Santana Loses Again As Yankees Win 3-2

image Johan Santana takes another hard luck loss today. He has to be wondering why he came to this team that has no offense. The Mets attack consisted of two solo homers, one by Ramon Castro and the other by David Wright.

Santana ( 7-7) wasn’t terrible but wasn’t great either. He went six innings giving up three runs on four hits and four walks, but he did have eight strikeouts. His ERA increased to 3.03 for the season.

Jose Reyes demonstrated again that he has no concept of situational strategy. He was on second base with Damion Easley on first. David Wright was at the plate with two outs. Inexplicably, Reyes gets picked off second base by Andy Pettite leaning toward third base. There’s no reason for him to be going for third base with two outs and David Wright hitting with two runners on base. It makes no sense. This is a situation that needs to be addressed by Jerry Manuel. High school players know enough not to do that. Reyes can’t have the “green light” to run anytime. He clearly doesn’t understand the game well enough to have that responsibility.

Brian Schneider X-Rays Negative

New York Mets catcher Brian Schneider was beat up badly by the Colorado Rockies last night. Not in a brawl but by foul balls, three of them. One in particular bounced off his left wrist and caused him to be replaced in the game by Robinson Cancel. The x-rays came back negative and Schneider is now listed as day-to-day. I would have to think that Ramon Castro will get a start this afternoon.

Alou Back To Disabled List

Moises Alou lasted one game in left field before going back on the disabled list with a strained calf muscle. Robinson Cancel was recalled to from Triple-A New Orleans to replace him on the roster.

I still can’t understand why they’re going with three catchers. The only way this makes sense is if they use Ramon Castro as a pinch hitter to take advantage of the offense he brings to the table. But they haven’t been doing that.

Wagner Blows Third Straight Save; Mets Lose To D-Backs 5-4 in 10 Innings

Another great game by Johan Santana was wasted today. He went seven shutout innings giving up three hits and three walks with ten strikeouts. Joe Smith was terrible in the eighth inning giving up two walks and two hits in .2 innings. Two runs scored on him.

Billy Wagner blew the save in the ninth inning allowing two runs to score on two hits and two walks. Then Aaron Heilman threw gas on the fire in the tenth inning. Justin Upton doubled off him, moved to third on a sacrifice, then scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Mets offense came on a solo homer by Ramon Castro in the second inning off Dan Haren. David Wright doubled in Endy Chavez in the third inning but was thrown out going for third base. Fernando Tatis hit a two run single in the seventh inning.

The Mets lose the home series to the struggling D-Backs and have the Texas Rangers coming to town for a weekend series.

Padres Complete Sweep of Mets With 8-6 Win

Tony Clark’s pinch hit, three run homer off Billy Wagner in the bottom of the eighth inning capped a sweep for the Padres. With two men on, Willie Randolph brought in closer Wagner for a four out save. That also turned switch hitter Tony Clark to his right side, much weaker hitting than his left. But Tony Clark came through with a bomb to center field that won the game.

Pedro Martinez had a bad start today going five innings and allowing four runs. He gave up ten hits during the start and looks like an old pitcher whose career is running on fumes.

Surprisingly, Carlos Delgado had his second straight three hit game including a triple. He hadn’t hit a triple since 2006. But his effort was wasted again as the Mets continue to find new ways to lose.

Ramon Castro was scheduled to start at catcher but overslept and showed up an hour before the game at the stadium. Randolph benched and fined him. Raul Casanova started in his place.

Mets, Santana Over Marlins 5-3

Johan Santana (6-3) got the win tonight going seven innings giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks, while recording seven strikeouts. The Mets sorely needed a win after losing seven of their last eight games. Santana comes through…

The lineup was juggled a bit tonight with Carlos Delgado riding the pine and Damion Easley getting a start at first base. Easley contributed with a 1 for 3 night, scored a run, and had an RBI. It was nice to see a Mets first baseman putting the ball in play and making an offensive contribution.

Fernando Tatis, getting a start in right field, went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s. Ramon Castro also went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s. The bench players came up big tonight.

The Mets close the gap a little with the first place Marlins by cutting their lead down to 5.5 games.
