Mets Take Series From Giants With 5-3 Win
The Mets took two out of three in San Francisco from the Giants before leaving for San Diego today. John Maine looked good going six strong innings giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk for his seventh win. He also had four strikeouts. Jose Reyes let one go under his glove for his tenth error to allow the unearned run.
Duaner Sanchez pitched the seventh and eighth innings allowing one run. He did have a scare in the eighth inning when Bengie Molina hit one to the wall with two men on.
Reyes was the offensive star of the game going 3 for 4 with his eighth home run and a stolen base, his 19th of the season.

What to watch: After the triumphant return of Pedro Martinez last night, John Maine tries to finish off the series win with a victory today. The Mets really should take a series from a team as bad as the Giants, even if it is on the road. Look for some of the veterans to get a day off for a day game after night game. I like the way the bench players have been going this season, so I don’t expect much of a drop off.
Dodgers Over Mets 9-5; Win Streak Stopped At Three
John Maine wasn’t impressive tonight giving up three runs in the first inning. He did settle down and make it through six innings but it was a rocky start.
Luis Castillo left the game after turning a double play and the early word is that he has a strained hip flexor. I can’t believe we still have 3.5 more years of him with the Mets.
Russell Martin killed the Mets tonight going 4 for 4 with 3 runs and 3 RBI’s. The Dodgers 20 year old starter Clayton Kershaw wasn’t great tonight in his second big league start. But you can see that he’s got some talent with a good fastball and big 12-6 curve.
The game got out of hand due to Aaron Heilman once again. He had a few good outings but reverted back tonight giving up four runs without getting an out on four straight hits. Overall it was an ugly game for the Mets pitchers.

On Deck: May 30- Dodgers At Mets
Los Angeles Dodgers (26-27) at New York Mets (26-26) 7:10pm
Clayton Kershaw (0-0) vs. John Maine (5-4)
What to watch: Kershaw is a 20 year old lefty with a mid-90’s fastball and a nasty curveball. I sure hope Delgado is on the bench again tonight. He has no chance of hitting this guy. Maine went a solid six innings in his last start in Colorado despite taking the loss. This game looks like a pitching duel to me.
Cook Four Hits Mets For 4-1 Win
The Mets lose another road series on the eve of Willie Randolph’s meeting with ownership in New York. The Mets have now lost 6 of their last 7 games and looked completely uninspired today making two ugly errors in the field and more baserunning problems.
Aaron Cook went through the Mets like a buzzsaw today giving up only four hits and one walk over nine innings.
John Maine wasn’t particularly good but kept the Mets in the game. He went six innings giving up four runs (three earned). That should be enough to keep the Mets in the game in Colorado.
Jose Reyes let a ball go through his legs with a man on first that would have been a double play. That led to a three run homer by Seth Smith in the fourth inning and that was all that the Colorado Rockies needed today.
Reyes was also picked off first. The second time in this series that he’s been picked off. He’s playing like his head is in the clouds.
Carlos Delgado also had an ugly error at first base. For both Reyes and Delgado it was their sixth error of the season.
The Mets head home tonight to begin a three game series with division leader Florida Marlins.
On Deck: May 25- Mets At Rockies
New York Mets (23-24) at Colorado Rockies (19-30) 3:05pm
John Maine (5-3) vs. Aaron Cook (6-3)
What to watch: The Mets have a chance to win the rubber game of the series in Colorado today. Maine’s last start on Tuesday was forgettable. Otherwise, he’s had a good season. I think that we’d all like to see Nick Evans in the lineup again today after his monster Major League debut yesterday. Willie Randolph would feel much better about his meeting with the Wilpons tomorrow if he went in off winning the road series in Colorado.
