The Mets decided to replace Chris Schwinden in the starting rotation with Miguel Batista… For now. But they should take a look at what Jeremy Hefner’s been doing at Buffalo so far this season. He’s 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in 33 IP. He threw 6 scoreless innings over 5 games for the Mets this spring too.

Mike Pelfrey’s Mets Career Ends with Surgery

Mets starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey underwent Tommy John surgery today in Alabama by Dr. James Andrews. The surgery will force Pelfrey to miss the rest of the 2012 season and, in all likelihood, end his disappointing Mets career.

Pelfrey was a non-tender candidate coming into 2012. So it’s impossible to imagine him coming back to the team following a major injury. If he doesn’t come back, he’ll be remembered by Mets fans as a big disappointment after being the 9th overall draft pick in 2005. Hopes were high for Pelfrey to continue the Mets tradition of drafting and developing great starting pitchers that goes back to the 1960’s. Philip Humber Throws Perfect Game

CLEVELAND, OH - SEPTEMBER 22: Starting pitcher...

Former Met Philip Humber threw the 21st perfect game in MLB history today for the White Sox against the Mariners in Seattle. Humber was drafted by the Mets in 2004 and traded to the Twins in 2008 as part of the Johan Santana deal.

Add Humber to the list of fomer Mets that threw a no-hitter, or perfect game in this case, once they left the Mets. It drives me crazy every time I hear about another for Met throwing a no-hitter as the Mets come up on 9,000 games without one.

Congratulations to Humber and here’s to hoping someone on the 2012 roster can finally break the streak and leave the Padres as the only team without a no-hitter in team history.

Mets Delaying David Wright Contract Extension

CBS Sports is reporting that the Mets are delaying working on a contract extension for David Wright. I wrote that the Mets should offer Wright a contract to keep him with the team for the foreseeable future. But they’re choosing to wait because of Wright’s recent down seasons and some big contract extensions signed by comparable players recently that would increase the value of any contract Wright would sign

It’s a gamble for both parties to wait on an extension for Wright. If he plays well, it’s in Wright’s best interest to get to free agency and exercise his full market potential. Video: Mets David Wright Gives Phillies the Finger

Despite playing with a broken pinkie finger, David Wright returned to action yesterday and crushed the first pitch he saw to deep center for a home run. The bomb off Vince Worley can be seen in the video below. Wright ended up going 3 for 5 with 2 runs in the game.

As I wrote earlier this week, he broke the finger diving back to first base on a pickoff attempt. And there was serious consideration about putting him on the disabled list. As a matter of fact, Josh Satin was flown in from Buffalo and was in Philly warming up before the game yesterday.

The Mets took both games of the series so far and go for the sweep this afternoon against Cole Hamels. Mike Pelfrey is on the mound for the Mets and I’m sure he’s glad to have Wright in the field behind him after that performance yesterday.

David Wright Has Broken Finger

The Mets announced that third baseman David Wright has a broken pinky finger and will miss a couple of games. He’s not going on the disabled list… yet. Based on the Mets recent history, it wouldn’t surprise me if that happens within the next week. The Mets seemed to have difficulty in recent years determining if players need to be on the disabled list because of the severity of their injuries.

Wright’s inability to play last night against the Nationals, combined with Ike Davis’ scheduled day off for Valley Fever evaluation, led to one of the most impotent lineup’s in recent memory. Continue reading “David Wright Has Broken Finger”

Mets Niese, Tejada Power Sweep of Braves

The Mets put the nail in the Braves coffin today at Citi Field to sweep the first series of the season. It’s early, so I’m not getting too excited. I know that this roster doesn’t stack up, on paper, to the other rosters in the division. But I like that they’ve got some fight in them.

The Mets finished off the last game of the series with a 7-5 win highlighted by Jon Niese taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He ended up coming out in the seventh inning before recording an out after throwing 103 pitches.

Ruben Tejada, who usually looks like an automatic out to me, led the Mets offense going 4 for 5 with 2 RBI’s and 2 Runs. Hopefully, it’s not a fluke and he’ll be able to contribute offensively with some consistency.
