Rockies Drop Mets 6-5 In 13 Innings

A lot happened for the Mets in this game and today:

  • Willie Randolph may be on the verge of being fired
  • Omar Minaya showed up in Colorado and gave Willie cautious support
  • Gary Carter threw his hat in the ring to become the next Mets manager
  • Marlon Anderson left the game with what appeared to be an injured hamstring
  • Billy Wagner blew his second save of the season, and gave up his first earned run of the season to send the game to extra innings
  • Jose Reyes inexplicably got picked off second base after hitting a double in the tenth inning
  • More inexplicably, Yorvit Torrealba got caught trying to steal third in the bottom of the tenth inning; he’s overzealous in his attempt at revenge on the Mets for not signing him this off-season
  • Oliver Perez walked eight batters but managed to pitch into the sixth inning
  • Scott Schoenweiss looked good for two innings
  • Aaron Heilman takes the loss in his second inning of work
  • The Mets lose their fifth straight game

The losing continues for another day. At least Omar Minaya is in Colorado to figure out what exactly is going wrong for this team. I’m sure that we’ll hear a lot more about this when the team gets back to New York. Hopefully, the Mets won’t embarrass themselves on regional Fox coverage of the game tomorrow.

Maine, Mets Clobber Dodgers 12-1

The story of the day was John Maine returning to his spring training form. He went 8.1 innings and carried a shutout into the ninth. That was the longest start by a Mets pitcher this season and a nice break for the bullpen with an off-day tomorrow.

Ryan church again was in the middle of the offense with another home run. Even Maine came through with a hit and two RBI’s. There was tons of offense by the Mets as you would guess by the final score. I don’t think it was coincidence that Carlos Delgado was out of the lineup and Marlon Anderson played first base. The lineup has a better flow when Delgado’s not in the middle.

The Mets come back to Shea on Friday night against the Reds after having a 3-3 road trip. If they can play .500 on the road that’s just fine, especially on the West coast.

Mets Take Series From D-Backs With 5-2 Win

There wasn’t a lot of hitting today which was no surprise with Johan Santana and Dan Haren matching up. David Wright had the only homer of the game, which was one of only six Mets hits on the day.

Connor Jackson made a huge throwing error in the ninth inning that opened the door for the Mets to score three runs and win the game. Marlon Anderson had a big pinch hit RBI single in the ninth.

Johan Santana gutted through six innings giving up only one run. We still haven’t seen his best stuff yet. But I love the way he always keeps the Mets in the game. He never lets a game completely get away from him. It’s easy to see why he’s one of the best pitchers in the game.

This was a huge win today and will hopefully propel the Mets. Going into Arizona and taking a series from the team with the best record in the league has to be a big confidence builder for the Mets. That was a great game going right down to the ninth inning, maybe the best game of the year so far.

Mets Defeat Brew Crew 4-2 Behind Figueroa

New York- Nelson Figueroa made his first start for the Mets this season an impressive one. He went six strong innings giving up two runs, two hits, and two walks with six strikeouts for the win.

The bullpen took over for Figueroa and did a great job for the final three innings. Joe Smith, Aaron Heilman, and Billy Wagner shut the Brewers down without giving up a hit.

The offense, as usual, was powered by Angel Pagan. He continued his hot hitting going 2 for 4 with another RBI raising his season average to .387.

There is some concern that Jose Reyes left the game with a tight hamstring. Marlon Anderson came in to play second, and Damion Easley moved to shortstop replacing Reyes.
