Register For Mets 2009 Opening Day Tickets

Today is the last day to register for a chance to buy opening day tickets for the first official game at Citi Field. You can register at the Mets site. You can register until 11:59pm EST. If you’re selected, you can buy up to four tickets for opening day on Monday April 13th against the Padres (of all teams). It’s a 7:10 pm start time for the game. So register now. I did…

Here are some links from all over the Internet about the Mets today:

  • Manager Jerry Manuel backtracks on yesterday’s statement about a Church/Tatis platoon in right field from the Daily News.
  • The starting outfielders are working out on Field 7 which is modeled after the Citi Field outfield dimensions from NY Times.
  • Jose Valentin is still trying to win a spot on the major league roster. But he’s okay with playing and coaching at Triple-A Buffalo if it comes to that from NY Times.
  • Daniel Murphy playing everyday in left field is the topic at Ontheblack.com.
  • Joel Sherman of the NY Post has two posts today about the RF and LF platoon issue. And he says that Freddy Garcia hasn’t looked great so far this spring.
  • The first game at Citi Field now will be between St. John’s and Georgetown on March 29.
  • Carlos Muniz joins the ranks of Mets pitchers working on a split finger fastball this spring.

NYT: Mets Prospect Josh Thole

I love the work that Ben Shipgel does for the New York Times. This week he’s been covering the Mets from Port St. Lucie and doing a tremendous job of it. I particularly like a profile that he wrote for yesterday’s NYT on Mets catching prospect Josh Thole.

Thole is the most advanced catching prospect that the Mets have right now. His development is ahead of 19 year-old fast track catcher Francisco Peña. Both of these guys could be moving up quickly when Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro (presumably) leave the Mets in free agency after this season. I really don’t see the Mets making a play to bring either back unless it’s for a one-year contract. There have been plenty of rumors that the Mets were trying to unload Ramon Castro during the offseason unsuccessfully.

So we can plan on seeing some new blood behind the plate next season. I know that 2009 hasn’t even started yet. But it’s always good to see what kind of talent that the Mets have in the pipeline.

Rosenthal: Mets Won’t Choke Again

We’ve got some video from Fox Sports and Ken Rosenthal today. Basically, he talks about K-Rod and Putz joining the Mets this season. He also gets into Redding, Garcia, Niece, and Parnell bolstering the fifth spot in the rotation.

Rosenthal does echo the sentiments I’ve heard a lot from Mets fans that Omar Minaya didn’t address the offense this offseason. But there may be some big bats available at the trade deadline this season. Namely, Matt Holliday and Maglio Ordonez are likely to become available for trades in my opinion.

Citi Field PatchThere’s a new patch in town and it isn’t miserable like the ridiculous uniform patch that Citi Group designed for the team. This one will be on the caps for the 2009 season, which you can see on the left side of the post.

Also in the news, Adam Rubin at the Daily News gives a nice rundown of the new foods that will be available at Citi Field. The lineup of restaurants looks fantastic. What a difference from the fare at Shea!

Bart Hubbach of the Post writes about Mets manager Jerry Manuel’s inspiring speech to the team prior to yesterday’s full squad workout. The player comments after the speech sound like it was a really impressive and motivational talk. Good job Jerry.

Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports writes about the Mets-Phillies trash talking rivalry. Basically, his take is that the Mets should shut up after the way the last two seasons ended.
