New York Mets (68-71)  at Washington Nationals (60-79) 12:35pm

R.A. Dickey (9-6 2.91) vs Livan Hernandez (9-10 3.81)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Nats play the rubber game of the series this afternoon. Dickey had a terrible game in Chicago in his last start allowing 7 runs in 6 innings. In two games against the Nats this year he has no decisions and a 1.38 ERA in 13 innings. Hernandez has been bombed in his last three starts. Over that span he’s allowed 20 runs in 15 innings. It looks like a late season fade for the old man.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets finally got something to cheer about. Dillon Gee had an incredible first Major League start going 7 strong inning and only allowing 1 run on 2 hits. He didn’t allow a hit until the sixth when Willie Harris took him deep to right. He was cruising only throwing 86 pitches through the 7 innings. It was an extremely impressive start and I’m intrigued to see more.

The Mets jumped ahead early on an Ike Davis 3-run homer in the first inning. Overall, the Mets still only had 6 hits and 2 walks as a team continuing their putrid performance offensively this season.

The Mets even up the series in Washington and play an early rubber game tomorrow at 12:35.

New York Mets (67-70)  at Washington Nationals (59-78) 1:05pm

Mike Pelfrey (13-8 3.72) vs Jordan Zimmermann (0-0 4.50)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Nationals just won a series in Pittsburgh but they’re still in last place and 8 games behind the Mets in the standings. Zimmermann is coming back from Tommy John surgery and has only two starts this year. His last start was a great one though only allowing 1 hit over 6 shutout innings against the Marlins. He also had 9 strikeouts and no walks. Pelfrey was hit hard by the Braves in his last start, a loss in Atlanta. He allowed 4 runs on 9 hits over 5 innings.

Mets 9 – Nationals 5 July 4, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets got a good start from Hisanori Takahashi through 5 innings. Unfortunately, he started the sixth inning and gave up 3 runs without getting an out. The bullpen was shaky, especially Bobby Parnell who gave up two hits in the ninth without getting an out. But Francisco Rodriguez made a nice recovery from yesterday’s meltdown to get the save without allowing a baserunner.

The Mets offense was all over Craig Stammen scoring 8 runs in the first four innings, 7 of them off Stammen. For the game they had 14 hits and 5 walks. Way too many baserunners for the Nationals to have a chance in this game. Angel Pagan had another big game going 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. Ike Davis also hit his 10th homer off Stammen in the third.

The Mets leave Washington at 2-2 for the series and come home to face the Reds tomorrow.

New York Mets (45-36) at Washington Nationals (36-46) 1:35 pm

Hisanori Takahashi (6-3 4.24) vs Craig Stammen (2-2 5.13)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets need this one to even the series at 2-2 before they come home to face the Reds this week. Takahashi was pathetic in his last start against the Marlins giving up 6 runs over 5.2 innings. I have no confidence in him as a starter. The Nats have lost three of the last four games that Stammen started. But his last two starts against the Braves and Reds were excellent. During those starts, he only gave up 3 runs over 14 innings.

New York Mets (45-35) at Washington Nationals (35-46) 4:10 pm

R.A. Dickey (6-1 2.98) vs Stephen Strasburg (2-2 2.27)

TV: FOX   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: This is an odd pitching match-up. I have to admit that I can’t wait to see Strasburg this afternoon. It’s not surprising that Fox picked up this game. The young phenom has been drawing crowds wherever he goes. I bet the TV ratings will be relatively good for a summer afternoon on a holiday weekend. Dickey had his first loss and really bad start against the Marlins on Monday. This is where we’ll start to see if his first six wins were a mirage or not.

Video: Stephen Strasburg Preview July 3, 2010

Here’s some ESPN video with Buck Showalter giving us a preview of Stephen Strasburg. He’s lost his last two starts but his velocity and control are incredible. It’ll be really interesting to see the Mets facing him this afternoon on Fox. I can’t even think of another starting pitcher that I could compare with Strasburg to see how the Mets perform against a fireballing-righty with excellent control and three good pitches.
