Mets File MLB Complaint About Doubleheaders

The Mets and Braves were rained out in Atlanta last night and the Braves decided to schedule a doubleheader for 4pm today. It’s the home team’s decision how to reschedule a rain out. Despite the fact that the Mets visit Atlanta two more times this year, the Braves opted for a doubleheader today after the Mets played a doubleheader against Colorado on Thursday.

The Mets had to use seven relievers to get through the doubleheader against Colorado. Chris Young is still questionable for his start on Sunday. He couldn’t make the start last night, if the Mets played, because of bicep tendinitis. The concern is that if he starts the game tomorrow and has to bail out early, the bullpen won’t have anyone left available to pitch.

Assistant GM John Ricco is traveling with the team in Atlanta. He met with Dan Warthen, Young, Ray Ramirez, and Terry Collins last night when the rain out was announced to discuss the situation. He and Young spoke to reporters after the meeting which you can hear below.

Mets Swept, Drop Doubleheader to Rockies

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 08: Manager Terry Collin...

In a frightening twist to the early season, the Mets were swept at home by the Rockies including the rare feat of being swept at home in a doubleheader. They’ve now lost five straight games and eight of nine. It’s some of the worst baseball I’ve seen in years and that’s saying something for the Mets.

R.A. Dickey got roughed up for 5 runs in 5.1 innings in the first game, a 6-5 loss. And Chris Capuano was rocked for 7 runs in 5.2 innings in the second game today. None of the Mets pitchers could get Troy Tulowitzki out. He was a one-man wrecking ball hitting homers in all four games.

I can’t even go into greater detail about this series without making myself feel sick. It’s only April and it feels like the season is over, that there’s nothing to look forward to this summer. If I go into detail about the Mets sloppy outfield play letting balls drop in front (or behind) them it will drive me crazy.

Terry Collins had a closed door meeting to chew out the players after their Wed. night loss. He obviously played that card too early. It didn’t do any good as they went out and got destroyed in a doubleheader today. It’s just ugly right now.

Video: Mets Weekly Report on Pelfrey, Collins, Warthen

In this week’s episode of the the Mets Weekly Report with Kerel Cooper of On The Black, we talk about the first week of games in Florida, Philly, and home against the Nationals. Specifically, we get into Mike Pelfrey getting boo’d during player introductions on opening day. Kerel was at the game and said that K-Rod got the loudest boo’s and then Pelf got plenty as well.

We also talk about an article in the Bergen Record this week that Terry Collins time may be short with the Mets. That may be true but can we give the guy more than a week before we start writing him off?

The last segment is about the under-performing pitching staff. Dan Warthen needs to get these guys going quickly. The Mets have the second worst team ERA in the National League. Only the Astros are worse.

Check out the video below and leave your comments on the state of the Mets this week.

Video: Mets Terry Collins on First Road Trip of 2011

Mets manager Terry Collins reflects on the first road trip of the 2011 season. He’s talking to reporters after the Mets took an 11-0 beating from Roy Halladay and the Phillies. The Mets finished the road trip at 3-3 and showed some signs of life at times during the trip.

But the Mets also had two complete stinkers from Mike Pelfrey on the trip. Pelf also indicated that he didn’t like the pitch selection from Josh Thole in his second start in which Pelf couldn’t make it to the third inning. I also find it interesting when pitchers get rocked and blame it on the catcher. It doesn’t make any sense. If there’s any communication, that shouldn’t happen. Not to mention the fact that Pelf could have shaken him off at any time.

In this week’s installment of the weekly Mets Report video with Kerel Cooper of On The Black, we talk about our predictions for the Mets this year. The Vegas line is 77.5 wins this year and check out the video to see if we took the over or under.

Also this week, we talk about our first impressions of Terry Collins as the manager of the Mets. He had a terrible ending to his managerial stint in Anaheim and gets another (and probably final) chance with the Mets.

Mets’ Carlos Beltran Moves to Right Field

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 28: Carlos Beltran #15 ce...

Carlos Beltran told manager Terry Collins today that he would accept a move to right field so that Angel Pagan can take over center. Beltran is still slightly hobbled by the knee surgery he had just over a year ago. Although he played center field in the second half of last season, he really couldn’t move very well and was playing more on reputation than skill.

At first blush it seems like an altruistic move by Beltran. He puts the team first and moves out of the way for the young buck, Pagan. Apparently, Carlos Delgado and Scott Boras helped him come to this conclusion. You know if Boras is involved that there’s more to it than putting the team first.

I have to think that there’s a strategy here. Beltran said that he thinks he can still play center and if he had more time that he’d be able to get in shape to play a solid center field. Since this is a contract year for Beltran, I believe that this is a strategic move to maximize Beltran’s value for another contract.

Check out the video below to hear Beltran talking about the adjustments he’ll need to make switching from center to right field.
