New York Mets (38-28) at New York Yankees (41-25) 7:05 pm

Hisanori Takahashi (5-2 3.48) vs Javier Vazquez (6-5 5.43)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets roll into the Bronx winners of six straight games and the Yankees just lost two of three to the Phillies. After some serious questions about Takahashi starting, he had a good game against the light-hitting Orioles in his last start going 7 innings and giving up 1 run. Vazquez has won three straight starts after having a rough beginning to the season.

The Long Lost Yankees Mascot

Apr. 16, 2010 - Bronx, United States - epa02120470 Fans stand in the rain during a weather delay of the game between the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, USA, 16 April 2010.

Time for an interesting Yankees fact before the second and final Subway Series of 2010.

Very interesting information I found on “Big League Stew” a Yahoo sports blog, and also tweeted by George Steinbrenner on twitter, conveniently before Part 2 of the Subway Series. The Yankees did have a mascot! Blasphemy! Check out the Video.

How many of you know Yankees Fans? I know quite a few and Yankees fans will all state that the Yankees don’t need a mascot. That’s beneath them. Continue reading “The Long Lost Yankees Mascot”

Mets’ Jason Bay Lack of Power

I’m surprised that I’m not more concerned about Jason Bay. And I’m surprised that I haven’t heard more rumbling and grumbling about Bay from my friends and fellow Mets fans about him too. Bay seems to be likable. He hustles all of the time to the point that you rarely see players do these days. And he plays a much better left field than I expected. He’s not great in the field but he makes all of the plays and doesn’t make any dumb throws. He’s always throwing to the right spot, hitting the cutoff man at the right times.

There’s no denying Bay’s inauspicious start at the plate though. The Mets haven’t gotten the guy that they thought they were getting. His OPS is down about .100 below what you would expect. 4 home runs after playing 65 games is a concern. It’s more than a concern. He was the guy that could pull the ball down the left field line and get it out of Citi Field.

Jack Moore did an analysis for FanGraphs on Bay’s 2010 season to this point. He came to the following conclusion: Continue reading “Mets’ Jason Bay Lack of Power”

Mets’ Cory Vaughn to Brooklyn

Brooklyn Cyclones
Image via Wikipedia

The Mets fourth round selection, Cory Vaughn, is heading to the Single A affiliate Brooklyn Cyclones. Cory has a strong pedigree of baseball in the family and the frame to prove it. Cory’s father, Greg Vaughn, was a feared slugger for the Padres and set their single season home run mark at 50. He is also related to a player that Mets fans may not want to remember in Mo Vaughn.

Nevertheless, the Vaughns of years past have a track record of launching tape measure shots into the seats. Cory’s size (6’3 230) certainly gives us reason to believe that Coney Island natives could soon be catching home run balls from the top of the famed Cyclone coaster. Another reason to be optimistic is the coaching. Tony Gwynn, one of the best hitters of our or any generation, coached the young slugger during his tenure at San Diego State. Mets 6 – Indians 4 June 17, 2010

June 16, 2010 - Cleveland, OHIO, UNITED STATES - epa02206096 Jose Reyes of the New York Mets tosses his glove in the air during the eighth inning against the Cleveland Indians in their game at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, 16 June 2010. The Mets defeated the Indians 8-4.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got another quality start from R.A. Dickey who went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs (2 earned). He went to 5-0 with his fifth consecutive win. He’s had quite a few baserunners with a 1.41 WHIP but really seems to bear down and get out of trouble keeping his ERA at 2.82.

The offense was rocking again with 14 hits and 2 walks. They scored 3 runs in the first inning and were off and running. Jose Reyes had a big game going 3 for 5 with 2 runs, 1 RBI, 1 double, and 1 triple. He also made a couple of really nice plays in the field. He looks like the old Reyes.

The Mets swept their second consecutive road series and start up three games in the Bronx tomorrow night.

It seems like just last week I was hearing about some young phenom named Fernando Martinez launching majestic home runs nightly for Double-A Binghamton. Nowadays, we’re starting to learn more about a new stud whose making some noise on the farm. 18-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Wilmer Flores continues to turn heads and provide a presence at the plate that is well beyond his years.

Flores is sporting a .286/.352/.451 clip for Class A Savannah of the South Atlantic League thus far this season. According to Scouting the Sally, Flores is maturing rapidly at the plate. He tacked on 10-15 pounds of muscle during the off-season, and once he makes it to the show he is projected to possess ample power from the right side. We’re talking about a kid who batted .307 between Rookie and A ball in 2008 as a 16-year-old. Continue reading “Mets’ Wilmer Flores Making Strides”
