Met Game 9/29/10
A Sparse Crowd Watches the Mets Lose Both Games of a Doubleheader

Yesterday’s double header was double trouble for the Mets.

Game 1 – Brewers 8, Mets 7
Game2 – Brewers 3, Mets 1

Game 1 was practically given away to the Brewers with Jon Niese giving up 6 runs in the 3rd inning. The Brewers, not to be outdone, allowed the Mets right back into the game by giving up 2 runs in the 3rd and 5 runs in the 4th to briefly give the Mets the lead 7-6. The Mets gave that lead right back by allowing 2 runs in the 8th and that was all the scoring for the game as the Brewers defeated the Mets by a score of 8-7.

New York used 8 pitchers in the first game because soon to be ex-Mets Manager, Jerry Manuel, could care less. He’s out of here in a few days. Niese started the game and went a full 2.2 innings followed by Ryota Igarashi, Raul Valdes, Sean Green, Elmer Dessens, Pedro Feliciano, Manny Acosta & finally, Hisanori Takahashi.

Game 2 featured a pitching matchup of Dickey vs Bush. No this is not a typo and Twitter users certainly caught the double entendre. R.A. Dickey, the new Mets ace, gave up 6 hits in 7 innings but only allowed 1 earned run. He still took the loss in the nightcap as the Mets offense was completely overpowered when the Brewers trotted out the way past his prime, all time saves leader, Trevor Hoffman, who pitched the 9th to earn his 601st save of his career. Note the Brewers regular closer, John Axford, was not available to close because he was used in Game 1.

Mercifully the season is over in 4 days.

Injury Update: Carlos Beltran is out for the rest of the season due to “Mild Inflammation” in his right knee (What’s New?) and Nick Evans injured his left, non-throwing, shoulder.

Marlins 5 – Mets 2, September 21, 2010 – Mets Mathematically Eliminated from the Wild Card

May 28, 2010- Milwaukee, WI. Miller Park..New York Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey ..Milwaukee Brewers won over the New York Mets 2-0, taking the first game of the 3 game series against the Mets...Mike McGinnis / CSM.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIf you missed it, and most people did, the Mets lost to the Marlins last night by a score of 5-2.

Although the Mets have not been a part of this pennant race for at least 6 weeks, they were finally mathematically eliminated from the wild card very quietly in front of a crowd of maybe 500 people. Mike Pelfrey pitched another good game giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits in 7 innings but the Mets offense, which actually managed 11 hits, couldn’t generate any run support aside from 2 solo homers, 1 each by Lucas Duda and David Wright. Sloppy plays by Wright and Jose Reyes in the 7th resulted in back to back errors and the Mets went quietly in the 9th to be mathematically eliminated yet again while playing the Marlins.

It’s been almost relaxing to watch these last Met games knowing they are absolutely meaningless games, especially from here on out. It’s also comforting to know that there are finally going to be significant changes this offseason.

The changes that I have been hoping would happen last winter are now well overdue. A new GM and new manager really should have been done last winter. This winter a new GM can start entertaining trades for the clubhouse cancers http://www.honeytraveler.com/pharmacy/ Carlos Beltran and Luis Castillo, attempt to drop a few bad contracts like Oliver Perez and K-Rod and really explore options for Wright and Reyes. If we can get some value for them, great. If not, build an entirely new team around them. Mets 9 – Pirates 1 September 14, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got another great start from R.A. Dickey. He continues to surprise me with every start. I really thought he was a fluke. Tonight he threw a complete game 5- hitter and almost had a shutout, only giving up 1 run in the ninth.

The Mets offense lit up Zack Duke big time for 9 hits in 3.1 innings. They scored all 9 runs in the first four innings of the game. Carlos Beltran and Nick Evans homered in the game. Angel Pagan was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s as well.

The Mets take the first two of the four game series against the lowly Pirates. It looks like the Mets finally found a team they can match up with.

