Mets 4 – D-Backs 1 April 22, 2011

The Mets won their second game in a row behind a really strong start by Mike Pelfrey. Pelf went 7 innings allowing 1 run and lowering his ERA by 2.5 runs. He looked like the Pelf when he was going strong last season, his sinker was working for strikes and he mixed in a couple of curveballs for strikes too. It’s a shame that he hasn’t been able to be more consistent when you see him pitch like he did tonight.

The Mets couldn’t get much going offensively against Joe Saunders managing only 2 hits off him. They finally got on the board when the D-Backs bullpen took over and Ike Davis hit a 2-run homer. It was initially called a double off the center field wall. But Terry Collins asked for a review and got one. The instant replay clearly showed it was over the line of the wall for Davis’ second homer in two days.

The Mets put up some insurance runs in the eighth as the D-Backs kicked the ball around. And Jason Isringhausen and K-Rod locked down the late innings. This game was just how Collins would have drawn it up. I hope they can keep the good vibes going.

Mets 9 – Astros 1 April 21, 2011

The Mets had a confluence of events that finally led to a home win tonight. Jason Bay came off the disabled list, Terry Collins got thrown out, and David Wright started hitting again. Maybe the most important factor of the night was that Chris Capuano had a great start going 7 innings and only allowing 1 run. He lowered his ERA to 5.95 (still awful) but made some great progress tonight. Hopefully, he can get more consistent.

The Mets had some solid offense with 8 hits and 2 walks including three home runs. But they also took advantage of some bumbling, stumbling play by the sorry Astros. Mike Nickeas had his first career home run. David Wright got off an 0 for 20 schnide with a home run and Ike Davis hit his classic straight center field shot.

The only down side to the game was that Angel Pagan left with an injury after running into Justin Turner on a pop up. It looked like he might have hyperextended his elbow but I’m sure we’ll hear more over the next day or so.

Astros 4 – Mets 3 April 20, 2011

The Mets are finding new and interesting ways to lose games at this point with their seventh straight home loss. R.A. Dickey pitched a really good game until he gave up the go-ahead solo home run to Hunter Pence in the eighth inning. His final line is 8 IP and 4 runs. Jason Isringhausen pitched the ninth so at least K-Rod didn’t get another game finished toward his vesting option for 2012.

The Mets had some great offense going with 12 hits. Jose Reyes had 4 hits and Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy had 3 hits apiece. Murphy had a dramatic home run in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. But the Mets couldn’t take the lead.

Angel Pagan got thrown out trying to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth and would have tied the game at 4-4. Reyes led off the ninth with a hit and Josh Thole popped up a bunt and Reyes was doubled off first base to, effectively, end the game. It was a new way to lose and I’m sure we’ll see many more ways to lose this season.

Astros 6 – Mets 1 April 18, 2011

The Mets dropped the first game of the three game series to the lowly Houston Astros. Jon Niese took the loss to drop to 0-3 but he didn’t pitch that badly giving up 2 runs over 6 innings. He wasn’t especially sharp giving up 7 hits and 5 walks but managed to work out of a lot of trouble.

For all the talk about playing the game the right way, the Mets look like a bumbling crew that doesn’t play the game the right way to me. The bullpen was terrible Ryota Igarashi and Tim Byrdak not getting the job done. And Bobby Parnell had another melt down on the mound balking in a run before he threw a pitch and then giving up an RBI hit.

Scott Hairston blew another ball in left field for an error. It’s just a sad state of affairs. The Mets only had 4 hits as a team and the only run was scored on Carlos Beltran’s solo home run. There wasn’t much to cheer about for the few fans that showed up to Citi Field tonight.

Mets 3 – Braves 2 April 17, 2011

The Mets finally broke the seven game losing streak today and played this game like it was the seventh game of the World Series. It was all hands on deck as Chris Capuano and R.A. Dickey even got into the action. I love the way Terry Collins played it. He wasn’t waiting around for someone to make plays or thinking it was still too early in the season to worry about a losing streak. He knew that he had to shorten the bench and get a win.

The lineup had a minor shuffle with Josh Thole hitting second and Angel Pagan moving down to sixth. Thole came through 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and looked very comfortable letting Jose Reyes do his thing on the bases.

Dillon Gee had an excellent spot start picking up right where he left off at the end of last season. He went 5.2 IP allowing 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks. That’s a really solid start.

I wish the Mets would give him more serious consideration for the big league roster. Capuano hasn’t shown much and Gee has been so consistent at this level. I hope he gets a real shot soon in this rotation.

The Mets come home to an off day tomorrow and the Astros in town this week.

Mets Swept in Doubleheader… Again

The Braves continued the beatdown the Mets are taking this week with their 7th straight loss. D.J. Carrasco made a spot start for Chris Young and gave up three solo homers to lose the game. The Braves had four solo homers total in the game.

The second game was a combination of no offense, the Mets had 2 hits, and bad pitching by Mike Pelfrey again. He gave up 4 runs in 5 innings on 11 hits and 1 walk. It was another bad start for Pelf but he did lower his season ERA to 9.72. Combine poor performances with stupidity like Daniel Murphy getting thrown out stealing third base with no outs and down by 3 runs, it’s a recipe for disaster.

This is the second sweep of a doubleheader in three days and the first time they’ve been swept in back to back doubleheaders since 1982. This is clearly the worst team we’ve seen the Mets put on the field in recent years. Dillon Gee is going to make a spot start tomorrow and he pitched well at the end of last season. But having to rely on a Triple-A call up to stop a 7 game skid is a tough situation.

Mets Swept, Drop Doubleheader to Rockies

In a frightening twist to the early season, the Mets were swept at home by the Rockies including the rare feat of being swept at home in a doubleheader. They’ve now lost five straight games and eight of nine. It’s some of the worst baseball I’ve seen in years and that’s saying something for the Mets.

R.A. Dickey got roughed up for 5 runs in 5.1 innings in the first game, a 6-5 loss. And Chris Capuano was rocked for 7 runs in 5.2 innings in the second game today. None of the Mets pitchers could get Troy Tulowitzki out. He was a one-man wrecking ball hitting homers in all four games.

I can’t even go into greater detail about this series without making myself feel sick. It’s only April and it feels like the season is over, that there’s nothing to look forward to this summer. If I go into detail about the Mets sloppy outfield play letting balls drop in front (or behind) them it will drive me crazy.

Terry Collins had a closed door meeting to chew out the players after their Wed. night loss. He obviously played that card too early. It didn’t do any good as they went out and got destroyed in a doubleheader today. It’s just ugly right now.
