Preview: Mets at Nationals September 8, 2010

New York Mets (68-71)  at Washington Nationals (60-79) 12:35pm

R.A. Dickey (9-6 2.91) vs Livan Hernandez (9-10 3.81)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Mets and Nats play the rubber game of the series this afternoon. Dickey had a terrible game in Chicago in his last start allowing 7 runs in 6 innings. In two games against the Nats this year he has no decisions and a 1.38 ERA in 13 innings. Hernandez has been bombed in his last three starts. Over that span he’s allowed 20 runs in 15 innings. It looks like a late season fade for the old man.

What are 2011 Mets Biggest Needs?

July 10, 2010 - Flushing, N.Y, United States of America - 10 July, 2010: New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe New York Mets begin to look toward the off-season. There are injuries mounting and disappointments all around. We can only imagine what it must feel like to continue going to work knowing that it means nothing. How can they even pretend to act excited or even mildly interested in the game? Players must be looking at each other wondering who will be with the team next year and who won’t. And so begins the long, slow, excruciatingly painful, end to the season.

Mets fans will now be exposed to some of the young players in the farm system. I do not want to use the term “talent” because I have very little respect for the Mets farm system. We will begin to see players you have never heard of and might never hear of again. There will be a glut of pitching changes throughout the games to allow the youngsters some “in-game experience,” and we will slowly start thinking about football season again.

So what will the Mets do to fix this awful run of disappointing seasons? Well, we can all assume there will be a high priced player or two joining the club. There will be lots of promises of young talent and mending limbs. There will be whispers of big moves and possible trades that will never happen. There will be high hopes and a frenzied fan base waiting for that one miracle season. Continue reading “What are 2011 Mets Biggest Needs?”

Mets 4 – Nationals 1 September 7, 2010

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsThe Mets finally got something to cheer about. Dillon Gee had an incredible first Major League start going 7 strong inning and only allowing 1 run on 2 hits. He didn’t allow a hit until the sixth when Willie Harris took him deep to right. He was cruising only throwing 86 pitches through the 7 innings. It was an extremely impressive start and I’m intrigued to see more.

The Mets jumped ahead early on an Ike Davis 3-run homer in the first inning. Overall, the Mets still only had 6 hits and 2 walks as a team continuing their putrid performance offensively this season.

The Mets even up the series in Washington and play an early rubber game tomorrow at 12:35.

Mets’ Managerial Possibilities for 2011

28 Feb 2002 : Manager Bobby Valentine of the New York mets during the Spring Training game against the St.Louis Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. The Cardinals won 5-2. DIGTAL IMAGE. Mandatory Credit: Eliot Schechter/Getty Images

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsWith the inevitable end of Jerry Manuel’s tenure in blue and orange looming down the homestretch of another dreadful Mets season, the question on every fan’s mind is who will be his successor come 2011. There are the obvious and popular “sexy” choices to take reigns, as well as the low profile names who have had success within the organization. Here’s my take on the possible candidates:

Bobby Valentine
The Mets manager from the end of the 1996 season through 2002, Valentine has proved he is capable of bringing rejuvenation to the franchise, but the question is at how high a price it would cost this time around? Bobby V. is a New York guy with a New York attitude and exercises the underdog persona that the Mets fan base can cling to. On paper, the teams he brought to the playoffs in ’99 and 2000 were very ordinary. However, he got the most out of his rosters and put a scrappy, competitive, and excuse-free product on the field. There has been a lot of speculation about how interested the organization is in bringing Valentine back to Queens. We have reason to believe that Mets people were in his ear when he bowed out of the Marlins managerial candidacy earlier in the season. Continue reading “Mets’ Managerial Possibilities for 2011”

New York Mets (67-70)  at Washington Nationals (59-78) 1:05pm

Mike Pelfrey (13-8 3.72) vs Jordan Zimmermann (0-0 4.50)

TV: SNY  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: The Nationals just won a series in Pittsburgh but they’re still in last place and 8 games behind the Mets in the standings. Zimmermann is coming back from Tommy John surgery and has only two starts this year. His last start was a great one though only allowing 1 hit over 6 shutout innings against the Marlins. He also had 9 strikeouts and no walks. Pelfrey was hit hard by the Braves in his last start, a loss in Atlanta. He allowed 4 runs on 9 hits over 5 innings.

Preview: Mets at Cubs September 5, 2010

New York Mets (66-70)  at Chicago Cubs (59-77) 2:20 pm

Jon Niese (8-7 3.70) vs Ryan Dempster (12-9 3.71)

TV: WPIX  Radio: WFAN

What to watch: For the second straight series the Mets are trying to avoid a sweep by winning the final game. Niese has been awful in his last two starts allowing 15 runs (10 earned) over 10.1 innings. Fortunately, Dempster was equally bad in his last start against the Pirates giving up 7 runs over 3 innings.

Cubs 5 – Mets 3 September 4, 2010

Apr 13, 2010 - Denver, Colorado, USA - MLB Baseball - New York Mets reliever JENRRY MEJIA throws during a 3-11 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

http://view.picapp.com//JavaScripts/OTIjs.jsJenrry Mejia made his first career big league start and it was a major disappointment. He didn’t get bombed but he didn’t look good either. He had Mike Nickeas catching for him in his Major League debut and the two of them looked befuddled. They should have had Henry Blanco catching for Mejia to keep him in check. Mejia threw way too many breaking balls and change-up’s for a 20 year old power pitcher. I was scratching my head wondering what they’re thinking about calling pitches.

The Mets offense was incredibly weak again with only 6 hits and 3 walks especially on a day when the wind was blowing out at Wrigley. The only notable games were from Carlos Beltran (3 for 4, SB) and Ike Davis (2 for 4, HR). Other than that it was a continuation of one of the saddest offenses in baseball.

The Mets drop the second game and lose the series in Chicago. Tomorrow they’ll be trying to avoid the sweep again. What else would you expect?
