Padres 18 – Mets 6 May 31, 2010

New York Mets vs Atlanta Braves

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsI can’t remember seeing so many pitchers get hit so hard as the Mets did last night. Hisanori Takahashi finally got hit after two great starts. He gave up a grand slam in the second inning to Jerry Hairston, Jr. and it was all downhill from there. The bullpen came in to help him out and gave up 12 MORE runs! It was unbelievable.

The Mets had some decent offense with 8 hits and 5 walks scoring 6 runs. Rod Barajas hit his 11th homer of the season. But this game was a laugher right from the start, the Mets were out of it.

Hisanori Takahashi (4-1 2.13) vs Kevin Correia (4-4 4.03)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Padres start a three game series in San Diego tonight. Takahashi has been outstanding in his first two starts. He hasn’t allowed a run in 12 IP to the Yankees and Phillies. Correia has been up and down this season and hasn’t gotten a win in his last four starts despite the Padres playing very well. You’ve probably heard that his younger brother died at 23 years old in a hiking accident recently. It’s amazing that he’s been able to keep it together as well as he has.

Mets 5 – Phillies 0 May 26, 2010

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets shut out the Phillies again tonight behind the second strong start of Hisanori Takahashi. He went 6 IP giving up only 5 hits and no walks. Granted, the Phillies aren’t doing anything on offense right now. But it’s still a good start for Takahashi. His season ERA is down to 2.13 after tonight.

The Mets made the most of their runners on offense. They only had 7 hits and 4 walks but managed to put up 5 runs. Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan had 2 hits apiece, including Reyes’ first homer of the season. And Pagan and Luis Castillo had 2 stolen bases each. Rod Barajas came through again with 3 RBI’s on a 1 for 3 night with a big double and a sac fly.

You could say the best thing about these two games is shutting out the Phillies, but I think the hot offense of Reyes is the biggest sign of good things to come.

Joe Blanton (1-2 5.06) vs Hisanori Takahashi (3-1 2.53)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets go for their fourth straight win tonight and a chance to go above .500. Takahashi threw 6 shutout innings in a loss to the Yankees in his last start. Blanton has been getting hit in his four starts this year. But the Phillies have won two of the four games. His last start was pretty good against the Cubs going 7 IP and giving up 3 ER.

Yankees 2 – Mets 1 May 21, 2010

New York Mets starting pitcher Hisanori Takahashi throws a pitch to the New York Yankees in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsI have to admit that I was shocked that Hisanori Takahashi had a great start going 6 shutout innings. I never would have expected that. He was really outstanding especially considering that he got no run support.

Speaking of run support, the Mets had absolutely no offense again. Last night’s 10 run outburst seems like a mirage. They only put together 4 hits as a team and two of them were in the ninth inning when Jason Bay singled and Ike Davis doubled him in. That was the offense. Don’t blink or you might miss it.

Alex Cora blew the game in the seventh inning for the Mets. His costly throwing error allowed an unearned run to score that would have made a difference in the game.

The Mets and Yankees will play two more on national TV this weekend.

Javier Vazquez (2-4 8.01) vs Hisanori Takahashi (3-1 3.12)

TV: SNY, YES   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Yankees are playing well this season but just got swept in a two game series by the Rays. Vazquez hasn’t pitched very well at all this year after he was nearly untouchable last season with the Braves. Takahashi is making his first career start coming out of the bullpen.

John Maine Situation Leaves Rotation A Mess

NEW YORK - APRIL 26: John Maine #33 of the New...

The mystery injury to John Maine last night leaves the Mets starting rotation in a bigger mess than we thought it was already. And it couldn’t come at a worse time for Jerry Manuel. Many of us already have a death watch on his managerial career. Of course, injuries aren’t his fault but he needs some good things to happen soon.

R.A. Dickey and Hisanori Takahashi are already in the rotation. That’s something we never would have thought before the season. With Maine appearing to be out for some period of time, we might be looking at another call-up from Triple-A Buffalo. Fortunately, Pat Misch and Dillon Gee have been pitching pretty well. But at this rate there won’t be anybody left in Buffalo.

To be left with Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey before the end of May is just a nightmare. I think with Jon Niese injured and Maine possibly hurt, we may need to re-visit the issue of the Mets medical and training staff. It doesn’t seem possible that this many players could be hurt within two seasons. The Mets chose not to change the medical and training staff after the 2009 “season of the injury” and we may be headed down that road again.
