D-Backs 9- Mets 6 July 30, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsMike Pelfrey just hasn’t been able to get it together once again tonight. He went 5.2 innings and gave up 4 earned runs on 8 hits and 4 walks. The umpire behind the plate was pretty bad with one of the smallest strike zones I’ve seen in a while. That certainly didn’t help.

Surprisingly, Pelfrey wasn’t the worst pitcher of the night for the Mets. Raul Valdes had his worst game as a Met giving up 4 runs without recording an out in the sixth. He gave up two homers and had absolutely nothing. It was a surprise because he’s been so good with what doesn’t appear to be great stuff.

The bright spot of the night was David Wright going 3 for 4 with two homers in his first two at-bats. Those homers resulted in 5 RBI’s tonight for him.

This is the Mets fourth straight loss to the horrible D-Backs team. They need to toughen up and get some payback this weekend.

Ian Kennedy (5-8 4.10) vs Mike Pelfrey (10-5 4.00)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The D-Backs come to town on a six game losing streak after sweeping the Mets in Arizona. Kennedy got a loss in his last start against the Giants giving up 4 runs in 6.2 IP. He did beat the Mets in his prior start giving up1 run over 5 IP in that game. Pelfrey hasn’t won a game since June 25 and looks like he’s just run out of gas. He needs to get it together quickly if the Mets have any shot at the postseason this year.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got a fair start from Mike Pelfrey going 5 innings and allowing 2 runs. That’s a major upgrade from his most recent starts. The Mets bullpen took over and threw 5+ shutout innings for Pelfrey and the game went to 13 innings tied 2-2.

The Mets offense was pretty weak with 9 hits and 4 walks over the 13 inning span. Jose Reyes and Jason Bay were both 2 for 5 in the game. But the only extra base hits were doubles by Ike Davis and Luis Castillo. Angel Pagan did have two steals in the game.

Rod Barajas left the game with a strained oblique muscle suffered during an at-bat. Oddly, it was a hit which he hasn’t had many of lately.

Oliver Perez blew the game in the 13th allowing a home run to James Loney. It’s gotten to the point where he can’t do anything right for this team. His new role as lefty specialist isn’t working out so well when he gives up a walk off homer to a lefty on a tough road trip.

Mike Pelfrey (10-5 4.01) vs Carlos Monasterios (3-2 3.61)

TV: FOX   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets finally got a win last night and have a chance to take control of this series and possibly redeem themselves for an awful road trip this afternoon. Unfortunately, they have to do it behind Pelfrey who has just been dreadful. He hasn’t had a good start since the middle of June and appears to be getting worse with every start. He gave up 6 runs in 1.1 innings in Arizona in his last start. Monasterios has been working long relief for the Dodgers. He hasn’t started a game since he got rocked on June 18 by the Red Sox. We could see an offensive explosion by both teams today.

My Mets Rant After a Week to Forget

Angry Arsenal Fans after Emmanuel Adebayor's 3rd goal Celebration Arsenal 2009/10 Manchester City V Arsenal (4-2) 12/09/09 The Premier League Photo Robin Parker Fotosports International

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsSo far in the second half of this season, the bad has far out-weighed the good in Mets land. The team has lost 6 of 8 and is currently 4 games out of the wild card spot while trailing the Braves by 6.5 games in the NL East. Jason Bay, despite valiant offensive and defensive contributions in Friday night’s 6-1 win against the Dodgers, is giving fans reason to believe he is a bust. The team has won 4 of 15, all 4 of those wins have been started by ace Johan Santana who everyone (including myself) was writing off prior to the break. Mike Pelfrey has seen his ERA inflate to 4 and hasn’t been the same since Father’s Day weekend at Yankee Stadium. Carlos Beltran has returned quietly. He looks capable at bat, although he is still adjusting. However, not surprisingly, he does not appear to possess the same spring in his step as he has in years past roaming center field. With all this said, and more, this team somehow still finds itself in the mix for a playoff spot.

The San Francisco and Arizona series were extremely painful to watch. The team traveled to the West coast with no vigor, no fight. Instead of making a statement, they were embarrassed, and should have been swept by a solid Giants club, then went to the desert and bowed to Barry Enright and the last place Diamondbacks in a 3 straight. The managing was questionable, the execution was lackluster, and the heart was non-existent. The team looked dead on their feet. The 2009 New York Mets appeared to have been reborn. Mets’ Mike Pelfrey- Too Many Foul Balls?

NEW YORK - JUNE 11: Mike Pelfrey #34 of the N...

I’m preparing myself for another horrible start from Mike Pelfrey today. In 2010, Pelfrey has been atrocious on the road to the tune of 4-3 with a 5.21 ERA. Opposing hitter are feasting on him for a .333 average versus .267 at home. Get ready for another nightmare on national TV this afternoon. As a matter of fact, July 2010 has been a nightmare for Pelfrey so far going 0-3 with a 15.30 ERA.

Pat Andriola of Fangraphs did an interesting analysis of Pelfrey after his last disaster of a start in Arizona. The conclusion was that Pelfrey is walking more batters recently, striking out fewer, and batters are hitting more foul balls. He’s not getting the swings and misses that he was early in the season.

Basically, Pelfrey is having a tough time putting away hitters, leading to more foul balls, which has driven his Strike% up. Although it’s only been four starts from Pelfrey, and that in and of itself can’t tell us much, we do have 367 pitches worth of data from which to glean something. Baseball information doesn’t have to be measured just in innings or at-bats; each pitch can tell us a whole lot (just ask Dave Allen or Jeremy Greenhouse).

With some players, like Pelfrey, there’s some unquantifiable element to their game that just doesn’t translate to statistical analysis. Although I like Andriola’s post, I think Pelfrey has a combination of two problems. He ran out of gas or had a “dead arm” period and he started getting down on himself when he wasn’t getting hitters our so easily. One of the things that stands out to me about top of the line pitchers is their ability to limit runs when they’re giving up hit and walks or what you’d call “fighting through” a lack of good stuff. In my mind, that’s Pelfrey’s problem. He isn’t bearing down and getting through five innings with limited damage when he doesn’t have his best stuff.

Mike Pelfrey (10-4 3.58) vs Ian Kennedy (4-7 4.12)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and D-Backs start up a three game series tonight in the desert. The D-Backs just got swept in San Diego and have lost 5 of their last 6 games. They’re having just an awful season. Kennedy has been okay this season but the team has lost 4 of the last 5 games he started. Pelfrey is finally starting after missing his turn in the rotation because of a stiff neck. The Mets have lost the last 2 games he started and he’s really in a bad part of the season after a terrific start.
