Mets Brass Gathers Today, Big Decisions Ahead

Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman is reporting that the Mets management gathered in Port St. Lucie today to make decisions about the fifth starter and left field. The “unnamed” source close to the situation says that it’s likely that Mike Pelfrey will become the fifth starter despite his shaky spring. He’ll have a short leash with El Duque and Jorge Sosa ready to jump into the rotation if things go wrong.

According to the source, Angel Pagan has the inside track to get the bulk of playing time in left field until Moises Alou gets back approximately three weeks into the season. Pagan has been on fire offensively this spring but it may be an anomaly. Only time will tell.

Angel Pagan In Left Field… I Don’t Think So

Angel Pagan

The Mets beat writers and blogsphere self-regarded experts are beginning to anoint Angel Pagan as the Mets opening day left fielder. While Pagan is having an incredible spring, it’s not like we’ve never seen a March phenom before. You can see all of the Mets spring training statistics here.

Let’s not forget that Pagan has only two years of major league experience with the Cubs. His career numbers are: 148 games 318 AB’s .255 BA 9 HR 39 RBI 8 SB’s Continue reading “Angel Pagan In Left Field… I Don’t Think So”

Rumor: Angel Pagan Trade for Coco Crisp

Ed Coleman of WFAN reported the rumor that the Mets were working on a deal with the Red Sox for Coco Crisp for Angel Pagan. This move doesn’t make any sense to me. The Mets don’t need another light-hitting defensive outfielder. They already have two: Angel Pagan and Endy Chavez. The Mets need a corner outfielder/first baseman with a little pop in his bat.

Cubs Deal Precursor to Another Trade?

You may have seen that the Mets reacquired Angel Pagan from the Cubs today. He was sent to the Cubs two years ago for cash. The Mets traded two minor leaguers to get him back.

This could very well be a precursor to another deal in my opinion. Having Pagan back could give the Mets the flexibility they need to trade Carlos Gomez.

The outfield is pretty crowded now with Beltan, Alou, Church, Gomez, Chavez, and Pagan. They all won’t be on the 25 man roster.

I’m thinking this frees up the Mets to move Gomez + to the Twins for Santana. We’ll see…
