Ike Davis Era Begins For Mets

It’s always exciting to have a highly touted prospect make his Major League debut. That’s happening tonight for Ike Davis and the Mets. Unfortunately, it comes at the expense of Tobi Stoner getting optioned back to Triple-A Buffalo. But Mike Jacobs is the one that really paid the price by losing his position.

Much has been written about Davis and we’ll all be following his progress closely in the coming weeks. You can read a good summary about Davis’ stats at Fangraphs. But they threw in a line at the end that’s critical and we’ll get back to that in a minute. Even Beyond the Box Score chipped in with an opinion on the Davis promotion today. Mets’ Mike Jacobs Designated For Assignment

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe Mets made a roster move to bring in Tobi Stoner from Triple-A Buffalo this afternoon. The surprise is that they designated Mike Jacobs for assignment instead of Raul Valdes. But after a 20 inning marathon last night they could use 13 pitchers on the roster for at least a day.

According to MLBTradeRumors, Jacobs does have an option left. So he could be forced to go to Buffalo. The Mets don’t typically force veterans to the minors though. They’ll probably release Jacobs if he requests it.

The big question is where this leaves the Mets at first base. They can certainly go for a while with Fernando Tatis, but not too long. And they’re certainly not going to go with 13 pitchers on the roster for long. Continue reading “Mets’ Mike Jacobs Designated For Assignment”

He was horrible in the first, giving up a grand slam to Josh Willingham. The Mets couldn’t do anything offensively while Livan Hernandez got his revenge on the Mets for releasing him last August.

The Mets lose their second straight home series to start the season. They begin a series in Colorado starting Tuesday night.

Highlights:

  • Santana – 5 IP, 5 ER in the loss
  • Jeff Francoeur – 2 for 3 and hitting .476 on the season; he also had an assist at the plate cutting down Adam Dunn on a beautiful throw
  • The Bullpen – threw 4 more scoreless innings today
  • Mike Jacobs- hit one out in the eighth off Brian Bruney to quiet the boo birds
  • K-Rod- hit Willie Harris in the ninth and didn’t like what Harris had to say about it, the bullpens and benches emptied but it didn’t turn into a fight

Mets Spring Training News: Reyes, Murphy, Jacobs

Today was my second day at Digital Domain Park and there was a ton of news today:

  • Jose Reyes will start the season on the disabled list
  • Daniel Murphy will start the season on the disabled list with a sprained knee
  • Mike Jacobs will make the team and probably start at first base on opening day
  • Chris Carter and Frank Catalonotto are vying for the final roster spot
  • The Mets are setting up the rotation to be Johan Santana, John Maine, Jon Niese, Mike Pelfrey, and Oliver Perez

That’s a lot to digest. While you’re doing that, I’ll tell you about my day today. I started out watching the morning work out and checking out the player’s cars being shipped back to New York. I got some great pictures of the work out that you can see in the slide show below.

Mets Links: Spring Training, David Wright, Mike Jacobs

I haven’t done a “Mets Links” post in a while so I decided to bring that back this weekend. There’s plenty going on in Port St. Lucie this week with only two weeks left before the regular season starts. I’ve got some good links for you so read up below.

  • Remembering Shea – Live posts from PSL including images on #1 celebrity Mets fan Jerry Seinfeld
  • Daily News – Somehow Mike Lupica got on a kick of writing about the Mets this week. His first column is about how the Mets should stick with Jerry Manuel for the long haul. I have no idea where he came up with this one.
  • Mets Today – Mike Jacobs is starting to work out at catcher again. It’s a great move for him to try to stick as the 25th man on the roster as the emergency catcher.
  • Daily News – Lupica’s second Mets column of the week is a fluff piece on David Wright. Just what we needed. Another column about how Wright is the face of the franchise.
  • Crave – A Japanese university created a batting tee that rests the ball on bed of air instead of the tee. Check out the picture, it looks pretty good.

Mets 2010 Spring Training Lacks Competition

There have been two big surprises about the Mets coming off their 70-win disaster of a season last year. First, the Mets and Omar Minaya didn’t do more to improve the team via trades and free agency. Second, there aren’t many position competitions on the field in spring training. We’re basically going to see the exact same team we saw last year, plus Jason Bay.

The first point we’ve argued about all winter. Some of us think the Mets should have done more in the offseason to shake up the team. Other fans have been on board with Minaya’s plan that there weren’t better players on the market than the Mets that are returning from injuries. Whether you’re on board with the plan or not, it’s finished and we’ll see how it plays out. If things don’t look like they’re working out by mid-season, it’s likely that Minaya and Manuel are finished with the Mets too.

The second point is an interesting one. You would think that a team coming off a horrible season would have plenty of competition for playing time. But the Mets appear to be pretty set at most positions and that’s probably a bad sign. It’s very likely that we’re going to see the exact same team that drove into a brick wall last year.

Mets Links: Angel Pagan, Mike Jacobs, Daniel Murphy

Now that we’re only eight days from pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training, there’s starting to be some action in the news over the last few days. Unfortunately, none of the news involves the Mets signing a #2 or #3 starter, a first baseman that can hit, or a legitimate big league catcher. That being said, here’s the latest news:

  • Angel Pagan worked out a deal with the Mets to avoid arbitration. He’ll be back on a one-year/$1.45 million contract. That’s a 152% raise over his 2009 salary. Pagan wanted $1.8 million and the Mets were offering $1.275 million before they agreed on $1.45 million.
  • It looks like Mike Jacobs is coming back to the Mets on a one-year minor league contract. I’m not sure what the Mets expect from Jacobs other than a first baseman that can play a little for the fans of Triple-A Buffalo. Clearly, Ike Davis is the first baseman of the future. But Jacobs offers a little protection against another horrific season by Daniel Murphy.
  • Keith Hernandez is in Florida teaching Daniel Murphy how to play first base. Frankly, I think someone needs to teach Murphy how to hit and do it with power if he wants to stick at first base.
  • The Mets are lowering the center field wall from 16 feet to 8 feet. I thought the Mets brain trust liked having a pitcher’s park? If anything, they should have lowered the wall in left field if they wanted to have an impact on home runs.
  • Mookie Wilson is coming back as a minor league outfield and base running coach. I always like when they find a job for former players. Good job bringing Mook back.
  • Joel Sherman has a plan to save the Mets in 2010. He’s been on the Mets pretty badly over the last few days. You have to wonder what his motivation is. Did someone turn down an interview with him?
