what your thoughts are on the topic. I find it hard to believe that Castillo could supplant Reyes as the Mets regular leadoff hitter.

Daily Mets News: Green, Maine, Martinez, And More

The big news today is that the Mets are playing their first spring training game against the Orioles in Fort Lauderdale. Sean Green was hurt pitching in the first inning. The early word is that he split a finger nail on his pitching hand.

Onto the news of the day:

  • John Harper wrote a nice piece on Fernando Martinez for the Daily News. It’s a good summary of how the 20-year old prospect is doing offensively. And he may be in the big leagues at some point this season.
  • John Maine pitched two scoreless innings yesterday. It was the first game that he’s pitched in since last August 23rd. You’ll remember that he had a bone spur on his pitching shoulder that required surgery.
  • Joel Sherman of the NY Post writes a column about the Mets releasing or trading Duaner Sanchez by April 1st. He suggests that Sanchez may not find a spot on the major league roster for the Mets.
  • Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports writes about the 12 major league managers that don’t have contracts that are guaranteed beyond this season
  • Drew Silva at MLB Trade Rumors writes about the Phillies’ payroll at $132.5 million is the highest in franchise history.

Phillies Bullpen Gets TV Show

MLB Network announced that they’ll be following the Phillies bullpen for a new show called “The Pen”. The show will debut on June 1st and hopefully have many episodes of them getting smoked by the Mets. Apparently, it’s going to be a reality show type of format but not following them around 24 hours a day.

MLB said that they chose to follow the Phillies because of their success last season and their diverse personalities. I’m surprised they wouldn’t have followed a team with a closer competition like the Cubs. It would be fun to see Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg trying to top each other’s performances.

Thanks to Awful Announcing for the lead.

We’ve got the list of the 15 New York Mets that’ll be playing for their countries in the World Baseball Classic. Most players will start leaving the Mets at the end of the week to begin working out with their teams next Monday. Here’s the list of Mets:

Major League Roster

Jose Reyes- Dominican Republic

Oliver Perez- Mexico

Pedro Feliciano, Alex Cora, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado- Puerto Rico

J.J. Putz, David Wright- United States

Francisco Rodriguez- Venezuela

Minor League Rosters

Stefan Welch- Australia

Shawn Bowman- Canada

Elmer Dessens- Mexico

Ruben Tejada- Panama

Nelson Figueroa, Jesus Feliciano- Puerto Rico

Mets fans can breath a collective sigh of relief that Johan Santana isn’t playing for Venezuela in this tournament. He’s just too valuable to the Mets to risk injury in a tournament like this. The Mets should keep him in a protective bubble when he isn’t on the field.

There are plenty of stories to report about the Mets this morning from Port St. Lucie. They played their first intra-squad game yesterday with Jerry Manuel watching carefully from behind the shortstop position.

Onto the Mets in the news:

  • Ryan Church talked to  the media about Manuel telling the media that Fernando Tatis will see time in right field. Manuel said he didn’t care about the players reaction to his comments. He’s trying to put the team in the best position to win.
  • The Mets are likely to announce a player development agreement with the Mexico City Red Devils of the Mexican League. That’s the team that Ricardo Rincon played for last season.
  • Joel Sherman of the Post writes about Johan Santana mentoring Oliver Perez and Ryan Church downplaying talk of a right field platoon. This is a good, short read.
  • David Lennon of Newsday writes about Fernando Tatis’ aching palm and Ryan Church receiving an “I (heart) New York” t-shirt.
  • Ben Shipgel of the NY Times does a tremendous profile of new third base coach Razor Shines.
  • Ryan Fagan of The Sporting News does his 2009 Mets preview. He predicts a wild card berth for the Mets.
