Mets Beat Sloppy Padres 7-2 April 15, 2009

Oliver Perez did a great job tonight going 6 innings with 1 run on 3 hits and 2 BB’s. It’s amazing how different he can be from start to start. He threw a lot more changeup’s than he has in the past. And I noticed that he wasn’t rocking his upper body in the “bowing” motion that he started last season. Clearly, he’s still trying to figure things out. Hopefully, he’s got something that works now.

The Mets took advantage of some extremely sloppy play by the Padres in the seventh inning scoring four runs. The Padres were throwing the ball around the infield like little leaguers. The two walks and an infield hit didn’t help things either.

Carlos Delgado hit one out to the overhang porch in right field for his 471st career homer. Gary Sheffield got his first start in right field. It was pretty uneventful going 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored.

Daniel Murphy was absolutely brutal in left field blowing two plays. The league has already caught on to his defensive liability. The Padres were running on him in unusual situations. He also botched the easiest play he could make, he couldn’t even throw to home plate on a runner that was trying to score from second. He’s got no arm out there at all.

The Mets go to 4-4 on the season.

Mets Edge Reds 9-7 April 8, 2009

PHOENIX, AZ - May 6: Mike Pelfrey #34 of the ...
Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Mike Pelfrey started the game terribly throwing 44 pitches in the first inning, laboring to find the strike zone. It didn’t help that Angel Hernandez was behind the plate tonight either. The Reds put up four runs in the first, notably on a 3-run homer by Joey Votto, the young Reds first baseman.

The Mets got two runs in the first inning as well on a 2-run shot by Carlos Delgado. The Mets offensive hero of the night was Delgado who had four RBI’s on the night.

Pelfrey only last five innings which turned out to be just enough to get the win. The bullpen stumbled a bit as well. Bobby Parnell gave up two walks but no runs in his inning of work. Pedro Feliciano got hit in the seventh, giving up two runs in .2 innings. Even J.J. Putz gave up a run in the eighth. And Francisco Rodriguez reminded me of last season’s bullpen disasters by loading the bases in the ninth inning on two walks and a questionable error on Delgado. Fortunately, he got out of the inning unscathed which was a nice change from last season.

The Mets go to 2-0 on the season and get things going early tomorrow with a 12:35 pm game time.

Mets Tatis Comeback Player Of The Year

Mets outfielder Fernando Tatis received a well-deserved award this week from the Major League Baseball Players Association, the Comeback Player of the Year Award. His work in the outfield was a little shaky at times, but you can’t deny that his offense was fantastic. Tatis had more clutch hits this season than any player, including the guys that were out there every day.

Tatis’ line was awesome: 92 G| 273 AB| .297| .369| .484| 11 HR| 47 RBI| 123 OPS+. Compare that to Carlos Delgado’s OPS+ of 127.

Tatis was even more valuable to the Mets than expected with Moises Alou going down for the season again in May. There’s no way that Omar Minaya expected to get 273 AB’s out of Tatis when they brought him up to the majors. Hopefully, the free agent will sign a new deal with the Mets. If they signed Marlon Anderson last off-season to a two-year deal, they should certainly offer two years to Tatis.

Check out this Q&A that David Brown from Yahoo Sports did with Tatis.

Mets To Exercise Delgado’s Option

Omar Minaya announced that the Mets will excercise the one year option on Carlos Delgado’s contract for 2009. The option is for $12 million as opposed to the $4 million buyout they would have had to pay Delgado. Effectively, they’re getting Delgado for $8 million for the season.

If Delgado continues to be motivated under Jerry Manuel next season, it’s a great deal. You wouldn’t find another first baseman on the market with numbers like Delgado’s for that price. This season he hit .271 38 HR 115 RBI. And that was after doing nothing for the first 2.5 months under Willie Randolph.

The only other viable options in free agency were Mark Texeira and Jason Giambi. I’m sure the Wilpon’s don’t have the stomach for another player with a monster contract on the Mets like Texeira will command. And Giambi probably doesn’t have that many good years left in him.

Mets Lose Critical Game To Cubs 9-6 In 10 Innings

The Mets lost a see-saw battle in 10 innings on an RBI single by Derrek Lee and a two-run homer by Aramis Ramirez off Luis Ayala.

The Mets had great momentum with a grand slam by Carlos Delgado in the 3rd inning and coming back to tie the game in the eighth on a bases loaded walk by Ramon Martinez. Martinez had a really nice game in the field and at the plate.

The Mets end up tied for the Wild Card lead with the Brewers and only have four games left. That was a really tough loss.

Mets Bullpen May Be Their Undoing

It’s become almost impossible for me to watch the Mets now. And this should be the most exciting time of the season. We’re right in the playoff hunt and there’s only one week left in the regular season. The Phillies and Brewers have had their own problems at various times this season. The Mets are better than both of them, or they should be.

At the All-Star break I would’ve told you that if the Mets don’t make the playoffs in 2008 it’s because Carlos Delgado can’t hit anymore or Moises Alou is injured again. But Delgado can, and has, hit and the left field combination of Daniel Murphy, Endy Chavez, Fernando Tatis, and Nick Evans has worked.

Now it’s readily apparent to every Mets fan that if the Mets don’t make the playoffs it’s the bullpen’s fault. Johan Santana should have 20+ wins right now. He’s been victimized more than anyone save the fans. And the bullpen may cost Jerry Manuel a well-deserved shot at managing this team for the next three or four years.

Take a look at the Mets statistics in releif appearances this season. But don’t look at it right after eating. You might lose your lunch. If you go to MLB.com, click Stats, then select the Mets, pitching stats, in relief appearances you’ll see all of the Mets relief appearance stats and it isn’t a pretty sight.

I won’t even single anyone in the bullpen out because they’ve all been so bad. It’s time to move Bobby Parnell to the top of the heap. Could he be worse than what we’ve already seen? I don’t think so.