Phillies 8 – Mets 4 September 10, 2010

April 22 2010: Mets' relief pitcher Jenrry Mejia (32) delivers a pitch in the 9th inning during MLB action between the New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Mets defeated the Cubs 5-2.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsIt was another disappointing start for Jenrry Mejia getting rocked by the Phillies for 6 runs in 4 innings. The Phils just put together hit after hit against him. And Ryan Howard crushed a line drive homer over the wall in left field. I haven’t seen an opposite field home run like that at Citi Field.

The Mets did have a little offense going with 10 hits and 4 runs. Carlos Beltran even hit his first home run of the year left-handed. Josh Thole was 3 for 4 but had a bonehead play on the bases getting caught in a run down between third and home.

The Mets drop the first game of the series.

Mets Should Part Ways With Carlos Beltran

July 23, 2010 Los Angeles, CA..Mets Carlos Beltran in action during the Major League Baseball game between the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Mets defeated the Dodgers, 6-1..Josh Thompson/CSM.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThis week’s saga of three Mets skipping the teams appearance at a local hospital is just another negative story that has surrounded Carlos Beltran and the New York Mets this season.

In case you haven’t heard, Luis Castillo, Oliver Perez and Carlos Beltran all skipped a visit to the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C.

David Wright had a thought about that “You’d Like to see everybody. I don’t think it’s big enough until you get everybody.

Still some Met fans don’t see the big deal. The visit to the hospital wasn’t mandatory but however you slice it the visit or non-visit by the three Mets is a distraction in what has a terrible season.

For Beltran his behavior has been uncalled for, for a while now. Many fans and people in the front office still don’t understand why the center fielder waited until February to get surgery on his knee when he knew about it since October. Continue reading “Mets Should Part Ways With Carlos Beltran”

Cubs 5 – Mets 3 September 4, 2010

Apr 13, 2010 - Denver, Colorado, USA - MLB Baseball - New York Mets reliever JENRRY MEJIA throws during a 3-11 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsJenrry Mejia made his first career big league start and it was a major disappointment. He didn’t get bombed but he didn’t look good either. He had Mike Nickeas catching for him in his Major League debut and the two of them looked befuddled. They should have had Henry Blanco catching for Mejia to keep him in check. Mejia threw way too many breaking balls and change-up’s for a 20 year old power pitcher. I was scratching my head wondering what they’re thinking about calling pitches.

The Mets offense was incredibly weak again with only 6 hits and 3 walks especially on a day when the wind was blowing out at Wrigley. The only notable games were from Carlos Beltran (3 for 4, SB) and Ike Davis (2 for 4, HR). Other than that it was a continuation of one of the saddest offenses in baseball.

The Mets drop the second game and lose the series in Chicago. Tomorrow they’ll be trying to avoid the sweep again. What else would you expect?

Mets 4 – Braves 2 September 2, 2010

New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana delivers a pitch to the Philadelphia Phillies during the first inning of their National League MLB baseball game in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 7, 2010. REUTERS/Tim Shaffer (UNITED STATES - Tags: SPORT BASEBALL)

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe big news is that Johan Santana left the game after the fifth inning with a strained pectoral muscle. He was cruising along pretty well too only allowing 1 run. I’m sure we’ll hear more about how serious it is over the coming days. With the expanded roster and no postseason hopes, Santana may not be seen again until next spring training.

The bullpen did a nice job of holding the Braves to 1 unearned run over the final four innings. Speaking of unearned runs, Joaquin Arias looked pretty shaky at shortstop tonight making one error and another poor throw that could have been a second error.

The offense had 8 hits and 3 walks generating the 4 runs which is an explosion for this sad bunch. David Wright hit a solo homer off Tim Hudson, his 22nd of the season. And Carlos Beltran hit a triple and scored on an overthrow. He still looks like he lost step or two even though he was able to leg out a triple.

The Mets avoid the embarrassment of a sweep by taking the final game of the four game series.
