Washington Nationals (17-14) at New York Mets (17-14)   7:10 pm

Luis Atilano (2-0 4.67) vs John Maine (1-1 5.97)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Nationals come to town playing much better than we’re used to seeing from them. They took two of three from the Marlins in their last series. Atilano started well for them but got rocked by the Braves in his last start. He gave up 6 ER in 5.1 IP. Maine has put up two quality starts in a row after a terrible start to the season.

Mets 2010 Slow Start – Nats Swat Back!

New York Mets starting pitcher Oliver Perez reacts at Citi Field in New York

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsSo after tearing into the Nationals on Friday night, winning by a score of 8-2, I was starting to feel upbeat. Maybe a few games against the Nats is just what this team needs to get some kind of momentum going before going on a tough, short, road trip.

Instead on Saturday, in comes Old Ollie who still resembles 2009 Ollie. No “New”, no “Improved”, just plain old Oliver Perez. Typical 4 runs in 5.2 innings and he was up there at 101 pitches before being pulled. This has been the same formula that has killed this team for the past few years. Get 5 innings from your starter and kill your bullpen. On the bright side the bullpen has performed well. How long will that last?

But that’s all okay. That’s why Jerry/Omar shuffled the rotation, to have Johan Santana follow Ollie.  Oh, they’ll swear it’s because the pitching match-ups are better but who better to follow Ollie than Santana. In theory, we would forget about Ollie’s poor performance after getting another outstanding outing from Santana.

Well, we watched that theory blow up today. Even Santana has bad days and after a 1st inning grand slam we are left to wonder, can this team ever win a series this year? Can this team beat the Nats? Can this team stay out of last? Continue reading “Mets 2010 Slow Start – Nats Swat Back!”

Nationals 5 – Mets 2 April 11, 2010

Florida Marlins at New York Mets

http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.jsThe game was over in the first inning. The surprise was that the Mets lost this one because of Johan Santana. He was horrible in the first, giving up a grand slam to Josh Willingham. The Mets couldn’t do anything offensively while Livan Hernandez got his revenge on the Mets for releasing him last August.

The Mets lose their second straight home series to start the season. They begin a series in Colorado starting Tuesday night.

Highlights:

  • Santana – 5 IP, 5 ER in the loss
  • Jeff Francoeur – 2 for 3 and hitting .476 on the season; he also had an assist at the plate cutting down Adam Dunn on a beautiful throw
  • The Bullpen – threw 4 more scoreless innings today
  • Mike Jacobs- hit one out in the eighth off Brian Bruney to quiet the boo birds
  • K-Rod- hit Willie Harris in the ninth and didn’t like what Harris had to say about it, the bullpens and benches emptied but it didn’t turn into a fight

Washington Nationals (2-3) at New York Mets (2-3) 1:10 pm

Livan Hernandez (0-0 -.–) vs. Johan Santana (1-0 1.50)

TV: WPIX   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: We’re over the hoopla of Jose Reyes coming back now, so it’s time to win a game and a series today. The Mets cannot lose two straight home series to division rivals to start the season. They need to win this rubber game against the Nats today. It’s a good thing Santana is the guy to do it.

Washington Nationals (1-3) at New York Mets (2-2) 1:10 pm

John Lannan (0-1 12.27) vs. Oliver Perez (0-0 -.–)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: Perez makes his season debut today and I don’t think any of us have a clue about what to expect from him. Lannan, a Long Beach native, got rocked in his first start this season by the Phillies for 5 runs in 3.2 IP.

Washington Nationals (1-2) at New York Mets (1-2) 7:10 pm

Garrett Mock (0-0 -.–) vs. Mike Pelfrey (0-0 -.–)

TV: SNY   Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The word is that Pelfrey wasn’t happy about being demoted to the fourth starter. Here’s his chance to prove that he’s better than that. The Mets need to take this home series from the Nationals after losing a series to the Marlins. After this series, the Mets leave for Colorado and St. Louis, so they need to make some noise against the Nationals at home.
