Nationals 3 – Mets 1 July 22, 2009

The Mets look horrible right now. The game was preceded by Omar Minaya saying that the Mets are investigating bad behavior and poor judgment by Tony Bernazard.  Then the Mets go on to lose the game and the series to the lowly Nationals.

Mike Pelfrey recovered from his disasterous start in Atlanta to pitch a good game. He went 7 innings giving up only 3 runs.

Luis Castillo was ejected from the game for arguing a call at second base in the second inning. He bobbled the ball on a force out throw from David Wright. The ejection was very quick, so he must have said the magic word to the umpire.

As usual, the Mets had no offense. They only managed 4 hits in the game. The lineup they’re putting out there everyday now is so weak that they may end up falling below the Nationals in the standings before this season is over.

Mets VP Bernazard Challenges Prospects To Fight

Mets VP of Player Development Tony Bernazard has long been rumored to be the guy that went behind Willie Randolph’s back last season when he was fired. But now Adam Rubin of the Daily News reports that Bernazard screamed at the Double-A Binghamton team, then ripped his shirt off and challenged them to fight. You read that right… To a fight!

Bernazard is a 52 year-old man challenging a team mostly made up of kids in their late teens and early 20’s to fight. Sure, the B-Mets are a terrible team with a 37-58 record in last place in the Eastern League. The incident is said to have occurred just before the All-Star break.

When Mets GM Omar Minaya was asked about it, he said that Bernazard spoke to the team in a stern voice and that he was upset about underage drinking on the team among other issues.

Rubin goes on to recount a story that Bernazard blasted the Mets manager of baseball operations at Citi Field recently. Apparently, he wanted a seat that was occupied by a D-Backs scout. The employee told him to wait until the half-inning to make the seat change and that set Bernazard off.

We never hear much from Bernazard himself. Although he did interview, unsuccessfully, for the Seattle Mariners GM job during the off-season. But the more we hear about him, the more there is not to like.

Mets Bernazard Interviews In Seattle

The Seattle Mariners interviewed Mets VP of Player Development Tony Bernazard on Friday for their vacant GM position. The word is that Bernazard is a long shot for the job. Last off-season Bernazard interviewed, unsuccessfully, for the Pirates GM job.

Its difficult to gauge exactly what value Bernazard brings to the Mets. You’ll remember he was the subject of scrutiny in June of quietly engineering the firing of Willie Randolph. Who knows if there’s any truth to that?

Report: Bernazard May Be Next Mets GM

New York Mets VP Tony Bernazard may end up being the next Mets GM if Omar Minaya is fired after this season according to a report by Adam Rubin of the Daily News. It’s an open secret that Bernazard allegedly attempted to engineer the firings of Willie Randolph, Rick Peterson, and Tom Nieto.  He was seen having deep conversations with Jerry Manuel in the dugout while the Mets were preparing to play the Los Angeles Angels, in what turned out to be Randolph’s final game as manager.

Bernazard was a special assistant to the MLBPA prior to joining the Mets. He’s made no secret of his desire to be a Major League GM having interviewed for the Pittsburgh Pirates position when Dave Littlefield was fired.

Bernazard has been the brunt of many scathing indictments of his back-stabbing, politicking in the Mets organization. There are stories of his being the sounding board for the Latin players to complain about Randolph, his locker room interference, and his close relationship with Jeff Wilpon.

The report goes on to say that Bernazard positions himself as a proponent of building the Mets from the farm system, not free agency.  If that’s the case, Minaya better watch his back or he may end up on the unemployment line with Randolph.  It sounds like Bernazard is already beginning to draw distinctions between himself and Minaya.

Video: Olney On Mets Poisonous Atmosphere

ESPN baseball analyst Buster Olney talks about the disorganization within the Mets front office. Specifically, he talks about the well publicized problems with Assistant GM Tony Bernazard and Willie Randolph, the media leaks, and the lack of a chain of command. He also talks about the type of personality that Jerry Manuel brings to the manager’s position for the Mets.

Delgado Doesn’t Want To Be Here

When Carlos Delgado signed his four year contract with the Florida Marlins prior to the 2005 season, he spurned the Mets because he didn’t like Tony Bernazard’s pitch. Even Carlos Beltran talking to Delgado about what a great opportunity they could have with the Mets couldn’t get Delgado to sign here as a free agent.

Prior to the 2006 the Mets traded Mike Jacobs and Yusmeiro Petit for Delgado even though Omar Minaya knew that Delgado didn’t want to be here. Wouldn’t it be nice to have Mike Jacobs back? Hindsight is 20/20. In this case, foresight should’ve been too. That was a bad deal by Minaya. Continue reading “Delgado Doesn’t Want To Be Here”
