Preview: Rockies at Mets April 11, 2011

Colorado Rockies (6-2) at New York Mets (4-5)  7:10pm

Jason Hammel (1-0 7.20) vs. Mike Pelfrey (0-1 15.63)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Rockies come to town for a four game series after taking three of four in Pittsburgh. They’re playing some good baseball after signing CarGo and Troy Tulowitzki to big contracts this offseason. Hammel’s first start against the Dodgers wasn’t very good (5 IP, 4 runs) but he did get a win.

Pelfrey has been struggling badly in his first two starts. He needs to turn things around quickly or the Mets will be in trouble with Johan Santana out until mid-season. The Mets have lost four of their last five games and need a win and a good start from Pelfrey tonight badly.

Nationals 7 – Mets 3 April 10, 2011

The Nationals took the series today at Citi Field with a win in 11 innings. Chris Young had an excellent start going 7 IP and only allowing 1 run. The Mets offense only managed 8 hits in the game and struck out 17 times including 4 by Willie Harris alone.

Blaine Boyer blew another game in the 11th inning today raising his ERA to 10.80. That earned him a quick trip to the waiver wire being DFA’d after the game. Ryota Igarashi and Jason Isringhausen were called up and will be with the team tomorrow.

Lucas Duda, hitting .118, blew a fly ball in the 11th inning and he earned a one-way ticket to Triple-A Buffalo.

Overall, it’s a poor start to lose a home series to the Nats. That shouldn’t happen. But the Rockies come to town tomorrow and it doesn’t get any easier because they’re playing well so far this season.

Video: Mets Weekly Report on Pelfrey, Collins, Warthen

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - FEBRUARY 24: RY 24: Mik...

In this week’s episode of the the Mets Weekly Report with Kerel Cooper of On The Black, we talk about the first week of games in Florida, Philly, and home against the Nationals. Specifically, we get into Mike Pelfrey getting boo’d during player introductions on opening day. Kerel was at the game and said that K-Rod got the loudest boo’s and then Pelf got plenty as well.

We also talk about an article in the Bergen Record this week that Terry Collins time may be short with the Mets. That may be true but can we give the guy more than a week before we start writing him off?

The last segment is about the under-performing pitching staff. Dan Warthen needs to get these guys going quickly. The Mets have the second worst team ERA in the National League. Only the Astros are worse.

Check out the video below and leave your comments on the state of the Mets this week.

Washington Nationals (3-5) at New York Mets (4-4)  1:10pm

Jason Marquis (0-0 2.84) vs. Chris Young (1-0 1.69)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Nats and Mets play the rubber game of the series this afternoon at Citi Field. The Mets can’t lose a home series to a second division team like the Nats if they expect to be contenders for a playoff spot at the end of the season. It’s that simple.

Marquis had a nice start in Florida in a losing cause going 6.1 IP and allowing 2 runs in his season debut. He only pitched in 13 games last year because of injury.

Young pitched a very nice game in Philly in his season debut going 5.1 IP and allowing only 1 run to a good team in a tough park to pitch in. It’ll be interesting to see if Terry Collins plays Carlos Beltran today after his two-homer game last night. I’m sure they were planning to give him the day off today. I wouldn’t sit him down after hitting two homers though.

Mets 8 – Nationals 4 April 9, 2011

The Mets got their first home win in front of a lot of empty seats at Citi Field tonight. Carlos Beltran put on a show hitting two homers, both right-handed in the game to lead the offense. Beltran has been getting good wood on the ball so it wasn’t a surprise to see him start hitting. But two homers at Citi Field is a feat.

Chris Capuano got his first win as a Met despite the fact that he gave up 4 runs in 6 IP. He gave up 7 hits and a walk but he also had 7 strikeouts. He won’t win too many games with a 6.75 ERA (or keep  his job in the rotation) but it was good enough for a win tonight against the perennial basement dwelling Nationals.

The Mets took the lead for good in the sixth on a two-run triple by Ike Davis to right center. Then Daniel Murphy had a pinch-hit RBI single that scored Davis.

The Mets and Nationals will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon.

Preview: Nationals at Mets April 9, 2011

washington-nationals-logoWashington Nationals (3-4) at New York Mets (3-4)  7:10pm

Tom Gorzelanny (0-0 NA) vs.Chris Capuano (0-0 13.50)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: It’s a battle of bottom-of-the-rotation starters today at Citi Field unfortunately for everyone that bought tickets for today’s game. Gorzelanny hasn’t had a start yet this season and neither has Capuano. As a matter of fact, Gorzelanny hasn’t even appeared in a game yet. Capuano has only had one disastrous relief appearance.

The Mets hope to end their three game losing streak today. The Nationals are looking to win their third straight game today.

Video: Mets Fans Thoughts on Opening Day

Here’s a good video from opening day 2011 by Dexter Henry of BackpackBroadcasting.com. He does a great job of capturing the mood and the thoughts of Mets fans about this season.

The fans are excited about opening day but have reservations about the team’s prospects for this season, as do I. Pretty much every fan I’ve talked to from my friends to people I work with are cautiously optimistic. I think everyone expects the Mets to be around .500 this season. Although I’ve talked to a few people that are expecting much more like frequent commenter here TD. He’s expecting around 88 wins this year.

Check out the video below and the link to Backpack Broadcasting above for some good videos on the local NY sports teams.
